This study was carried out to evaluate the productivity of rice cultivation in extremely late season in Korea and to confirm the effects of pot-raising seedling culture in this case by assessing the growth and yield performance of rice cultivars that are well adapted to late culture. Suitable cultivars for extremely late culture should not have premature heading habit when transplanted around late July and also secure appropriate growth duration before heading. Geumobyeo 1 and Manjongbyeo showed small decrease in the emerged leaves in transplanting in late July or early August and heading occurred at the same time relatively without premature heading. At transplanting from late July to early August in extremely late rice cultivation, ripening was relatively good until transplanting on August 5. At transplanting on July 30, accumulated temperature from heading to the first frost was $853^{\circ}C$ and ripening was good enough. However, heading was delayed by low temperature at transplanting on August 10 and ripening was very poor due to low accumulated temperature of below $800^{\circ}C$, causing drastic decrease of rice yield. The rice yield increased in transplanting with pot seedling, especially the effects of pot seedling was higher in Geumobyeo 1, but panicle number was not enough to secure rice yield owing to short growth duration. In order to cultivate rice in extremely late season, we should select adaptive rice cultivars that have suitable growth duration and excellent ripening in low temperature. Here, pot-seedling did a great role to secure early growth and bigger growth amounts.

1. This survey was conducted to make a basis for the cause of severe epidemic and disease control to the losses due to bacterial leaf blight of rice in Chun-Nam rice paddy field areas in the first part of October in 1965. The severe epidemic areas were included Taijun-Myun, Tamyang-Eup, riverside in Youngsanpo and seaside in the suburbs of Mokpo. 2. A drought in the period of rice transplanting and flooding due to a heavy rain in July were resulted reasonable weather conditions that the disease occurred more early and severe epidemic. 3. In Tamyang area, frist outbreak of the disease was on the middle part of July in the paddy flooded after heavy rainfall of the first fart of July. It is recognized to farmers that the disease is known as a now serious one. 4. The more date of transplanting is followed, the more serious damage is happened and especially, in the paddy field flooded, too. 5. Flooded areas showed more serious epidemic. 6. Varietal difference to the disease was surely noticed, and Kumnampoong and Chunbonwuk were susceptible, whereas Norin 6 was resistant. 7. Damage was occurred more in plant paddy area than tile slopping paddy area. 8. Fallow paddy field was more serious than the field using double cropping a year. 9. Moist and semimoist paddy field were more serious damage, while light damage in dry paddy field. 10. Near part of flood gate for drainage of submerge paddy was more serious damage than inside part of the field. 11. Soft type is often seen in the mode of the disease occurrences. 12. The most farmers insisted that dropping water is caused to promote disease dissemination when disease occurred.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of application of composted cattle manure (CCM) on the productivity of the whole crop rice (WCR) and Italian ryegrass (IRG) on both Sancheong and Asan area from 2005 to 2008. Application levels of CCM such as chemical fertilizer (CF), CCM 150% and CCM 200% were tested in paddy field. Amount of CCM was adjusted equal to total nitrogen value relative to its value of CF. Mean dry matter yield (DMY) of WCR and IRG increased in order; CCM 200% > CF > CCM 150% in Asan and there was no significant difference between CCM 200% and CF. In Sancheong, DMYs of WCR and IRG significantly decreased (p<0.05) in order CF > CCM 200% > CCM 150%. The plant length and number of tiller of WCR were not different among treatments, however the percentage of ripeness of WCR was higher (p<0.05) in CF compared to CCM 150% and CCM 200%. Also, there were no differences in NDF and ADF contents, however CP content was higher (p<0.05) in CF treatment compared to CCM 150% and CCM 200%. Based on the results of this experiment, IRG-WCR double cropping system with application of CCM may be effective in producing the forage resources of 18~20 tons every year with eco-friendly way.

