  • Rhapontica uniflora, Platycodon grandiflorum and Solanum tuberosum extracts affected the recovery of radiation-induced damage at all tested doses $(15.6,\;31.3,\;62.5\;and\;125\;{\mu}g/ml)$. The survival rate of pretreatment with extracts was increased by 2 times more than its compared with untreated cells. All tested extracts protected the growh-delay of normal cells and haematological parameters from their radiation-induced fall. In tested extracts, Solanum tuberosum was significantly superior to Platycodon grandiflorum and Rhapontica uniflora in radio-protection activity.

  • This study was carried out to obtain the basic information that can be used to index rhubarbs in six regions of China and Korea. The anthraquinone and stilbene contest in various rhubarb produced in th different area were quantitatively analysed by HPLC. The average of sennoside A content of the Chinghai rhubarb was higher than that of the other palmata rhubarbs(high-quality rhubarbs) produced in China. As a result, the order of the sennoside A content was 1) Chinghai rhubarb, 2) Tsuchan rhubarb, 3)Kansu rhubarb 4) Neimenggu rhubarb. On the other hand, the total stilbenes content of each of the cultivated Korean rhubarb(Rheum undulatum) were higher than that of the Chinese rhapontica rhubarb(low-quality rhubarbs).

  • Eleven out of 118 herbal medicines which are frequently used in Korean traditional prescriptions for inflammatory diseases exhibited more than 50% of inhibition on $TNF-{\alpha}$ production in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells by their total ethanol extracts with 0.1 mg/ml as a final concentration. The active 11 total extracts were prepared from Angelica koreana, Coptis japonica, Cynanchum paniculatum, Magnolia frgesii, Magnolia officinalis, Panax ginseng, Patrinia scabiosaefolia, Pterocarpus santalius, Rhapontica uniflora, Saussurea lappa. Of them, Coptis japonica, Magnolia fargesii and Saussurea lappa also significantly inhibited $TNF-{\alpha}$ production in vivo. These total extracts were sequentially fractionated with n-hexane, methylene chloride, ethyl acetate, n-butanol and water. Among the solvent-fractionated extracts with 0.05 mg/ml as a final concentration, inhibitory effects of Angelica koreana, Magnolia fargesii, Magnolia officinalis, Pterocarpus santalinus, Rhapontica uniflora and Saussurea lappa markedly showed in one or two solvent fractions suggesting that the principles may be concentrated by subfractionation as the main compounds.

  • The present study was performed to investigate antioxidant activities of Korean edible wild extracts. In water and methanol extracts of edible wild plants, total polyphenol content of water and methanol extracts ranged 4.6~183.8 and 8.2~270.1 mg/g, respectively. Radical scavenging activity against DPPH and ABTS radicals was observed to be high in Lysimachia barystachys, Aceriphyllum rossii, Securinega suffruticosa, Sedum kamtschaticum, and Pedicularis resupinata. Pedicularis resupinata, Securinega suffruticosa, Patrinia villosa, and Solidago virga-aurea var. asiatica showed effective SOD-like activity. There was significant correlation between polyphenol content and DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities, and SOD-like activity. Plant extracts such as Pedicularis resupinata, Securinega suffruticosa, Rhapontica uniflora, Lysimachia barystachys, and Aceriphyllum rossii had higher polyphenol content, radical scavenging, and SOD-like activity. These results indicate that Korean edible wild plants may be useful as potential antioxidant sources for improving human antioxidant defense system.

  • Rhubarb (Rhei Rhizoma) has been used for the various clinical purposes such as purgative, stomach protective and pain relief for a long time. However, rhubarb in current market has a problem of quality control under which many of rhubarb fail to meet the standard specified in Korean Pharmacopoeia. This study was carried out to validate the method for the evaluation of the quality of five rhubarbs and Rumex species; Rheum palmatum, R. officinale, R. tanguticum, R. franzenbachii, R. undulatum, and Rumex species. The content of sennoside A with five anthraquinones (aloe-emodin, rhein, emodin, chrysophanol and physcion) in five rhubarbs and one Rumex has been performed by using HPLC quantitation analysis. In results, only four samples in Palmata sect. were qualified with sennoside A and those samples were R. officinale and R. tanguticum. Samples of R. palmatum did not meet the standard contents of sennoside A. The contents of anthraquinones in Palmata sect. were two times larger than those in Rhapontica sect. Moreover the content variations of anthraquinones were smaller than those of sennoside A. Thus, anthraquinones can be the key characterizing molecules to control quality of rhubarb.

  • The resource plants at the reclaimed seaside in Songdo was listed 170 taxa: 39 families, 113 genera, 144 species, 23 varieties, 2 forms and 1 hybrid. In those, woody plants were 18 taxa (10.6%) and herbaceous plants were 152 taxa (89.4%). Among 170 taxa listed was confirmed 107 taxa of edible plants (62.9%), 99 taxa of medicinal plants (58.2%), 55 taxa of ornamental plants (32.4%) and 77 taxa of the others (45.3%). Salt plants (Including dune plants) consists of 12 taxa (Scirpus planiculmis, Sllaeda japonica, Artemisia scoparia, Scorzonera albicaulis, etc.). Specific plants by floral region were total 5 taxa; Vicia bungei in class IV, Koelreuteria paniculata in class III, Grewia biloba var. parviflora, Lysimachia fortunei, Rhapontica uniflora in class I. The naturalized plants in this site were 11 families, 27 genera, 37 species, 1 varieties, 38 taxa and naturalization rate was 22.4% of all 170 taxa resource plants.
