  • Differences in community space of weed and rice were investigated among five types of rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivation. The five types employed were three transplanting cultivations such as conventional hand transplanting, machine transplanting with 30-day-old seedling, and machine transplanting with 10-day-old seedling and two direct-seedlings such as flood direct-seeded rice by pregerminated seed and dry direct-seeded rice by dry seed. The greatest competition between rice and weeds as determined by growth rate of rice was found in between 10 and 11 weeks after transplanting (WAT) and/or seeding, irrespective of cultivation types. Competition injury due to weeds was greater in transplanting with 10-day-old seedling than with 30-day-old seedling. The greatest injury in growth of rice was found in direct-seeded cultivation. In transplanting cultivations space occupation by rice in lower than 80 cm height level was low as compared with that by weeds. Plant heights of dominant weeds such as E. crus-galli and E. kuroguwai were shorter by heading date, but taller after the heading date than those of rice. In direct-seeding community space was mainly occupied by the weeds. The pattern of community structure and competition injury caused by weeds showed a similar tendency obtained on the basis of species distribution, number, and dry weight of the occurred weeds.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the major weeds occurred in direct seeded rice and their compition with rice, and to establish the effective weed control method. The important weeds occurring in dry direct seeded rice were Echinochloa crusgalli, Cyperus amuricus, Rorippa islandica, etc. Among them, Echinochloa crusgalli was the most dominant weed species. In view of the Simpson's dominance index, the maximum number of the weeds was observed at 30 days after seeding, showing 0.26, but decreased as the time passed. In other hand, Simpson's dominance index of weed dry weight increased from 0.09 at 15DAS(days after seeding) to 0.28 at 60DAS indicating that particular weed such as barnyardgrass was dominating the fields. The plant height and the tiller number of rice in the dry direct seeded rice were not greatly affected by the time and duration of competition with weeds, but rice yield was greatly influenced by them. The yield reduction was observed when compition between rice and weeds were initiated at 20 to 40 DAS till the harvesting time. The highest weed control efficacy was observed at the treatment of systematic herbicide application such as soil applied Butachlor followed by Mefenacet/Bensulfuron-methyl/Dymron at 30 DAS after seeding, and soil applied Dimepiperate/Bensulfuron-methyl mixture as a preemergence type gave also an excellent control.

  • Differences in competitive characteristics for mineral nutrition were compared with rice and weeds according to rice planting types like the traditional hand transplanting, machine transplanting of young(10days old) and mature(30days old) seedling, flood direct seeding of germinated seeds and dry direct seeding of dry seeds. There was a slight competition for such nutrients as N, P, K, Ca, and Mg by E. crus-galli and E. kuroguwai in transplanting cultivations. However, nutrient uptake by rice in direct-seedings was severely inhibited throughout the whole growth period by the two weeds including annual weeds such as S. Juncoides and C. difformis. The competition for nutrients at different cultivation types was mainly governed by the dominant weeds.

  • Interspecific competition between E. colona and rice was determined over four growth stages in replacement series. No competition between the two species as measured by plant height, leaf area and dry weight occurred by 30 days after seeding (DAS) at all the density combinations studied. At 45 DAS reductions in leaf area and dry weight of E. colons due to the competition occurred at the density combinations where number of competing E. colons plant was less than that of rice. However, there was a great increase in leaf area and dry weight of E. colons at the density combination of one E. colons competing with four rice plants at 60 DAS. As the number of E. colons plants increased, the leaf area and dry weight of E. colona decreased resulting from intraspecific competition between E. colons plants. Although rice absorbed more nitrogen than E. colons up to 30 DAS, the reverse was observed from 45 DAS. A relatively small amount of phosphorous was absorbed by both rice and E. colons, but the amount of phosphorous taken up by E. colons was greater than that taken up by rice. E. colons absorbed extremely high amount of potassium when compared to rice.

  • This experiment was conducted to find out the critical competitive period and competitive ability of rice against red rice. Plant height and number of tillers of rice decreased as red rice competed with rice during active tillering stage. The maximum tillering stage of rice competed with red rice became about 10days earlier than those non-competed. Significant yield reduction of rice was observed in the plots competed for 20 days after transplating or longer. Such a yield reduction can be mainly attributed to the decrease in number of panicles per hill and grain number per panicle. In a replacement diagram for rice and red rice, their competition is turned out being antagonized. The relative yield total was considered lower than 1. Grain number, culm and panicle length of rice was not affected significantly by inter-specific competition. Rice grain yield reduction was highly correlated with the number of panicles of red rice. Three hundred panicles/$m^2$ of the red rice were necessary to reduce rice grain yield by 50% of the check plot.

  • The ability of three Echinochloa colona (L.) Link ecotypes to compete with rice (Oryza sativa L.) was evaluated. For all the ecotypes, E. colona was shorter and produced less leaf area and dry matter than rice at 15 days after seeding (DAS), whereas the reverse was observed from 30 to 60 DAS. Neither E. colona nor rice tillered during the first 15 DAS, but E. colona had greater accumulative tiller length than rice from 15 DAS. Rice absorbed more nitrogen than E. colona at 15 DAS. E. colona absorbed greater amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium than did rice between 30 and 60 DAS and increase in its density decreased the nutrients uptake of rice. Differences in the competitive ability of the ecotypes were related to the growth characteristics of the ecotypes and the period of competition between the two species. At the early growth stages the Pangasinan ecotype, which increased plant size rapidly and had a shorter life cycle, was more competitive against rice than the Leyte and South Cotabato ecotypes, which had a longer vegetative growth period. However, the reverse was observed at the later growth stages of the ecotypes.