'Taehan' (Avena sativa L.), a winter oat for forage use, was developed by the breeding team at the Department of Rice and Winter Cereal Crops, NICS, RDA in 2012. It was derived from a cross between 'Malgwiri' and 'CI8015'. Subsequent generations were handled in bulk and pedigree selection programs at Suwon and Yeoncheon, respectively. After 2 years of preliminary and advanced yield tests, 'SO00020B-YB-15-5-9-4-3', designated as 'Gwiri78', were subsequently evaluated for earliness and forage yield during 3 years in four regions such as Yesan, Iksan-1 (Paddy), Iksan-2 (upland), and Jeju from 2010 to 2012, and finally named 'Taehan'. Over 3 years, the heading date of 'Taehan' was about 6 days earlier than that of the check cultivar 'Samhan' (May 8 and May 14, respectively), and their average forage dry matter yield harvested at the milk-ripe stage was 14.5 tone $ha^{-1}$, compared with 14.1 tone $ha^{-1}$ for the check cultivar. The cultivar 'Taehan' was lower than that of the check cultivar 'Samhan' in terms of protein content (6.3% and 7.7%, respectively) and total digestible nutrients (60.7%, and 62.1%, respectively). The TDN yield was more than that of the check cultivar (9.1 tone $ha^{-1}$ and 8.0 tone $ha^{-1}$, respectively). Fall cropping of 'Taehan' is recommended only in areas where average daily minimum mean temperatures in January are > $-6^{\circ}C$, and it should not be cultivated in mountainous areas, where frost damage is likely to occur.
Nationwide survey of weed population in paddy rice field was conducted from 1760 fields all around Republic of Korea in 1981. The weed species observed include 2 species of grasses, 7 species of sedges, and 18 species of broadleaf weeds, and the dominant weed species were Monochoria vaginalis, Sagitraria trifolia, Potamogeton distinstus, Sagittaria pygmea and Cyperus serotinus. More and many weeds were growing in single cropped field than double cropped field. In single cropped fields, weed population was reduced when autumn plowing was conducted. In double cropped fields, more weeds were growing in barley or wheat grown fields than vegetable gown fields. Among the five paddy soil types, more weeds were growing in saline soils and poorly drained soils than others. The proportion of annual and perennial weeds in national average was 44% and 56%, and perennials became more dominant in central part of the peninsula. Autumn plowing and double cropping appeared to reduce the perennial weed population, however, the increased perennial weed population, presumably due to continuous use of herbicides which controls mostly annuals, seemed to an urgent problem to be solved.
In this study, we evaluated the salinity tolerance of five forage rice cultivars (Mogwoo, Mogyang, Miwoo, Jowoo, and Yeongwoo) with respect to germination, seedling growth, productivity, and feed values in a reclaimed paddy field in Muan, Korea. We found that the cultivars Mogwoo, Miwoo, Jowoo, and Yeongwoo showed normal germination and seedling growth, even at saline concentrations of between 0.1% and 0.5%, whereas in contrast, there were significant reductions in the germination and seedling growth of Mokyang with an increase in salt concentration. Among the five cultivars assessed, the seedling growth of Mogwoo and Yeongwoo was relatively higher at different salt concentrations in hydroponic and sand cultivation. Furthermore, cultivation of the five cultivars in the reclaimed paddy field with an initial salt concentration of 0.3% revealed that Yeongwoo was relatively superior in terms of yield and feed value. In conclusion, the germination and early growth of Yeongwoo were relatively good at high salt concentrations, and the yield and forage value of this cultivar in a reclaimed paddy field were also relatively superior to those of the other assessed varieties.

