  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of laser acupuncture at $HT_7$ for reducing mental stress using power spectrum analysis of the heart rate variability. Methods : 36 healthy volunteers(control group: 18, treatment group: 18) participated in this study. After instrumentation and 5-minute rest period, 5-minute metal stress by operation was provided. HRV was recorded before and after the mental stress(1st, 2nd HRV). After 2nd HRV recording, the control group rested for 15 minutes without any treatments. Participants in the treatment group received laser acupuncture to $HT_7$ unilaterally and rested for 15minutes. Points were irradiated for 60seconds, and the intensity was 1.8J(output 20%). And then 3rd HRV was recorded. Results : In simple rest group, LF norm showed a significant change after mental stress. In laser acupuncture group, LF norm, HF norm, LF, HF and LF/HF ratio showed a significant change after mental stress. But there were no significant difference between two groups(ANCOVA test, p>0.05). In laser acupuncture group, LF norm, HF norm, HF and LF/HF ratio showed a significant change after laser acupuncture treatment. And there were significant differences between two groups(p<0.05). Conclusions : This study suggests that laser acupuncture at $HT_7$ can regulate and prevent the alternation of autonomic nervous system due to mental stress.

  • This study investigated the effect of 40% oxygen administration on the addition task performance in three levels of difficulties and physiological signals. Ten male and female college students were selected as the subjects for this study. The experiment consisted of two runs: one was a addition task, with normal air (21% oxygen) administered and the other was with hyperoxic air (40% oxygen) administered. The experimental sequence in each run consisted of Rest1 (3 min), Task1 (1 min, one digit addition task), Task2 (1 min, two digit addition task), Task3 (1 min, three digit addition task), and Rest2 (4 min). Blood oxygen saturation and heart rate were measured throughout the five phases. The accuracy rates of the addition task were enhanced with 40% oxygen administration compared to 21% oxygen. Difference in the accuracy rates grew higher with the rise of difficulty. When 40% concentration oxygen is supplied, blood oxygen saturation increased and heart rate was decreased comparing to 21%. This study showed that the supply of high concentration oxygen increases blood oxygen saturation, which in turns accelerates brain activation resulting from cognitive process and enhances arithmetic abilities. Particularly when difficulty is high, demand for oxygen increases and, as a result, the effect of high concentration oxygen becomes more significant.

  • This study investigated differences in blood oxygen saturation($SpO_2$) and heart rate(HR) according to flow rate, gender, and phase in males and females in their 60s when the supply of 93% highly concentrated oxygen administration was changed (1L/min, 3L/min, and 5L/min). It recruited totally 20 elderly subjects including 10 males($68.0{\pm}2.6$ years) and 10 females ($65.5{\pm}3.1$ years). The experiment consisted of three phages of Rest 1(5 min), Hyperoxia(10 min), and Rest 2(10 min), and $SpO_2$[%] and HR[bpm] were measured during all phages. $SpO_2$ was higher in Hyperoxia phase supplied with highly concentrated oxygen than in Rest phases. Higher flow rate was associated with more increase in $SpO_2$. HR was reduced in Hyperoxia phase compared to Rest phases. More supply of highly concentrated oxygen was associated with more decrease of HR. However, there were no differences in both $SpO_2$ and HR according to gender.