  • The experiment was carried out to clarify the root competition between rice and paddy weed. Sagittaria pygmaea, under field condition. Rice variety Joongwonbyeo(Tongil type) and Sangpoongbyeo(Japonica type) were transplanted and Sagittaria tuber was planted artificially at planting density of untreated control, 4, 8 and 16 tubers/$m^2$, respectively. The number of roots, root fresh weight and root activity of rice and Sagittaria were measured at 30, 45, 60 and 75 days after transplanting. The results obtained were as follows. The root growth of Joongwonbyeo was decreased greatly according to the increase of Sagittaria tuber density compared with Sangpoongbyeo. On the other hand, the root growth of Sagittaria competed with Joongwonbyeo was depressed at 45 days after transplanting, and the one competed with Sangpoongbyeo was depressed at 60 days after transplanting. It was concluded that the competition ability of Sangpoongbyeo against Sagittaria was greater than Joongwonbyeo mainly due to the tall height and large tillers. And also the root growth of Sagittaria competed with Joongwonbyeo was more depressed than that of Sangpoongbyeo.

  • Sagittaria pygmaea Miquel is widely infested and is the most dominant perennial weed in paddy field in Korea. This study was carried out in order to clarify the factors influencing tuber production and the competition ecology. The tuberization capacity in the paddy field transplanted with the small seedlings of rice was higher than in the paddy field transplanted with the vigor seedlings of rice. The stage which rice plants were most damaged by S. pygmaea plants was the period from 31 to 37 days after transplanting. According to the increasing of Eleocharis acicularis Roem. in the condition of rice cultivation, the number of S. pygmaea plants was remarkably reduced. Small size tubers planted within deep soil produced less tubers than large size tubers did. The number of plants and tubers were remarkably increased under the high levels of fertilization. Phosphorus was essential as well as nitrogen for tuberization. And the tuberization capapcity was different with the organic matter content in soil and with the soil moisture.

  • All types of weed community became dominant by Monochoria vaginalis (Burm.) Presl. as the nitrogen level increased. The importance value (IV.) of M vaginalis rapidly increased with increasing nitrogen level whereas the LV. of other weed species decreased. At the 10 $\times$ 10cm plant spacing, M. vaginalis was almost totally suppressed at all nitrogen levels. At the 20 $\times$ 20cm plant spacing, the degree of suppression declined with increasing nitrogen level. At the 30 $\times$ 30cm plant spacing, there was no suppression of M vaginalis at the highest nitrogen level. The yield obtained at the 10 $\times$ 10cm plant spacing when M. vaginalis was present was not significantly different from that obtained from the weed free plot for all rice cultivars while it was significantly reduced by M vaginalis competition at the 20 $\times$ 20cm and 30 $\times$ 30cm plant spacings. The difference in yield caused by M vaginalis competition was primarily due to a reduction in the number of panicles at all nitrogen levels. There was a high negative correlation between grain yield and weed weight at heading. The yield reduction due to weed competition varied depending upon the nitrogen level.

  • The experiment was studied to know the competitive ability of rice against weeds as affected by rice maturity and plant spacing. For both cultivars, Tongil (12 days later) and Yeongnamjosaeng, the least amount of weed was obtained from the 10 ${\times}$ 10cm plant spacing while no difference between 40 ${\times}$ (10 ${\times}$ 10cm) and 30 ${\times}$ 15cm plant spacings was observed. When weed was nor pulled out by hand, significant yield loss was resulted in 30 ${\times}$ 15cm and 40 ${\times}$ (10 ${\times}$ 10cm) plant spacings while no difference between weeding regime was observed at the 10 ${\times}$ 10cm plant spacing in both cultivars. Rice grain yield was unaffected by plant spacing for hand weeded plot in both rice cultivars. For noweeding plot, however, the highest grain yield was obtained from 10 ${\times}$10cm plant spacing and also this yield was not significantly different from the yield of hand weeded plot while significant yield loss was recognized at the 30 ${\times}$ 15cm and 40 ${\times}$ (10 ${\times}$ 10cm) plant spacings in noweeding plot. There was also a good relationship between weed weight and grain yield for both cultivars (Tongil; Y = 5.68 - 0.0127 X, r = -0.814$^*$; Yeongnamjosaengv Y = 5.04 - 0.0314 X, r =-0.9704$^{**}$). Based on these relationship, weed weight of 188.2g/sq.m for Yeongnamjosaeng and 223.6g/sq.m for Tongil was needed to reduce rice yield by 50%, respectively. This result implied that Tongil compete more efficiently against weed than Yeongnamjosaeng and hence, could be concluded that late maturing cultivar was more competitive against weed compared to early maturing cultivar.