The objective of this study was to know prospect and present state of new variety breeding of Forage and Grassland in South Korea. The industry of forage in Korea is going up to expend through utilization of good quality forage, Italian ryegrass, forage corn and oat rather than rice straw. Especially, since 2007, Italian ryegrass(IRG) had been very important major winter forage crop in South Korea and developed 13 varieties including very early maturity variety (three varieties), early maturity variety (three varieties), medium maturity variety (one variety) and late maturity variety (six varieties). But the disadvantage of Italian ryegrass was weak winter hardness and drought but has good advantage of forage nutritive value, high-yielding and high sugar content, and like livestock as like hanwoo, dairy cattle, goat so on. The Ko-variety (Korea developed variety) of Italian ryegrass has high cold-tolerant and adaptability more than any other country developed variety, and expend to cultivation area from southern area (below Daejeon) to middle-northern area (upper Han river). Although the cultivation area of Italian ryegrass of South Korea was 21,700 ha in 2007, right now, that of Italian ryegrass is about 123,600ha due to expend cultivation area and know famer to good forage crop and have a various maturity varieties (very early, early, medium, late) according to local situation (before-crop harvesting stage or double cropping system). The seed market of Italian ryegrass in South Korea becoming extended to around 100 million Korean won and seed export get nearer to foreign country. We are going to develop of new variety for stress tolerant and high yield and quality forage variety, good adaptability to the Korean environmental conditions including reclaimed area, make self-sufficiency system for forage seed (Italian ryegrass), export our seed to foreign countries.

Soil physical and chemical characteristics, soil potential denitrification rates (PDR), community composition and nirK-, nirS- and nosZ-encoding denitrifiers were studied by using MiSeq sequencing, quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), and terminal restriction fragment polymorphism (T-RFLP) technologies base on short-term (5-year) tillage field experiment. The experiment included four tillage treatments: conventional tillage with crop residue incorporation (CT), rotary tillage with crop residue incorporation (RT), no-tillage with crop residue retention (NT), and rotary tillage with crop residue removed as control (RTO). The results indicated that soil organic carbon, total nitrogen and NH4+-N contents were increased with CT, RT and NT treatments. Compared with RTO treatment, the copies number of nirK, nirS and nosZ in paddy soil with CT, RT and NT treatments were significantly increased. The principal coordinate analysis indicated that tillage management and crop residue returning management were the most and the second important factors for the change of denitrifying bacteria community, respectively. Meanwhile, this study indicated that activity and community composition of denitrifiers with CT, RT and NT treatments were increased, compared with RTO treatment. This result showed that nirK, nirS and nosZ-type denitrifiers communities in crop residue applied soil had higher species diversity compared with crop residue removed soil, and denitrifying bacteria community composition were dominated by Gammaproteobacteria, Deltaproteobacteria, and Betaproteobacteria. Therefore, it is a beneficial practice to increase soil PDR level, abundance and community composition of nitrogen-functional soil microorganism by combined application of tillage with crop residue management.
A male sterile facilitated recurrent selection population was developed by the barley breeding team of Yeongnam Crop Experiment Station. To breed this population, three composite cross populations and a composite population of breeding lines in our country were used as the materials. This population was developed in order to breed early maturing, wet-soil tolerant and high yielding barley varieties, adapted for double cropping with rice in southern part of Korea. The population was named by RSPYB#l which means Recurrent Selection Population No.1. of Yeongnam Barley.

Assessment of plant genetic resources is applicable when breeding improved plant caltivars. In Korea, early maturing wheat germplasm is anticipated for wheat-rice double-cropping. In this study, we assessed five agronomical traits including days of heading after sowing(HD), days of maturity after sowing(MD), culm length(CL), ear length(EL), and thousand grain weight(TW) of 500 wheat germplasms collected form 10 different countries (Mexico, the United States, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, India, Japan, China, Turkey, Pakistan and Portugal), and grown in Korea. Besides, the correlation between the agronomical traits was analyzed using XLSTAT softerware version 2019 (Addinsoft, NY, USA). The result showed wide-ranging maturity period. Among the entire population, 2 accessions (K256306/JPN/breeding line and K256328/JPN/breeding line) that matured early were identified. Furthermore, HD showed strong correlation with MD (r=0.684) and CL (r=0.610), and weak correlation with the rest two agronomical traits (EL and TW). Overall, the results of our study provides wide spectrum of prospects, and could be applicable to breed new wheat varieties with early maturity.
