Tritium Distribution in Some Environmental Samples-Rices, Chinese Cabbages and Pine Needles in Korea (국내 환경시료(쌀, 채소, 솔잎) 중 삼중수소의 분포)

  • To evaluate tritium level in some environmental samples, tissue-free water tritium (TFWT) and tissue-bound tritium (TBT) were analyzed in rices, chinese cabbages and pine needles collected at 12 locations in Korea. The TFWT was recovered by freeze-drying of the samples and the TBT was obtained in the form of water by combustion of the dried samples. Tritium was measured by liquid scintillation counter. The concentrations of TFWT were in the range of $0.96{\sim}3.96 Bq/1,\; 0.83{\sim}3.40 Bq/1\;and\;1.02{\sim}3.01 Bq/1$ in rices, chinese cabbages and pine needles, respectively. The mean specific activity ratios (TBT/TFWT) were 0.94, 1.71 and 1.39 in rices, chinese cabbages and pine needles, respectiviely. This excess TBT in the samples may be attributed to the fact that the residence time of TBT in the plant is longer than that of TFWT. The specific activity ratio depends on the plant species, the exposed time to tritiated atmosphere, atmospheric moisture, temperature and diffusion factor.

Comparison in Anthesis Characterics of Some Male Sterile Rice Cultivars (수도 웅성불임계통의 개화특성 비교)

  • Extrusion degree of stigma, numbers of opened florets at different time during anthesis, angle of opening florets and outcrossed seed set percent were investigated in four male sterile rices having background of Korean cultivars; Suwon 296A, Suwon 304A, Suwon 310A and Suwon 296GMS, and the Chinese cytoplasmic genetic male sterile rice Zhenshan 97A as control in order to get basic informations for hybrid rice breeding. The results obtained were summarized as follows; Extrusion degree of stigma in the four Korean male sterile lines tested was lower than in the Chinese one Zhenshan 97A. The better extrusion of stigma showed the higher outcross rate in male sterile rices. There were almost no relationships between peak of anthesis and outcrossed seed set in the male sterile rices tested. Large anthesis angle with long anthesis duration appeared to be essential for high outcrossed seed set of the male sterile rices. The genetic male sterile line showed the larger anthesis angle than the cytoplasmic and genetic male sterile one in the lines having the same background to the Korean rice cultivar Suwon 296.

Acrylamide monitoring in home-made food products (가정식 음식의 아크릴아마이드 함량분석)

  • Swedish research in 2002 indicated that acrylamide formation was particularly associated with traditional high temperature cooking processes of certain carbohydrate-rich foods. Since the Swedish report, similar findings have been reported by researchers in numerous other countries. In 2003, three hundred and twenty seven domestic food products, selected on the basis of annual sales in Korea, were analyzed. The results were similar to those from other countries. In this study, the monitoring of acrylamide was expanded to include Korean traditional food products. Samples were purchased from local markets, prepared and then analyzed using LC/MS/MS methods. The categorized food products analyzed included cooked rices and porridges, soup products, fried products, boiled down products, seasoned products, roasted products and coffee. The acrylamide concentrations of the samples were $ND\~18ppb$ in cooked rices and porridges, $ND\~28ppb$ in soup products, $ND\~22ppb$ in fried products, $ND\~218ppb$ in boiled down products, <10ppb in seasoned and roasted products, and <10\~11ppb in brewed coffee and coffee drinks.
