  • Since first discovered in chick skeletal muscles, stretch-activated channels (SACs) have been proposed as a probable mechano-transducer of the mechanical stimulus at the cellular level. Channel properties have been studied in both the single-channel and the whole-cell level. There is growing evidence to indicate that major stretch-induced changes in electrical activity are mediated by activation of these channels. We aimed to investigate the mechanism of stretch-induced automaticity by exploiting a recent mathematical model of rat atrial myocytes which had been established to reproduce cellular activities such as the action potential, $Ca^{2+}$ transients, and contractile force. The incorporation of SACs into the mathematical model, based on experimental results, successfully reproduced the repetitive firing of spontaneous action potentials by stretch. The induced automaticity was composed of two phases. The early phase was driven by increased background conductance of voltage-gated $Na^+$ channel, whereas the later phase was driven by the reverse-mode operation of $Na^+/Ca^{2+}$ exchange current secondary to the accumulation of $Na^+$ and $Ca^{2+}$ through SACs. These results of simulation successfully demonstrate how the SACs can induce automaticity in a single atrial myocyte which may act as a focus to initiate and maintain atrial fibrillation in concert with other arrhythmogenic changes in the heart.

  • Pressure retarded osmosis (PRO) processes can be implemented on a number of water types, using different technologies and achieving various power outcomes. In this study, Sewage facility effluent was used for feed solution of PRO and synthetic NaCl water for draw solution. This study was conducted to investigate effect of water quality of pretreatment on power density and flux decline in PRO process. The results show that organic and particulate foulants have to be removed for more stable operation. Flourescence technique with EEM enables to investigate the chemical properties of aquatic organic matter by extracting spectral information. Humic/fulvic matters and soluble microbial by-products were analyzed as the most affecting factors on the PRO performance. As a result of analyzing the whole system based on the energy consumption of the unit process, specific energy consumption(SEC) of the applicable technology for PRO pre-treatment should be about $0.2kWh/m^3$ or less.

  • In this study, surface temperature which was extracted from Landsat TM band 6 was compared and analyzed with the AWS(Automatic Weather System) observation data for studying urban heat environment properties with possibility of remote sensing data application. In order to verification of the distribution properties of urban surface temperature, correlation analysis between surface temperature and NDVI, the distribution properties of urban surface temperature by land use/cover patterns were carried out by GIS spatial analysis techniques. The results presented that the spatial distribution of urban surface temperature was very different depending on various land use/cover patterns of surrounding areas. Also there was the reverse linear relationship between surface temperature and NDVI. These results will be worked as one of the major factors for environmentally sustainable urban planning considering the characteristics of weather environments in the near future.

  • Natural circulation systems (NCSs) are extensively applied in nuclear power plants because of their simplicity and inherent safety features. For some passive natural circulation systems in floating nuclear power plants (FNPPs), the ocean is commonly used as the heat sink. Condensation induced water hammer (CIWH) events may appear as the steam directly contacts the subcooled seawater, which seriously threatens the safe operation and integrity of the NCSs. Nevertheless, the research on the formation mechanisms of CIWH is insufficient, especially in NCSs. In this paper, the characteristics of flow rate and fluid temperature are emphatically analyzed. Then the formation types of CIWH are identified by visualization method. The experimental results reveal that due to the different size and formation periods of steam slugs, the flow rate presents continuous and irregular oscillation. The fluid in the horizontal hot pipe section near the water tank is always subcooled due to the reverse flow phenomenon. Moreover, the transition from stratified flow to slug flow can cause CIWH and enhance flow instability. Three types of formation mechanisms of CIWH, including the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, the interaction of solitary wave and interface wave, and the pressure wave induced by CIWH, are obtained by identifying 67 CIWH events.

