  • It was reported that the semi-solid forming process has many advantages over the conventional forming process, such as a long die life, good mechanical properties and energy savings. It is very important, however, to control liquid segregation to gain mechanical property improvement of materials. During forming process, Rheology material has complex characteristics, thixotropic behavior. Also, difference of velocity between solid and liquid in the semi-solid state material makes a liquid segregation and specific stress variation. Therefore, it is difficult for a numerical simulation of the rheology Process to be Performed. General Plastic or fluid dynamic analysis is not suitable for the behavior of rheology material. The behavior and stress of solid particle in the rheology material during forging process is affected by viscosity, temperature and solid fraction. In this study, compression experiments of aluminum alloy were performed under each other tool shape. In addition, the dynamics behavior compare with Okano equation to Power law model which is viscosity equation.

  • This study used two types of rheology modifiers including an alkali-swellable emulsion (ASE) and an surface-adhesion emulsion (SAE) to elucidate their effects on high shear viscosity and dynamic penetration behavior among the flow properties of high solids coating. Since rheology under high shear and dynamic penetration behavior significantly affect the quality of coated paper in case of high solids coating, it is very important to examine the variations in rheology of high solids coating color by rheology modifier. It was found that the high solids coating color prepared with the SAE type showed superior dynamic penetration behavior and high shear viscosity than that with the ASE type rheology modifier.

  • Rheology forming technology has been accepted as a new method for fabricating near net shaped products with lightweight aluminum alloys. The rheology forming process consists of reheating process of billet, billet handling, filling into the die cavity and solidification of rheology formed part. The rheology forming experiments are performed with two different die temperatures ($T_d$ = $200^{\circ}C$, $300^{\circ}C$) and orifice gate type. The filling behavior and various defects of Al-Si materials with wear resistance (A357, A390 and ALTHIX 86S) fabricated in rheology forming process are evaluated in terms of alloying elements and surface non-uniformity. Finally, the methods to obtain the rheology formed products with high quality are described by solutions for avoiding the surface and internal defects.

Rheological behavior and wall slip of dilute and semidilute CPyCl/NaSal surfactant solutions

  • In this research, experimental studies were performed to examine the rheological behavior of equimolar solutions of cetylpyridinium chloride (CPyCl) and sodium salicylate (NaSal) solutions with concentration. The surfactant solutions were prepared by dissolving 2 mM/2 mM - 80 mM/80 mM of surfactant/counterion in double-distilled water. It has been observed that the zero shear viscosity shows abrupt changes at two critical values of C^*$ and C^{**}$. These changes are caused by the switching of relaxation mechanism with concentration of CPyCl/NaSal solutions at those concentrations. The wall slip velocities of dilute and semidilute CPyCl/NaSal solutions show a dramatic increase with shear rate where the shear viscosity exhibits shear thickening behavior for dilute solutions and shear thinning behavior for semi-dilute solutions, respectively. Considering that the dramatic increase in wall slip velocity should be related to the formation of shear-induced structure (SIS) in the surfactant solution, the shear thickening behavior of semi-dilute solutions is caused by elastic instability unlike the case of dilute solutions.

  • The semi-solid processing is now becoming of great interest for the production of various parts by pressure die casting. Also, the rheolory casting has been substituted for thixo casting, because the rheology casting can control the solid particles to globular and non-dendritic solid phase. In the rheology casting process, the important thing is to control the solid particles behavior in semi-solid materials. So in this paper, to control solid particles behavior in semi-solid materials, we experimented about the die filling during the semi-solid die casting in 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0,6 solid fraction. The die filling in semi-solid die casting were simulated by MAGMAsoft/thixo module. By the die filling tests and computer simulation, the effect of solid particles behavior in rheology flow had been investigated.

It is important to predict the deformation behavior for optimization of the forging process with semi-solid materials and to control liquid segregation for mechanical properties of materials. But rheology material has thixotropic, pseudo-plastic and shear-thinning characteristics. So, it is difficult for a numerical simulation of the rheology process to be performed because complicated processes such as the filling to include the state of the free surface and solidification in the phase transformation must be considered. General plastic or fluid dynamic analysis is not suitable for the analysis of the rheology material behavior. Recently, molecular dynamics is used for the behavior analysis of the rheology material and turned out to be suitable among several methods. In this study, molecular dynamics simulation was performed for the control of liquid segregation, forming velocity, and viscosity in compression experiment as a part of study on the analysis of rheology forming process.

Droplet deformability and emulsion rheology: steady and dynamic behavior

  • The static and dynamic rheological behavior of concentrated sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) stabilized, deformability controllable polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) emulsions is reported and comparisons made with silica (hard sphere) suspensions. Steady-mode measurements indicate 'hard' (viscoelastic) droplets behave as hard spheres, while 'soft' (viscous) droplets induce structural flexibility of the emulsion against shear. Dynamic-mode measurements reveal that viscoelasticity of droplets provides the great magnitude of elasticity for the 'hard' emulsion, while formation of planar films between droplets is the origin of the elasticity of 'soft' emulsions. Combination of steady and dynamic rheological behavior has enabled depiction of droplet structure evolution in relation to the shear stress applied, especially by taking advantage of the normal force that reflects the transient deformation of droplets.
