ANALYSIS OF LANDUSE PATTERN OF RIVER BOUNDARY USING TIME-SERIES AERIAL IMAGE

  • It can be important framework data to monitor the change of land-use pattern of river boundary in design and management of river. This study analyzed the change of land-use pattern of Gab- and Yudeung River using time-series aerial images. To do this, we carried out radiation and geometric correction of image, and estimated land-use changes in inland and floodplain. As the analysis of inland, the ratio of residential, commercial, industrial, educational and public area, that is urbanized element, increases, but that of agricultural area shows a decline on the basis of 1990. Also, Minimum Distance Method, which is a kind of supervised classification method, is applied to extract water-body and sand bar layer in floodplain. As the analysis of land-use, the ratio of level-upped riverside land and water-body increases, but that of sand bar decreases. These time-series land use information can be important decision making data to evaluate the urbanization of river boundary, and especially it gives us goodness in river development project such as the composition of ecological habitat.

Occurrence of X-ray Contrast Media (Iopromide) in the Nakdong River Basin (낙동강 수계에서의 X-선 조영제(Iopromide)의 분포 특성)

  • The aims of this study were to investigate and confirm the occurrence and distribution patterns of iodinated X-ray contrast media (iopromide) in Nakdong river basin (mainstream and its tributaries). Iopromide was detected in 16 sampling sites. The concentration levels of iopromide on February 2011 and on October 2011 in surface water samples ranged from not detected (ND) to 1481.1 ng/L and ND to 1168.2 ng/L, respectively. The highest concentration level of iopromide in the mainstream and tributaries in Nakdong river were Goryeong and Jincheon-cheon, respectively. The sewage treatment plants (STPs) along the river affect the iopromide levels in river and the iopromide levels decreased with downstream because of dilution effects.

  • This study is a part of the project to identify water-quality degradation mechanism due to Fe and Mn in the river-bank infiltration system in the Changwon city, Kyungsangnam-Do. Results of hydrogeochemical logging indicated that the matrix of the river bank affects groundwater quality, probably related with the hydraulic conductivities of the different layers of bank deposits. Electric conductivity logging data clearly show various layers of groundwater flows. Further studies are necessary to identify mechanisms of increasing dissolved oxygen contents with depths at some monitoring wells.

  • To quantify the hydraulic connection between river and aquifer, riverbed leakance values are required to be estimated. Silt, clay, and organic materials are often deposited in rivers resulting in the streambed having a lower hydraulic conductivity than the underlying alluvial aquifer The riverbed hydraulic conductivities are measured through vertical and oblique permeameter test. Anisotropic and heterogeneous properties of riverbed hydraulic conductivity were identified. Grain size analysis and flood wave response technique were checked along with the permeameter test for the riverbed hydraulic conductivity.

Properties of Wildbirds Habitat according to Biotope Types at Seom River and Wonju Stream (원주시 섬강, 원주천의 비오톱유형별 야생조류 서식특성 연구)

  • This study is to understand the current situation of Wonju Stream, which flows through Wonju, Kangwon-do, and Seom River, the national river located outside of Wonju, by investigating all river areas using biotope type. Also, this research looked into the relationship between biotope and appearance of wild birds by investigating the location of their appearance. Biotope groups are 'scale', 'shape', and 'landscape'. And, biotope types are 'moisture', 'physical environment', and 'existence of vegetation'. Biotope subtypes are 'river area', 'physical environment', 'vegetation type', and 'usage of land'. Seom River is classified as 21 different sections, and Wonju Stream is classified as 19 different sections. Wild birds are investigated on breeding season, which was January and May of 2008. By marking each bird's location of appearance, it figured out properties of biotope according to the location of bird's appearance. 31 species, 795 birds in spring were founded, and 49 species, 4,348 birds are founded in winter at Seom River area. Also, 34 species, 427 birds in spring, and 33 species, 3,442 birds are founded in winter at Wonju Stream area. In winter, 26 species, 547 birds, and in spring, 12 species, 72 birds at natural river with estuaries in confluence of Seom River area are founded. Also, 34 species, 1412 birds in winter, and 24 species, 341 birds in spring are founded at natural river with estuaries and wetland plants. This means that because agricultural rivers have wide river width, slow flow speed, and many different types of biotope, these rivers can be good habitats for wild birds. The precise investigations and classifications of biotope, which especially are hard for linear rivers, were done to understand the whole and current situation of rivers. Furthermore, the data that shows the locations of wild birds can basically be used for a recovery of biological habitats, a constructing of ecological streams, a river-maintenance, and an enhancement of biodiversity of Wonju. Also, because the types of biotope are altered by rain, a continuous monitoring for maintaining ecosystem of rivers are highly needed.