  • Purpose: To investigate the clinical value of serum miR-221-3p and miR-122-5p expression levels in the diagnosis and prognosis of gastric cancer. Materials and Methods: Serum samples from 141 gastric cancer cases (gastric cancer group), 110 gastric polyps (gastric polyp group), and 75 healthy people (healthy control) were used to detect miR-221-3p and miR-122-5p expression using real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Results: Serum miR-221-3p expression was significantly higher in the gastric cancer group than in the gastric polyp group, and it was significantly lower than that before operation. The miR-221-3p expression was significantly higher in the death group than in the survival group. The proliferation and migration ability significantly increased and the apoptosis rate significantly decreased by miR-221-3p transfection in gastric cancer cells. In contrast, the function of miR-122-5p in gastric cancer cells was opposite of miR-221-3p. Serum miR-221-3p expression was negatively correlated with that of miR-122-5p in gastric cancer. Serum miR-221-3p and miR-122-5p expressions were significantly correlated with the degree of differentiation, tumor, node, metastasis stage, lymph node metastasis, and invasion depth. miR-221-3p and miR-122-5p expression levels were independent prognostic factors for postoperative gastric cancer. In the diagnosis and predicting prognosis of gastric cancer, receiver operating characteristic analysis revealed that the area under curve of combined detection of serum miR-221-3p and miR-122-5p expression had a greater diagnostic effect than either single maker. Conclusions: The miR-221-3p and miR-122-5p are involved in the development of gastric cancer, and they have important clinical values in gastric cancer diagnosis and prognosis.

  • In this paper, the non-isolation, high-efficiency and high-voltage-output DC-DC converter using the self-driven synchronous switch is proposed. The proposed converter achieves high-voltage-output by applying a tapped inductor to the conventional boost DC-DC converter structure, and it reduces the voltage stress of main switch applying the lossless capacitor-diode (LCD) snubber to the switch. And the proposed converter applies the synchronous switch instead of the diode to the output part, and thus it resolves the reverse recovery problem and achieves high-efficiency. The synchronous switch of proposed converter uses the self-driven method and has a simple structure. In this paper, the operation principle of proposed converter is explained, and then, a design example of the converter prototype is presented. And the characteristics of the proposed converter are shown through experimental results of the prototype made with the designed circuit parameters.

  • The power circuit design of an on-board S-band transmitter for KSLV-II with derating(operation of a component at less than its maximum rated specification to enhance reliability) is investigated. The power circuit of the transmitter consists of linear voltage regulators, DC/DC converters for regulating the DC supply, and diodes for reverse voltage protection. After analyzing the load current of the components, derating requirements are explored. Furthermore, power dissipation and junction temperature rise are considered with respect to the load current. The analysis is compared to the results from an engineering model of the transmitter. The temperature of the components is derated by >$40^{\circ}C$ in an environment where the ambient temperature is $+60^{\circ}C$, which is the acceptance test specification of high temperature.

  • Fiber lasers have made remarkable progress over the past three decades, and they now serve far-reaching applications and have even become indispensable in many technology sectors. As there is an insatiable appetite for improved performance, whether relating to enhanced spatio-temporal stability, spectral and noise characteristics, or ever-higher power and brightness, thermal management in these systems becomes increasingly critical. Active convective cooling, such as through flowing water, while highly effective, has its own set of drawbacks and limitations. To overcome them, other synergistic approaches are being adopted that mitigate the sources of heating at their roots, including the quantum defect, concentration quenching, and impurity absorption. Here, these optical methods for thermal management are briefly reviewed and discussed. Their main philosophy is to carefully select both the lasing and pumping wavelengths to moderate, and sometimes reverse, the amount of heat that is generated inside the laser gain medium. First, the sources of heating in fiber lasers are discussed and placed in the context of modern fiber fabrication methods. Next, common methods to measure the temperature of active fibers during laser operation are outlined. Approaches to reduce the quantum defect, including tandem-pumped and short-wavelength lasers, are then reviewed. Finally, newer approaches that annihilate phonons and actually cool the fiber laser below ambient, including radiation-balanced and excitation-balanced fiber lasers, are examined. These solutions, and others yet undetermined, especially the latter, may prove to be a driving force behind a next generation of ultra-high-power and/or ultra-stable laser systems.

  • The two-sided assembly line balancing problem is a kind of NP-hard problem. This problem primarily can be solved metaheuristic method. This paper suggests parallel clustering algorithm that each left and right-sided workstation assigned by operations with Ti = c* ± α < c, c* = ${\lceil}$W/m*${\rceil}$ such that M* = ${\lceil}$W/c${\rceil}$ for precedence diagram of two-sided assembly line with total complete time W and cycle time c. This clustering performs forward direction from left to right or reverse direction from right to left. For the 4 experimental data with 17 cycle times, the proposed algorithm can be obtain the minimum number of workstations m* and can be reduce the cycle time to Tmax < c then metaheuristic methods. Also, proposed clustering algorithm maximizes the line efficiency and minimizes the variance between workers operation times.
