  • In this study, reinforced concrete slabs with steps were experimentally studied to analyze their structural performance and to suggest reinforcing details in the step. Because the stepped slabs may behave very poorly in terms of bending strength, stiffness, deflection, cracking, etc., the study is aimed to suggest proper reinforcing details such that the same bending strength is obtained as that without steps. The bending strengths of 12 test specimens with a variety of different reinforcing detail types or other parameters were compared with each other. The specimen without any additional reinforcement in the step had a very low bending strength and significant damage, and the specimens with diagonal reinforcements in the step showed substantial early cracks, experienced hinging of the step, and had a substantial loss of the bending strength. In contrast, the specimens with a combination of U-bars, reversed U-bars, L-bars, and reversed L-bars performed very well and almost reached to 100% of the slab bending strength. The U-bars and reversed U-bars were effective in controling the diagonal cracks, while the L-bars and reversed L-bars were effective in preventing from yielding of slab reinforcement near the step.

  • This paper presents the root cause failure analysis of the circulating water pump in the 560 MW thermal power plant. A fractured austenitic stainless-steel shaft operated for 24 years was examined. Fracture morphology was investigated by micro and macro-fractographic analysis. The metallurgical analyses including chemical analysis, metallography and hardness testing were performed. The analysis reveals that the pump shaft was fractured due to the reverse bending load with combination of rotating bending load. Corrective actions for plant operator was recommended based on the analysis.

  • Ratcheting behavior of $90^{\circ}$ elbow piping subject to internal pressure 20 MPa and reversed bending 20 kN was investigated using experimental method. The maximum ratcheting strain was found in the circumferential direction of intrados. Ratcheting strain at flanks was also very large. Moreover, the effect of temperature on ratcheting strain of $90^{\circ}$ elbow piping was studied through finite element analysis, and the results were compared with room condition ($25^{\circ}$). The results revealed that ratcheting strain of $90^{\circ}$ elbow piping increased with increasing temperature. Ratcheting boundary of $90^{\circ}$ elbow piping was determined by Chaboche model combined with C-TDF method. The results revealed that there was no relationship between the dimensionless form of ratcheting boundary and temperature.

  • This paper suggests a non-contact sensor for measuring bending vibration of a non-metallic cylinder in two orthogonal directions simultaneously. Recent research shows that a solenoid can pick up bending vibrations of a nonmetallic cylinder based on the reversed Lorentz force mechanism if an electrical conductive patch is attached to the cylinder. In this work, pairs of specially designed patches are used to make two independent paths for the current induced by bending vibrations, which enables the measurement of bending vibrations along two orthogonal directions simultaneously. The working performance of the developed sensor was verified by using two accelerometers.

  • This investigation suggests a new non-contact type sensor that can measure flexural vibrations of a non-ferromagnetic pipe. The sensor works on the reversed Lorentz force mechanism; however, anti-symmetric bias magnetic field suggested in this work should be applied to measure bending vibration of a non-ferromagnetic pipe. The importance of the suggested magnetic field is verified by a series of experiments. The sensor is applied to the bending vibration measurement and modal testing of an aluminum pipe and shows satisfactory working performance compared to others.

  • Ratcheting deformation of pressurized Z2CND18.12N stainless steel $90^{\circ}$ elbow pipe with local wall thinning subjected to constant internal pressure and reversed bending was studied using finite element analysis. Chen-Jiao-Kim (CJK) kinematic hardening model, which was used to simulate ratcheting behavior of pressurized $90^{\circ}$ elbow pipe with local wall thinning at extrados, flanks and intrados, was implemented into finite element software ANSYS. The local wall thinning was located at extrados, flanks and intrados of $90^{\circ}$ elbow pipe, whose geometry was rectangular cross-section. The effect of depth, axial length and circumferential angle of local wall thinning at extrados, flanks and intrados on the ratcheting behaviors of $90^{\circ}$ elbow pipe were studied in this paper. Three-dimensional elastic-plastic analysis with Chen-Jiao-Kim (CJK) kinematic hardening model was carried out to evaluate structural ratcheting behaviors. The results indicated that ratcheting strain was generated mainly along the hoop direction, while axial ratcheting strain was relatively small.

  • On the bending process, metal-strap plays an important role in dispersing the stress generated in wood. Therefore, the metal-strap has more influence on the property of bentwood materials. The effect of the metal-strap thickness for bentwood was examined. The effect of metal-strap on the bending properties of Korean red pine(Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc.)was investigated in this research. The metal-strap thickness is divided into 4 kinds such as 1.0, 0.8, 0.6, 0.4 mm. The specimens were selected by grain such as annual ring angles, flat grain and half-edge grain specimens. As a result of this study, the bending ability of 1.0, 0.8 mm, thickness of half-edge grain specimens was better than flat grain specimens but the result of 0.6, 0.4 mm were reversed. The bending ability of half-edge grain was better than flat grain and the grade was higher. When the processed specimens were dried, the radius of curvature(ROC) was decreased became drying-stress was not perfectly dispersed. An optimum drying-condition would deminish this phenomenon.

  • Most PM components are exposed to cyclic loading over long periods of time, yet, the fatigue performance is often at best characterized by a fully reversed bending strength. The effects of density, deviating loading modes, external notches or mean stresses must usually be estimated. The amount of available data is nowadays sufficient to come to fact-based estimates.

  • Most of the fatigue test were achieved in fully reversed condition that mean stress is zero. But, generally, mean stress can not be zero. This research was achieved the bending fatigue test that changes mean stress to spring steel and was studied relation with the mean stress and the fatigue life. The method to search effect about mean stress was extended S-N graph in two cases. One method was extended S-N graph using modified Miner's rule with considering damage. Another was extended using tendency of S-N graph. The exponential value(${\alpha}$) of mean stress-alternating stress equation is converged between the Goodman's and the Gerber's value even if fatigue life increases.
