Drainage patterns were investigated to interpret the unknown geologic structure and geomorphic history in South Korea. Dendritic and rectangular patterns are most prominent ones developed in the granitic and sedimentary terrain. Drainage density ranges from 0.47 in the Nakdong river basin to 0.31 in the South Han river basin. Fine drainge texture is appeared in the Nakdong basin characterized by sedimentary beds of Mesozoic age, and coarse one are in the South Han river basin where Precambrian metamorphic rocks are dominated. Geological structures interpreted by stream pattern analysis are reasonally good agreement with the result by lineaments analysis and geological mapping.
In order to quantitatively identify historical drought conditions and to evaluate their variability, drought indices commonly used. The calculation method for the drought index based on the principal hydrological factors, such as precipitation and reservoir storage, can estimate the duration and intensity of a drought. In this study the Palmer-type formula for drought index is derived for the Nakdong River basin by analyzing the monthly rainfall and meteorological data at 21 stations. The Palmer Drought Severity Index(PDSI) is used for dry land sectors to evaluate the meteorological anomaly in terms of an index which permits time and space comparisons of drought severity. The Surface Water Supply Index(SWSI) is devised for the use in conjunction with the Palmer index to provide an objective indicator of water supply conditions in Nakdong River basin. The SWSI was designed to quantify surface water supply capability of a watershed which depends on river and reservoir water The Standardized Precipitation Index(SPI) is evaluated for various time periods of 1 to 12 months in Nakdong River basin. For the purpose of comparison between drought indices correlation coefficient was calculated between indices and appropriate SPI time period was selected as 10 months for Nakdong River basin. A comparative study is made to evaluate the relative severity of the significant droughts occurred in Nakdong River basin since 1976. It turned out that $'94{\sim}'97$ drought was the worst drought in it's severity. It is found that drought indices are very useful tools in quantitatively evaluating the severity of a drought over a river basin.

In Korea, the demand for water is increasing greatly due to Korea's raqid economic progress which is similar to Japan's. A correct estimation of the runoff factors is the question that must be settled first to establish the appropritae plans for water use and water resources. of these plans the estimation of catchment evapotranspiration for every river basin is the subject of the most importance. It is impossible theoretically to measure evapotranspiration directly, because it is an at mospheric translatory phenomenon. Many approaches have been devised to estimate evapotranspiration, but each of these methods estimates from information taken from a specified point, and these methods are considered incomplete for estimating catchment evapotranspiration. In this paper, the seasonal evapotranspiration estimating method that was proposed by Linsly and was applied in the Kamigamo exprimental basin (subjected to Kyoto Univ.) by Takase et al, was used for the Geum river which is the main river in Korea. Conclusion of experiment. 1) The average annual Ec in this river basin from 1966 to 1972 was 470mm. That is considered appropriate since the average value for the six other large river basin in korea was 485mm. 2) The Ec/Ep and Ec/Epm ratios were 0.43 and 0.52, respectively (Ec : estimated evapotranspiration by water balance method, Ep : average pan evaporation, Epm : evaporation by Penman method). The seasonal Ec/Ep ratios were : 0.4 in spring, 0.6 in summer, 0.4 in autumn and 0.2 in winter. These are rather small when compared to Japan's or England's. 3) The reason for this was that the precipitational difference in wet and dry seasons were greater, an there was not sufficient soil moisture harmonize with the evapotranspiration capacity in the dry season, and that evapotranspiration was small due to the numerous barren mountains.

