Quality of Retailer Education Program and its Effect on Loyalty and Business Performance (교육서비스 품질이 지원 사업 충성도와 경영성과에 미치는 영향 : 사업체 형태를 중심으로)

  • In 2013, the small retailer organized support service, which commenced in 2009, has been expanding its place in the policy by transforming into a small retailer cooperating support service. This support service supports two main sides. One of them is strengthening the financial aspects of the scale by organizing the small retailers in order to make the distribution efficient. The second is improving the management and enhancing the efficiency through visitation education. This research focuses on studying the effects of the visitation education which is one of the two aspects of small retailers support service. Empirical analysis on the effects of the visitation education's quality on the loyalty of support service and business performance was performed in detail by dividing the structure of the companies into chain form and combined form of small retailers. According to the results of the analysis, the visitation education's quality positively affected the support service's loyalty without any restrictions on the structures of the retailers. However in the business performances, the visitation education's quality only showed positive effects on the combined form of small retailers. Therefore, it is implied that in order to continuously receive support program by increasing the loyalty of the retailers, the quality of the visitation education must be increased and the retailer support service need to be considering the structure of the companies in order to improve small retailer's business performance.

An Analysis of the Effects of Large-scale Retailer Operation Regulations on Agriculture and Fisheries (대형 유통업체 영업 규제가 농수산업에 미치는 영향 분석)

  • Purpose - The Korean government has revised the distribution industry development law to regulate large-scale retailer operations to protecting medium- and small-scale retailers and traditional markets. According to the revised law, large-scale retailers must follow regulations on operating hours and compulsory store closures two days per month. Based on the revised distribution industry development law, most local governments regulate operation hours and they have adopted compulsory closure programs for large-scale retail stores. However, it is argued that fresh food producers suffer from a decrease in sales based on the compulsory closure of stores operated by large-scale retailers. Large-scale retailers reduce their fresh food orders from agricultural and fishery producers because of the compulsory store closures. Fresh food producers also suffer from a decrease in prices because reduced orders lead to a decrease in auction prices based on the availability of excess goods in wholesale markets. This paper investigates the effects of operation regulations for large-scale retailers on agricultural producers by surveying agricultural and fishery producer organizations. Research design, data, methodology - A survey was conducted on 117 producer organizations of fruits and vegetables, cereals, fisheries, and livestock products from September 10 to October 4, 2012. Survey items are annual sales, shares of sales accounted for by large-scale retailers, reduction of orders and prices from large-scale retailers, methods to deal with the sales reduction, unfair trade practices of large-scale retailers, opinion of the large-scale retailer regulations, and so on. The average sales of the sampled producer organizations are 13.7 billion won and the average share of sales accounted for by large-scale retailers is 35.4%. Results - Survey results show that the sample producer organizations' sales decreased 10.1% because of the compulsory closures of stores operated by large-scale retailers. It is estimated that the total sales of producer organizations decreased 371.2 billion won because of the regulations on the operation of large-scale retailers. In addition to the direct effect of a sales decrease due to order reduction, agricultural and fishery producer organizations suffered from the secondary effect of price reduction in wholesale markets. When orders from large-scale retailers decreased, most agricultural and fishery producer organizations shipped redundant products to wholesale markets, decreasing auction prices. It was estimated that the price received decreased 21.9% when sold in other marketing channels. As producer organization sales decreased, it was reported that the labor force employed by producer organizations also decreased by 15.1%. Therefore, we can conclude that the regulations for large-scale retailer operations resulted in negative impacts on agricultural producers. Conclusions - Although the sales reduction due to the regulations for large-scale retailer operations are not great, the cumulative effects due to the continued compulsory closure of stores operated by large-scale retailers could be great. This paper suggests governmental programs that could help agricultural producer organizations to find new and effective marketing channels such as direct marketing, farmers' markets, exports, Internet shopping, and so on.

Effect of Retailer Credibility on Attitude to Private Brand and Product Purchase Intention (유통업체 신뢰성이 유통업체 브랜드(PB)에 대한 태도 및 PB상품의 구매의도에 미치는 영향)

  • The market share of private brand(PB) is growing at a rapid pace. Based on the previous studies, consumers pay more attention to the extrinsic cues when they buy the PB products. This paper proposes an integrated model to examine how the retailer credibility which is one of the important extrinsic cues affects perceived quality variation, value consciousness, attitude to PB, and PB product purchase intention. Also, familiarity with PB is regarded as a moderating variable that can interact with retailer credibility. An analysis of 199 useable questionnaires found that retailer credibility has a significant impact on the attitude to PB, directly and indirectly. Further, the moderating effect of familiarity with PB was significant. For this, we interpret that when consumers are more familiar with the private brand, they tend to have few bias toward the quality of PB. These findings provide several effective strategies for the development of PB, such that retailers must improve consumer's familiarity with PB via various promotions like free samples or testing events. Academic and practical implications of the study findings and future research directions are also discussed.

