  • This study was performed to investigate the characteristics of workability and strength of the concrete containing admixtures such as silica fume, fly ash, blast furnace slag, and rice husk ash. For this purpose, the workability and the strength of the concrete containing each admixture were tested and analyzed according to the unit weight of binder and the replacement ratio of each admixture.

  • "Deuraechan" is a new japonica rice variety developed and registered by the rice breeding team of Department of Rice and Winter Cereal Crop, NICS, RDA in 2008. This variety was derived from a three way cross Iksan438, YR19105Acp222 and Milyang165. This variety has about 122 days of growth duration from transplanting to harvesting in Honam and Youngnam plain of Korea. It is about 76 cm in culm length and tolerance to lodging. In reaction to biotic stresses, it shows moderately resistance to blast, resistance to bacterial blight pathogen races from $K_1$ to $K_3$, and Rice stripe virus, but susceptible to other major diseases and insect pests. The milled rice of "Deuraechan" has high Quality, midium short grain. The milled rice yield of this variety is about 6.52 MT/ha in local adaptability test for three years. "Deuraechan" would be adaptable to Middle plain, Honam plain and Youngnam plain area of Korea.

  • 'Pyeongwon' is a new japonica rice cultivar which is developed from a cross between Jinbu19 and Samjiyeon4 from North Korea by the rice breeding team of National Institute of Crop Science, RDA. Pyeongwon has about 107 days duration from seeding to heading in mid-northen plain, alpine, north-eastern coastal and southern alpine areas. It has about 67 cm culm length and tolerance to lodging. Pyeongwon has 13 tillers per hill and 82 spikelets per panicle. It showed tolerance to heading delay and spikelet sterility due to cold treatment similar to Odaebyeo. It also showed slow leaf senescence and moderate tolerance to viviparous germination during the ripening stage. Pyeongwon has resistance to blast disease but susceptible to stripe virus and brown planthopper. Milled rice of Pyeongwon has translucent kernels, relatively clear non-glutinous endosperm and medium short grain. It is characterized as a low gelatinization temperature and slightly lower amylose content (17.1%) variety compared to Odaebyeo (19.5%) and has good palatability of cooked rice. The milled rice yield performance of this cultivar was about 5.28 MT/ha by ordinary culture in local adaptability test for three years. This cultivar may be highly adaptable to the mid-northen plain, alpine, north-eastern coastal and southern alpine areas of Korea.

  • Pyricularia oryzae (P. oryzae), the cause of rice blast, is one of the most important fungal pathogens of rice. Seventy strains of marine fungi were isolated from marine algae, and it was measured antifungal activity against P. oryzae. Metabolites of marine fungus A-248 which isolated from marine algae showed strong antifungal activity against P. oryzae. The antifungal substance from the metabolites of marine fungus A-248 was extracted with ethylacetate, and then purified by preparative TLC and reverse-phase HPLC. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value was $0.18\mu g/mL$ for the antifungal activity of the substance purified from A-248 metabolites. The purified substance was similar to antifungal activity of rhizoxin, which is a commercial antifungal agent.

  • This experiment was undertaken the purpose of investigating the difference of the content of free amino acids in the diseased and healthy leaves of the resistance and susceptible rice varieties, to blast by means of paper chromatography. The results obtained are summarized as follows. (1) In the healthy and diseased leaves, the former was founded nine to tell sorts of free amino acids and later was observed eleven. In the both of leaves, alanine and valine were contained in larger amount, and aspartic acid, glycine and arginine were found relatively less in general. (2) In the diseased leaves, the amino acids were increased in quantity, especially glutamine and aspartic acid were remarkable, and cystine were found only in the diseased ones. (3) It seems to that the health leaves in all varieties were observed the amino acid contents, in notably increase and decrease, but in the diseased ones were not changed in amount. Tatacho, susceptible variety was more contained the amount of glutamine and aspartic acid than Zenith, resistance one.
