We have developed a model for estimating the parameters of viscous materials from indirect tensile tests for asphalt. This is a simple Burger nonlinear rheological two-cell model or standard model. At the same time, we begin to develop a more versatile and complex multi-cell model. The simple model is validated using experimental load-displacement results from laboratory tests: The recorded displacements are used as input values and the measured force data are simulated with the model. The optimal model parameters are estimated using the Levenberg-Marquardt method and a very good agreement between the experimental results and the model calculations is shown. However, not all parts of the model are active in the loading phase of the experiment, so we extended the validation of the model to the simulation of the relaxation behaviour. In this stage, the other model parameters are activated and the simulation results are consistent with the literature. At this stage, we have estimated the parameters only for the two-cell uniaxial model, but further work will include results for the multi-cell model.
The rheological properties of cement paste system mixed with mineral admixtures (MAs) used to increase the strength and improve durability and fluidity of concrete were investigated. And cement paste systems were designed as one-, two- and three-ingredients blended paste systems. The rheological properties of paste systems were assessed by Rotovisco RT 20 rheometer (Hakke inc.) having a cylindrical serrated spindle. The rheological properties of one-ingredient paste systems were improved with increasing the dosage of superplasticizer. For two-ingredients paste systems, as increasing the replacement ratio of blast furnace slag (BFS) and fly ash (FA), the yield stress and plastic viscosity were decreased compared with non-replacement. In the ordinary portland cement (OPC)-silica fume (SF) paste systems, in accordance with an increase in the replacement ratio of SF, the yield stress and plastic viscosity were increased steeply. For three-ingredients paste systems, both OPC-BFS-SF and OPC-FA-SF paste systems, the rheological properties were improved compared with the only replacement of SF. In the case of both two-and three-ingredients paste systems, the rheological properties using BFS were improved more than FA.
Grease thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication (TEHL) problems of line contacts are analyzed numerically. The effects of temperature and rheological paraineters on grease TEHL are investigated using the Herschel-Bulkley model as a theological model of greases. The pressure distribution, the shape of grease film, mean film temperature and surface temperature of solid wall in line contacts are obtained. It is found that thermal effects on the minimum film thickness become remarkable at high rolling speeds. The effect of yield stress of Herschel-Bulkley model on minimum film thickness is negligible, while the theological index and viscosity parameter have significant effects on minimum film thickness.

This paper is concerned with applicability of intelligent PID controller which is proposed by Fliss and Join recently. First, we analyze the stability regions of intelligent PID control systems when parameter α is varying, and propose a new method to determine the suitable range of α by using the roots locus. Second, the simulation study of magneto-rheological (MR) damper to the structural vibrations due to earthquakes is presented to verify the effectiveness of the intelligent PID control method.
To control the stochastic vibration of a vibration-sensitive instrument supported on a beam, the beam is designed as a sandwich structure with magneto-rheological visco-elastomer (MRVE) core. The MRVE has dynamic properties such as stiffness and damping adjustable by applied magnetic fields. To achieve better vibration control effectiveness, the optimal bounded parametric control for the MRVE sandwich beam with supported mass under stochastic and deterministic support motion excitations is proposed, and the stochastic and shock vibration suppression capability of the optimally controlled beam with multi-mode coupling is studied. The dynamic behavior of MRVE core is described by the visco-elastic Kelvin-Voigt model with a controllable parameter dependent on applied magnetic fields, and the parameter is considered as an active bounded control. The partial differential equations for horizontal and vertical coupling motions of the sandwich beam are obtained and converted into the multi-mode coupling vibration equations with the bounded nonlinear parametric control according to the Galerkin method. The vibration equations and corresponding performance index construct the optimal bounded parametric control problem. Then the dynamical programming equation for the control problem is derived based on the dynamical programming principle. The optimal bounded parametric control law is obtained by solving the programming equation with the bounded control constraint. The controlled vibration responses of the MRVE sandwich beam under stochastic and shock excitations are obtained by substituting the optimal bounded control into the vibration equations and solving them. The further remarkable vibration suppression capability of the optimal bounded control compared with the passive control and the influence of the control parameters on the stochastic vibration suppression effectiveness are illustrated with numerical results. The proposed optimal bounded parametric control strategy is applicable to smart visco-elastic composite structures under deterministic and stochastic excitations for improving vibration control effectiveness.
