  • In this study thermal characteristics of heat-responsive element considering conduction, convection and rate of change of element using Response Time Index (RTI) applied to sensitivity test of sprinkler head at home and aborad are theoretically investigated. Analytic solution of temperature distributions with radial direction and time is obtained form energy transport equations, non-homogeneous 2th order partial differential equation, applying to constant wall temperature and symmetric condition in order to analyze thermal characteristics of heat-responsive element for circular cylindrical geometry. Base on the results, the analytic method of this study is fundamental data to practical use for sensitivity test of sprinkler head and design of heat-responsive element.

  • Purpose: Phenylketonuria (PKU) is the first inherited metabolic disease of which treatment is known. We performed this study to find out clinical symptoms and prognosis of tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) responsive PKU patients and genetic relation. Methods: Clinical, biochemical, genetic analysis were done retrospectively in 23 patients diagnosed BH4 responsive PKU in Soonchunhyang University Hospital from March 2000 to September 2012. Results: Patients were classified to mild hyperphenylalaninemia and mild phenylketonuria with initial plasma phenylalanine level below 20 mg/dL. After BH4 loading, blood phenylalanine decrease level ranged between 37% and 99%. Initial treatment with low phenylalanine formula or BH4 was started before 2 month after birth except 2 patients. And one of them resulted in developmental delay in language and social activity. The others showed satisfactory progress without developmental delay. In genetic analysis, of 46 allele, R241C allele mutation was identified most commonly (41%). R241C/A259T, R241C/R243Q, R241C/V388M, R241C/T278I was detected in 5 (21.7%), 3 (13%), 2 (8%), 2 (8%) patients, respectively. Conclusion: R241C mutation was detected most frequently in this study group and R243Q mutation which is known to be prevalent in Korean PKU patients was found in 4 patients (8.6%). Early diagnosis and treatment is important in PKU patients.

  • Available daylight in inside offers comfortable view environment, and psychological and physical advantages to people in the room. But, it has a problem of an excessive direct sunlight. This study calculated daylight responsive dimming control slope by Roller Shade system with Mock-up test. With three 1/2 scale Mock-up rooms, we performed a test for calculation of daylight responsive dimming control slope in different shade height of each room through the different height of roller shade systems. This research will be used as a fundamental study for automated roller shade systems.

  • The local field distribution around gold nanosphere-gold plane junction has been studied using the finitedifference time-domain (FDTD) electrodynamics calculation procedure. We find that both the in-plane and out-of-plane polarized excitation produce enhanced field strong enough to explain the observed SERS activities of the junctions. Comparison with a simple dipole-image dipole model shows that the enhanced field primarily originates from the multipole-image multipole interaction, which indicates that the detailed fine-structures of the nanoparticles also play a significant role in the SERS activities as well.

  • The responsive characteristics of hydrogen-responsive glass electrode in various buffer solutions of methanol, N,N-dimethylformamide and acetonitrile were examined. The potentials were attained more rapidly with an electrode stored in the same solvent medium than that stored in water before use. However, the time to be required for a stable potential increased with the basicity of buffer solution, and it was not provide a constant potential in the strong basic solution of these solvent. Even in acidic solution, the potential was varied according to the past usage of the electrode.

  • EST analysis was performed to identify stress-responsive and immune-related genes from mud loach (Misgurnus mizolepis), cDNA libraries were constructed with liver, intestine and kidney tissues and randomly chosen clones (216 for liver, 198 for intestine and 224 for kidney) were subjected to automated sequence analysis. Of 638 clones sequenced in totlal, approximalely 25% of ESTs was novel sequences (no match to GenBank) or sequences with high homology to hypothrtical/unknown genes. Several potential stress-responsive biomarker and/or immure-related genes were identified in all the tissues examined. It included lectin, MHC class I/II proteins, proteinase inhibitors, superoxide dismulase, catalase, glutathionc-S. transferase, heat-shock protein, warm temperature acclimation protein, complements, methylrransferasc, zinc finger proteins, macrophage maturation associated protein, and others. This information will offer new possibilities as fundamental baseline data for the molecular genetics and breeding of this species with an emphasis on the development of stress. • Photonic band gap (PBG) materials have been of great interest due to their potential applications in science and technology. Their applications can be further extended when PBG becomes tunable against various chemical and electrical stimuli. In recent, it was found that tunable photonic band gap materials can be achieved by incorporating stimuli-responsive smart gels into PBG materials. For example, the characteristic volume phase transition of gels in response to the various external stimuli including temperature, pH, ionic strength, solvent compositions and electric field were recently combined with the unique optical properties of photonic crystals to form unprecedented highly responsive optical components. Since these responsive photonic crystals are capable of reversibly converting chemical or electrical energy into characteristic optical signals, they have been considered as a good platform for label-free chemical or biological detection, actuators or optical switches as well as a model system for investigating gel swelling behavior. Herein, we report block copolymer photonic gels self-assembled from polystyrene-b-poly (2-vinyl pyridine) (PS-b-P2VP) block copolymers. In this talk, we are going to demonstrate that selective swelling of lamellar structure can be effectively utilized for fabricating PBG materials with extremely large tunability. Optical properties and their applications will be discussed.

  • Iron regulatory proteins (IRPs) 1 and 2 bind with equally high affinity to specific RNA stem-loop sequences known as iron-responsive elements (IRE) which mediate the post-transcriptional regulation of many genes of iron metabolism. To study putative IRE-like sequences in RNA transcripts using the IRP-IRE interaction, Eight known genes from database were selected and the RNA binding activity of IRE-like sequences were compared to IRP-2. Among them, the IRE-like sequence in 3'-untranslational region (UTR) of divalent ration transporter-1 (DCT-1) shows a significant RNA binding affinity. This finding predicts that IRE consensus sequence present within 3'-UTR of DCT-1 might confer the regulation by IRP-2.