  • We investigated the effects of prolonged exposure in hot environmental condition and ingestion of fluid on various physiological variables including plasma glucose, lactate, the rating of perceived exertion (RPE), and heart rate as well as golf putting performance. Six male professional golfers were voluntarily participated in three different putting trials which were separated by seven days of time interval period. Three different putting trials were conducted at either 20℃ or 32℃, or 32℃ + Fluid ingestion. Performing 32℃ + Fluid ingestion trial, all subject ingested sport drink as much as their body mass was decreased. For each experiment, all subjects were undertaken total 48 putting, which separated by four x 12 putting in four different time points (i.e., Rest, 1 hr, 2 hr, and 3 hr). Plasma glucose concentration was significantly decreased with hot ambient condition but it was almost fully recovered by fluid ingestion. Plasma lactate concentration was significantly higher when subjects were exposed in hot environmental condition, and it did not change with fluid ingestion. There was a no different in putting performance and psychological fatigue level (performed by GRID test) at any environmental conditions. The RPE, commonly used for evaluating of physical fatigue level, was significantly dropped by fluid ingestion which indicates lower physical fatigue level. In addition to this, heart rate (HR) was also significantly decreased after fluid ingestion. Based on these results, it was concluded that the ingestion of fluid during prolonged exposure in hot ambient condition decrease the degree of physical fatigue levels and heart rate, which will possibly improve the golf performance when exposed in extreme weather condition in summer. • The purpose of this study is to define the effect of taping and icing on muscle fatigue at knee joint of ordinary adult. The 30 adults meeting research standard were chosen to be observed. The period of the research was 9 days and N-K table was used as equipment to measure position sense of knee joint. Heart rate monitor was also used to measure heart beat during both when in comfortable state and in exercises. For the method of this study, error in position sense of knee joint was measured right before fatigue occurs. Then volunteers were to be exercised for 10 minutes in treadmill aiming to raise the heart beat to 90%. If muscle fatigue occurs after the exercise, let the comparative group rest for 20 minutes while applying taping for group 1 and icing for group 2. For the icing, it was applied for 3 minutes followed by 1 minute rest. 5 sets of icing were applied on thighs and calf each, Then error of position sense of knee joint was measured same way it was done before muscle fatigue. As the result, there were similar differences among comparative group(p<.05), group 1 and group 2 before the muscle fatigue and after the muscle fatigue. There were similar differences in comparative group with muscle fatigue, group 1 and group 2 as the result of one-way ANOVA and with further examination, similar differences were only found in between comparative group and group 2(p<.05). With the result, we can see there wasn't clear effect of rest, icing or taping, however, group 2 with icing showed better condition compared to comparative group who have rested without any application.

  • To evaluate training effect, aerobic dance was performed by eight female collegestudents for 8 weeks. Body composition, cardiopulmonary function at rest and during maximal exercise, blood cholesterol concentration at rest were determined before and after 8weeks of aerobic dance training. Maximal exercise was performed on the treadmill according of Bruce protocol. Pre to post training differences were evaluated. The results obtained were as follows : 1. After the training, skinfold thickness and total body fat decreased significantly(p<0.1) while lean body mass increased with significance (p<0.1). 2. Heart rate and arterial blood pressure at rest decreased without sinificance after the training. 3. As a result of training, forced vital capacity and forced expiratory volume for a second increased significantly (p<0.01, p<0.1). 4. After the training period, heart rate at 3, 6, and 9 min. during treadmill exercise was significantly lower than those of pretraining (p<0.05). 5. After the training, systolic and diastolic blood pressure at 6 and 9 min during the exercise was significantly lower than those of pretraining (p<0.025, p<0.1). 6. After the training, oxygen uptake at 3 and 6 min during the exercise was significantly greater than those of pretraining (p<0.05). 7. As a result of training, the maximal oxygen uptake increased significantly during the exercise (p<0.1). 8. After the training, expired air volume for a minute at 3 and 6 min during the exercise was signigicantly grerter than those of pretraining (p<0.1). 9. After the training, repiratory quotient during the exercise was lower than pretaining without significance. 10. After the training, blood HDL -cholesterol concentration incereased with significance, (p<0.1) blood total cholesterol and triglycerids concentration decreasedsignificantly (p<0.1). From these results, it may be concluded that 8 week aerobic dance training reduces skinfold thickness and body fat contents, improves the cardiopulmonary function and tissue oxygen utilization, reduces blood cholesterol and triglyceride concentration and brings about the increase of blood HDL-cholesterol concentriation.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the fully immersive virtual reality (FIVR) program changes in the autonomic nervous system (ANS) by age according to heart rate variability (HRV). Methods: A total of 44 subjects were classified into group 1(aged 20-30), group 2(aged 40-60), and group 3(aged 70 and above). The study analyzed the HRV using a pulse wave analyzer and compared the ANS changes before and after applying the FIVR of the group. The LF, HF, RMSSD, and SDNN were measured. Fifteen minutes of virtual reality applications were applied to all subjects, and 1 min of rest was given in the middle of the session. A was used for anteroposterior comparisons of the ANS. Results: The HF, LF, RMSSD, and SDNN values were not statistically significant in all groups, but they all increased. The RMSSD value was statistically significant because it increased in group 3 (p<0.05). Those of the other two groups were not statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusion: An FIVR program does not have a negative effect on the ANS response.