Magneto-rheological fluid (MRF) rotatory dampers are normally used for controlling the constant rotation of machines and engines. In this research, such a device is proposed to act as variable stiffness device to alleviate the rotational oscillation existing in the many engineering applications, such as motor. Under such thought, the main purpose of this work is to characterize the nonlinear torque-angular displacement/angular velocity responses of an MRF based variable stiffness device in oscillatory motion. A rotational hysteresis model, consisting of a rotatory spring, a rotatory viscous damping element and an error function-based hysteresis element, is proposed, which is capable of describing the unique dynamical characteristics of this smart device. To estimate the optimal model parameters, a modified whale optimization algorithm (MWOA) is employed on the captured experimental data of torque, angular displacement and angular velocity under various excitation conditions. In MWOA, a nonlinear algorithm parameter updating mechanism is adopted to replace the traditional linear one, enhancing the global search ability initially and the local search ability at the later stage of the algorithm evolution. Additionally, the immune operation is introduced in the whale individual selection, improving the identification accuracy of solution. Finally, the dynamic testing results are used to validate the performance of the proposed model and the effectiveness of the proposed optimization algorithm.
This paper addresses a sliding mode control of vibration in a flexible structure using ER(electro-rheological) dampers. A clamped-clamped flexible structure system supported by two short columns is considered. Three ER dampers to be operated in shear mode are designed on the basis of Bingham model of the arabic gum-based ER fluid, and attached to the flexible beam structure. After deriving the governing equation of motion and associated boundary conditions, a sliding mode controller is formulated to effectively suppress the vibration of the beam structure caused by sinusoidal and random excitations. In the formulation of the controller, parameter variations such as natural frequency deviation are treated to take into account the robustness of control system. The effectiveness of the proposed control system is confirmed by both simulation and experimental results.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the rheological and thermal properties of yam starch. Yam starch had a hydrodynamic volume with the intrinsic viscosity,[$\eta$], of 0.29dl/g deionized water. The values of the intrinsic viscosity of yam starch, determined to pH 2-11, varied between 0.07 to 0.18 dl/g. The highest intrinsic viscosity was obtained at pH 7. At salt concentrations 0-0.2 M NaCl, the intrinsic viscosity of yam starch was decreased up to 0.05 M NaCl concentration then increased to 0.07 M NaCl concentration and remained constant to reach 0.2 M NaCl concentration. The overlap parameter, calculated with the intrinsic vicosity data, was 3.45 g/dl in deionized water. The thermal properties of yam starch were investigated by Differential Scanning Calorimetry. Three endotherms were observed both pH solution and salt concentation. In the presence of pH 9, the onset temperature of gelatinization peak was the lowest temperature of 50.$32^{\circ}C$ and the enthalpy ($\Delta$H) was increased in this solution. The effect of salt on the thermal properties of yam starch was determined at salt concetration of 0-0.2 M NaCl. The enthalpy significantly decreased to salt concentration 0.07 M NaCl and the lowest onset temperature of this concentration was 52.$90^{\circ}C$.
The stress environment of deep rock masses is complex. Under the action of earthquakes or blasting, the strength and stability of anchored rock masses in fracture zones or faults are affected. To explore the variation in anchored rock masses under creep-fatigue loading, shear creep comparative testing of anchored marble specimens with or without fatigue loading is performed. Considering the damage variable of rock under fatigue loading, a rheological model is established to characterize the whole shear creep process of anchored rock masses under creep-fatigue loading. The results show that (1) the overall deformation of marble under creep-fatigue loading is larger than that under only shear creep loading, and the average deformation is increased by 18.3%. (2) By comparing the creep curves with and without fatigue loading, the two curves basically coincide when the first level stress is applied, and the two curves are stable with the increase in stress level. The results show that the strain difference among the specimens increases gradually in the steady-state stage and reaches the maximum at the fourth level. (3) The shear creep is described by considering the creep mechanical properties of anchored rock masses under fatigue loading. The accuracy of this creep-fatigue model is verified by laboratory tests, and the applicability of the model is illustrated by the fitting parameter R2. The proposed model provides a theoretical basis for the study of anchored rock masses under low-frequency earthquakes or blasting and new methods for the stability and reinforcement of rock masses.
The rheological studies on dilute and concentrate solutions of naked and covered barley starches were carried out with various viscosimeters. The rheology of dilute solutions (0.05-0.3%) were characterized by intrinsic viscosity and related parameter according to Huggins equation. Also, the rheology of the solutions of higher concentrations (1-5%) were characterized by time dependent characteristics and pseudoplastic behaviors. The values of consistency index according to the power equation were exponen tially dependent upon concentration and temperature. The results showed that the rheological properties could differ greatly due to difference in varieties. The naked barley starch exhibited higher intrinsic viscosity, more thixotropic behavior and more dependence of consistency index on concentration and temperature than the covered barley starch.
