  • The proposed algorithm deals with a detection problem of target echo for narrow-band continuous-wave active sonar in the underwater environment in this paper. In the active sonar systems, ping signal emitted for target detection produces a signal that consists of multiple reflections by many scatterers around, which is called reverberation. The proposed algorithm aims to detect the low-Doppler target echo in the reverberant environment. The proposed algorithm estimates the bearing, frequency, and temporal bases based on beamspace-domain multichannel nonnegative matrix factorization. In particular, the bases are divided into two basis groups - the reverberation group and the echo group, then the basis groups are estimated independently. In order to evaluate the proposed algorithm, a simulation with synthesized reverberation was performed. The results show that the proposed algorithm has enhanced performance than the conventional algorithms.

  • Reverberation Time (RT) with noise levels can affect speech recognition ability in a listening environment. The degree of influence may depend on reverberation times and modes of binaural hearing. In this study, Korean monosyllabic Word Recognition Scores (WRS) were investigated in 10 young normal hearing subjects under binaural conditions. The RT of 3.4 s and signal to noise ratio of 0 dB were used at 55 dB HL for diotic (noise with the same phase) and dichotic (noise with the fixed phase difference, π) conditions. The improvement in WRS was noted in dichotic hearing (p < 0.05) while the similar trend was not observed in diotic hearing. This data may be useful in analyzing psychoacoustic effects of RTs under noisy conditions.

  • In this paper we achieve experimental data evaluation using SSB(Single-side band) modulation in the ocean. Present research in underwater communication is applying digital modulation, OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Modulation) and MIMO(Multiple Input Multiple Output) system. However, Commercial modems using analog modulation techniques in oceans. So, we achieved experimental for modem appliance development of correct high quality in South Korea sea characteristics. This experimets achievd useing SSB analog modulation in Jin-hae shore of shallow water condition. We analyzed Doppler effects, reverberation and transmission characteristics for real channel effect analysis. As a result, reverberation and ships self-noise are disturbed factors for underwater communications.

  • Recently, a method of measuring impulse response is widely used for a room acoustic evaluation instead of measuring reverberation time by white noise excitation. Comparing with the traditional reverberation time measurement, this method has many advantages such as good repeatability and the ability to extract various room acoustic parameters at one measurement. In this study, the author developed a measuring system that can extract mono-aural room acoustic parameters from an impulse response measured with MLS (Maximum Length Sequence) signal excitation. These room acoustic parameters include reverberation times(EDT, RT), speech intelligibilities(C50, C80, D, U50, U80, AI) and sound strength(G). This paper introduces the configuration of the developed measuring system, test results and discussions for the measurements at several rooms.

  • This paper proposes a speech enhancement algorithm to improve the speech intelligibility by suppressing both reverberation and background noise. The algorithm adopts a non-causal single-channel minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) filter to exploit an additional information that is included in the noisy-reverberant signals in subsequent frames. The noisy-reverberant signals are decomposed into the parts of the desired signal and the interference that is not correlated to the desired signal. Then, the filter equation is derived based on the MVDR criterion to minimize the residual interference without bringing speech distortion. The estimation of the correlation parameter, which plays an important role to determine the overall performance of the system, is mathematically derived based on the general statistical reverberation model. Furthermore, the practical implementation methods to estimate sub-parameters required to estimate the correlation parameter are developed. The efficiency of the proposed enhancement algorithm is verified by performance evaluation. From the results, the proposed algorithm achieves significant performance improvement in all studied conditions and shows the superiority especially for the severely noisy and strongly reverberant environment.

  • In active sonar system using CW signal, when the noise included reverberation has not the white characteristics, the CFAR detector estimates high threshold. Because of this reason it cannot detect targets and not resolve the closely spaced multiple targets. In order to solve these problems, we propose an adaptive reverberation rejection filter The proposed filter is composed of an adaptive filter and a fixed filter with its coefficients. To study the performance of the proposed adaptive reverberation rejection filter, various experiments have been performed under In moving active sonar environments. As a results, the proposed method has the improved performance than the previous methods.

  • Korean traditional houses have been evolved and developed in many years, adopting the natural environment to control exterior conditions. These control method are various Passive system of using natural materials, considering micro climate, building lay out, and these system are much natural and ecological to make the comfortable indoor climate than active systems of the present houses. This study aims to analyzed the acoustical characteristics of Korean traditional houses varied with lay out and floor plan to reflect the way of control for environmental condition. The reverberation time and level difference between rooms of the main living room and other main floored room, master room and kitchen are measured in each houses. As a result, the reverberation time of Korean traditional rooms are below 0.6 second, and the sound insulation performance of Korean traditional door are mostly very low grade with D-15. The level difference between rooms are low grade not to meet minimum class except between main living room and master room away from main living building. These above results show that our traditional house are much more emphasized seeking visual privacy of rooms than aural privacy.

  • This paper evaluates $C_{50}$ in elementary school classrooms and considers utilization of $C_{50}$ as an assessment indicator of acoustic performance. $C_{50}$ is early-to-late arriving sound ratio, recent study reported that $C_{50}$ is more appropriate as a measure of clarity and speech intelligibility than D50 because it is linearly related to subjective responses. The average of $C_{50}$ in elementary school classrooms appeared to be about +2 dB ~ +3 dB throughout 500 Hz ~ 4 kHz. However, absolute evaluation is difficult because there is no suitable reference or standard yet. As deviation of $C_{50}$ according to location is larger than reverberation time, it is expected that $C_{50}$ will be more sensitive when someone assesses acoustic performance of classrooms. Correlation between $C_{50}$ and reverberation time is very high. From logarithmic regression equation, we can estimate appropriate range of $C_{50}$ in elementary school classrooms indirectly, using standard of reverberation time in ANSI.

  • In order to establish the environmental condition of sounds in the classroom, we measured the impulse response in cases of using and not-using PA(Public-Address). By calculating the physical index of acoustics, I examined the differences between the two cases. The degree of improvement in listening with the help of PA has also been studied by testing the voice articulation with the use of the measured impulse response. As a result, I found that the clearness is enhanced by increasing the sound pressure level in the case of short reverberation. However, it was not the case when the reverberation time was long.