Diversity of phytoplankton from the Nakdong River, South Korea: Euglenophytes

  • Background: Many investigations on phytoplankton from the Nakdong River carried out. However, since the weirs were constructed, only changes in phytoplankton biomass and dominant species have been restrictively studied in phytoplankton investigations in the Nakdong River. Added to this, any investigation on the phytoplankton flora has not been done in the Nakdong River. The aim of this study is to elucidate the characteristics of phytoplankton communities in the Nakdong River with the weirs built in it. Results: We observed a total of 103 taxa of Euglenophytes belonging to 8 genera from middle-lower part of the Nakdong River. The genus Trachelomonas was the most abundant group making up 40 taxa, followed Lepocinclis (20), Phacus (17), Strombomonas (14), Euglena (5), Colacium (3), Monomorphina (3) and Menoideum (1). Among them, a total of 22 taxa including Colacium (1), Lepocinclis (8), Phacus (4), Strombomonas (4) and Trachelomonas (5) were reported for the first time in Korea, and 86 taxa including those new to Korea were first recorded in the Nakdong River. All the species are illustrated with photomicrographs, and new to Korean species briefly discussed with regard to their taxonomy together with photomicrographs. Conclusions: The present study, a total of 22 taxa including one species of Colacium, 8 taxa of Lepocinclis, 4 taxa of Phacus, 4 taxa of Strombomonas and 5 taxa of Trachelomonas were reported for the first time in Korea, and 86 taxa including those new to Korea were first recorded in the Nakdong River.

Water Quality Analysis in Nakdong River Tributaries for the Determination of Priority Management Areas (관리 우선순위 선정을 위한 낙동강 지류·지천 지점의 수질 오염 특성 분석)

  • Water quality data including flow rates and BOD/COD/T-N/T-P/SS/TOC concentrations in Nakdong river tributaries were analyzed to determine priority management areas using 699 data sets from 195 locations in 2015. It was pointed out that the coefficients of variation, the ratio of the standard deviation to the mean, for the concentrations and loading rates of BOD, T-P, and TOC in each monitoring location were so large that average values of water quality monitoring data might be not appropriate to determine the priority management areas among all 195 monitoring stations in Nakdoing river. Therefore we suggested two evaluation methods using each water quality data independently. In the first method the excess numbers of the BOD, T-P, and TOC concentrations comparing to the water quality standards in the medium-sized management areas in Nakdong river was evaluated for each monitoring station. In the second method the percentile ranks of the loading rates of the BOD, T-P, and TOC were obtained for each monitoring data. The two groups of the priority management areas determined by each method were compared and the water quality characteristics in Nakdoing river were investigated.

Estimation of channel morphology using RGB orthomosaic images from drone - focusing on the Naesung stream - (드론 RGB 정사영상 기반 하도 지형 공간 추정 방법 - 내성천 중심으로 -)

  • In this study, a comparative review was conducted on how to use RGB images to obtain river topographic information, which is one of the most essential data for eco-friendly river management and flood level analysis. In terms of the topographic information of river zone, to obtain the topographic information of flow section is one of the difficult topic, therefore, this study focused on estimating the river topographic information of flow section through RGB images. For this study, the river topography surveying was directly conducted using ADCP and RTK-GPS, and at the same time, and orthomosiac image were created using high-resolution images obtained by drone photography. And then, the existing developed regression equations were applied to the result of channel topography surveying by ADCP and the band values of the RGB images, and the channel bathymetry in the study area was estimated using the regression equation that showed the best predictability. In addition, CCHE2D flow modeling was simulated to perform comparative verification of the topographical informations. The modeling result with the image-based topographical information provided better water depth and current velocity simulation results, when it compared to the directly measured topographical information for which measurement of the sub-section was not performed. It is concluded that river topographic information could be obtained from RGB images, and if additional research was conducted, it could be used as a method of obtaining efficient river topographic information for river management.

A Guide for Environmental Impact Assessment for the Installation of Water-friendly Facilities in River Zones (하천구역 내 친수시설물 설치를 위한 환경영향평가 검토 가이드 연구)

  • Recently, local governments have recognized river zones as leisure spaces and local festival venues, and hence, the pressure for developing these zones has increased significantly. However, given the unique functionalities of river zones and the time and costs associated with maintaining facilities and restoring damaged areas, a development plan must be selected carefully. To preserve river zones and to facilitate nature-friendly space utilization, this study focused on improving environmental impact assessment (EIA), which is an institutional implementation procedure for project plans. This study prepared a draft guide for EIA by providing an overview of the research background and survey outcomes, including the status of laws and regulations on river zones, development plans, and opinions on EIA. The results showed that because strategic EIA of basic river plans is important for district designation of river zones and the scope and direction of space utilization, it is necessary to establish a more meticulous business plan before reviewing and evaluating the mini EIA linked to the future implementation of a plan to derive a reasonable assessment. Additionally, this study provides a draft guide for EIA to evaluate the suitability of water-friendly facility construction plans considering the location characteristics and to reflect the factors that can reduce the environmental impacts during the mini EIA stage. In the future, we expect that the results of this study will serve as a foundation for establishing instructions and guides for the development of nature-friendly and water-friendly facilities in river zones during the establishment of plans.