Floods have become more widespread and frequent among natural disasters and consisted significant losses of lives and properties worldwide. Flood's impacts are threatening socio-economic and people's lives in the Mekong River Basin every year. The objective of this study is to identify the flood hazard areas and inundation depth in the Mekong River Basin. A rainfall-runoff and flood inundation model is necessary to enhance understanding of characteristic of flooding. Rainfall-Runoff-Inundation (RRI) model, a two-dimensional model capable of simulating rainfall-runoff and flood inundation simultaneously, was applied in this study. HydoSHEDS Topographical data, APPRODITE precipitation, MODIS land use, and river cross section were used as input data for the simulation. The Shuffled Complex Evolution (SCE-UA) global optimization method was integrated with RRI model to calibrate the sensitive parameters. In the present study, we selected flood event in 2000 which was considered as 50-year return period flood in term of discharge volume of 500 km3. The simulated results were compared with observed discharge at the stations along the mainstream and inundation map produced by Dartmouth Flood Observatory and Landsat 7. The results indicated good agreement between observed and simulated discharge with NSE = 0.86 at Stung Treng Station. The model predicted inundation extent with success rate SR = 67.50% and modified success rate MSR = 74.53%. In conclusion, the RRI model was successfully used to simulate rainfall runoff and inundation processes in the large scale Mekong River Basin with a good performance. It is recommended to improve the quality of the input data in order to increase the accuracy of the simulation result.
Calculation of the monthly water balance for Nakdong River basin for the period from 1958 to 1968 is made by determining three components independently: precipitation, runoff and evapotranspiration. The areal precipitation is computed by the Thiessen method using the records of nine meteorological stations in the basin, and the runoff is the flow gauged at Jindong which is located on the most downstream. For the computation of evapotranspiration, the Morton method is adopted because this method is relatively fit best in the calculation of water balance among the Morton, Penman and Thornthwaite methods. The values of Morton evapotransp iration are corrected by the factor of 0.82 in the basin in order to bring the error to zero. The areal evapotranspiration is the arithmetic mean of the Morton estimates at the stations. Mean water balance components in the Nakdong river basin are 1117.0mm, 600.6mm and 516.4m for precipitation, runoff and evapotranspiration respectively. Accordingly, the mean runoff ratio comes out to be 0.54. The smallest values of runoff coefficient are due for Daegu area, while the largest ones are for the southwest of the basin with the higher rainfall and high elevations there. The amount of runoff obtained by both Thornthwaite and Budyko methods for water balance computations indicate 59 and 60 per cent of actual values which are lower than the expected. An attempt is made to find the best reliable rainfall-runoff relation among the four methods proposed by Schreiber, 01'dekop, Budyko and Sellers. The modified equation of Schreiber type for annual runoff coefficient could be obtained with the smallest mean error of 11 per cent.
The results of water analysis for 10 stations in the main Naktong and 11 stations in the tributaries from March to December 1968 are as follows: The water quality of the Naktong River Basin is generally the frist class of water, especially the tributaries, Hwang river, Nam river, Milyang river, Naesongchun, Hoechun, Wichun and Panbyunchun were dissolved in less than 100 mg/l as the amount of the total ion of the main component. In comparison with river discharge, the amount of the total ion of the main component is decreased in June and July, because of the river discharge is increased in those periods. According to the measurement of the conductivity and the hardness, the better water quality is distinguished by the following order: lower part of river (Namji), middle part of river (Waegwan), upper part of river (Yean). The conductivity of Kumho river, Tongchon is higher than the middle part of the main river and Nam river, Chongam is smaller than lower part of the main rivller. The variation of the amount of the total ion of main component in the basin is mainly effected by $HCO_3^-, SO_4^{-2}, Cl^-, Ca^{+2}$. The relationship between $[K^+]\;and\;[C^l-]\;and\;[Na^+]\;and\;[Cl^-]\;are\;[K^+]=0.04\;[Cl^-]+1.7\;mg/l,\;[Na^+]=0.06\;[Cl^-]$ mg/l .The main river was much contaminated by Kumho river and C.O.D. at Gang-chung, Kumho river in June was recorder over the standard about 7 times.
Derivation of stage-discharge relationship and characteristics for Yangsan river is presented in this paper. This research has been conducted as the second one after the first trial in 1997. The determination of discharge at a Yangsan river gauging was best made by measuring the flow velocities with a current meter and rod float. The rating curve obtained through 52 stage-discharge measurements on Yangsan river basin in 1999 is represented by Q=15.3540-140.6076H+182.44372H$^2$, which is discovered to be most excellent among other curves in reliability analysis. The observed stage-discharge data for Yangsan river was tested by HEC-RAS program, and reproduction of discharge by the induced curve was investigated and compared with the computational results. The rating curve of Yangsan river shows characteristics of Yangsan river more accurately compared with those separated in terms of water levels.

The objective of this study is to evaluate and analyze Sumjin River Basin water environment system. It was necessary to improve the water quality. The data were collected from 2010 January to 2012 December including Water Temperature, pH, DO, EC, $BOD_5$, COD, TOC, SS, T-N, T-P. The data were used to study were required to; Correlation Analysis; Principle Component Analysis; Factor Analysis. The results were as followed. According to correlation analysis on $BOD_5$ against COD, TOC it revealed that the each value of correlation coefficient were 0.715 and 0.719; this means the strength of the relationship is strong. The same analysis on T-P against $BOD_5$, COD, TOC, SS has revealed that the range of the correlation coefficient value fell between 0.482 and 0.608 which means strength of the relationship between them remained normal. Through correlation analysis, it has been found that all elements except T-N have high correlation. The results of principal component analysis to target the overall water quality was extracted to three main components. The cumulative contribution rate is 68.990%. In the case of seasonal water quality, Spring and Summer are extracted to each of four main components. The cumulative contribution rate is 81.515% and 73.550% respectively. Fall and Winter are extracted to each of three main components. The cumulative contribution rate is 65.072% and 72.721% respectively. There is no seasonality in the case of factor analysis. The first common factor is $BOD_5$, COD, TOC, SS, T-P, which were classified. Totally speaking, Sumjin River Basin water system gets highly affected by the nutrient salts, organic matter and suspended solid at the same time.
This study aimed at the introduction of desktop method for assessment of environmental flows developed by International Water Management Institute (IWMI) recently and its application to Geum river basin. This scheme simulated the influence on aquatic ecosystem caused by watershed development and in turn the decrease of water quantity keeping the river's own flow regime. It was found to be as very effective method although it had simple structure. Flow duration curves for different environmental classes at Sutong and Gongjoo sites were estimated according to the natural conditional scenario of Geum river basin and the results were relatively compared well with the previous studies. The behaviors of monthly average runoff time series of both sites showed the level of A class. The results of this study would provide the fundamental data to establish the future plans of monitoring or management for aquatic ecosystem of Geum river basin.

The application of the Log-Pearson Type m distribution recommended by Water Resources Council, U. S. A. for flood frequency analysis requires the estimation of the regionalized skew coefficient. In this study, regionalized skew coefficients are estimated using a weighted regression model which relates at-site skews based on logarithms of observed annual flood peak series to both basin characteristics and precipitation data in the Han river and the Nakdong river basin. The model is developed with weighted least squares method in which the weights are determined by separating residual variance into that due to model error and due to sampling error. As the result of analysis, regionalized skews are estimated as - 0.732 and - 0.575 in the Han river and the Nakdong river basin, respectively.