Quantifying the Bullwhip Effect in a Supply Chain Considering Seasonal Demand (공급사슬에서 계절적 수요를 고려한 채찍효과 측도의 개발)

  • The bullwhip effect refers to the phenomenon where demand variability is amplified when one moves upward a supply chain. In this paper, we exactly quantify the bullwhip effect for cases of seasonal demand processes in a two-echelon supply chain with a single retailer and a single supplier. In most of the previous research, some measures of performance for the bullwhip effect are developed for cases of non-seasonal demand processes. The retailer performs demand forecast with a multiplicative seasonal mixed model by using the minimum mean square error forecasting technique and employs a base stock policy. With the developed bullwhip effect measure, we investigate the impact of seasonal factor on the bullwhip effect. Then, we prove that seasonal factor plays an important role on the occurrence of the bullwhip effect.

  • The objective of this study is to develop an optimal joint cost from the perspectives of both the manufacturer and the retailer. The integrated production-inventory model with Weibull distribution deteriorating items is assumed to have a constant demand rate. A limited retailer storage space and multiple delivery per order are considered in this model. A numerical example including the sensitivity analysis is given to validate the results of the production-inventory model.

  • There was a lot of research to integration of the transshipment and inventory problem in supply chain. Such a integration of inventory and transshipment problem called IRP (Inventory Routing Problem). We consider a distribution problem in which a set of products has to be shipped from a supplier to several retailers in a given planning horizon. Transshipment from the supplier to the retailer is performed by vehicles of limited capacity. Each retailer determines replenishment leadtime and order quantity with buffer management. A supplier determines optimal vehicle routing in supply chain. We suggest a heuristic algorithm which be used TOC buffer management in a replenishment problem and a tabu search algorithm in VRP (Vehicle Routing Problem).

  • 공급사슬상에서의 구성원간 협력이 보편화되어가는 현재의 추세에 따라 본 논문은 공급자-판매자로 구성된 공급 사슬에서의 옵션 계약을 통한 구성원간 협력 문제에 대해 연구하였다. 구체적으로, 본 논문은 가격이 공급자에 의해 결정되고 옵션 계약 물량이 판매자에 의해 결정될 경우에 대한 공급사슬 전체 관점 및 각 구성원 관점에서의 최적 옵션 가격, (옵션) 행사 가격, 현물 시장 가격, 옵션 계약 물량 결정 문제를 계량적으로 연구하였다. 본 논문의 연구결과를 통해 옵션 계약이 공급사슬에서의 구성원간 협력에 이용되는 경우에 대한 좀 더 나은 이해가 가능하며, 본 논문에서 제시한 예제는 실제 공급사슬상에서의 최종 소비자 수요가 정규분포나 연속균등분포등의 특정 분포를 따를 경우에 대한 최적 가격 및 옵션 계약 물량 계산 방법을 설명한다.

Development of the Decision Support System for Vendor-managed Inventory in the Retail Supply Chain (소매점 공급사슬에서 공급자 주도 재고를 위한 의사결정지원시스템의 개발)

  • Vendor-managed inventory(VMI) is a supply chain strategy to improve the inventory turnover and customer service in supply chain management. Unfortunately, many VMI programs fail because they simply transfer the transactional aspects of placing replenishment orders from customer to vendor. In fact, such VMI programs often degrade supply chain performance because vendors lack capability to plan the VMI operations effectively in an integrated way under the dynamic, complex, and stochastic VMI supply chain environment. This paper presents a decision support system, termed DSSV, for VMI in the retail supply chain. DSSV supports the market forecasting, vendor's production planning, retailer's inventory replenishment planning, vehicle routing, determination of the system operating parameter values, retailer's purchase price decision, and what-if analysis. The potential benefits of DSSV include the provision of guidance, solution, and simulation environment for enterprises to reduce risks for their VMI supply chain operations.

The Impact of Coordination on Stocking and Promotional Markdown Policies for a Supply Chain

  • Results of a study of the coordination effect in stocking and promotional markdown policies for a supply chain consisting of a retailer and a discount outlet (DCO) are reported here. We assume that the products are sold in two consecutive periods: Normal Sales Period (NSP) and subsequent Promotional Sales Period (PSP). When managers in the two periods coordinate, they share information on the demand forecast and jointly decide the stocking quantity, markdown time schedule, and markdown price to maximize mutual profit. In the absence of coordination, decisions are decentralized to optimize the individual party's objective function. Optimal coordination policy for the retailer/DCO problem setting is analyzed, and the coordination policy is compared with the uncoordinated policy to explore factors that make coordination an effective approach.

Analyzing the Dysfunction of Fully Shared Stock Information in a Supply Chain with Competiting Retailers (경쟁적 소매상으로 구성된 공급사슬에서 정보공유의 역효과에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this paper is to show the effect of information sharing strategy on the supply chain performances. While traditional information sharing models assumed centralized stock information, recent supply chain practices often implement fully shared stock information, where real-time stock information is accessible on retailers. When retailers are competing with each other, this fully shared stock information may incur retailers' strategic order behaviors. Thus, this paper analyzes a simple two-level supply chain consisting of one warehouse and two identical competing retailers where the real time stock information is fully shared. The warehouse uses the traditional echelon stock policy. Under this environment the retailers' reorder decisions are derived using the order risk concept and the retailer competition mechanism is analyzed. Computational results show that the supply chain performace degradation in the fully shared stock information is quite significant, implying the importance of designing information sharing strategies in the supply chain design phase.
