In the current design process for the lower arm used in automobile parts, an optimal solution of its various design variables should be found through exploration of the design space approximated using the response surface model formulated with a first- or second-order polynomial equation. In this study, a multi-level computational DOE (design of experiment) was carried out to explore the design space showing nonlinear behavior, in terms of factors such as the total weight and applied stress of the lower arm, where a fractional-factorial orthogonal array based on the artificial neural network model was introduced. In addition, the tolerance robustness of the optimal solution was estimated using a tolerance optimization with six sigma constraints, taking into account the tolerances occurring in the design variables.

The optimal rib pattern design of B-pillar trim considering occupant head protection can be determined by two methods. One is the conventional approximate optimization method that uses the statistical design of experiments (DOE) and response surface method (RSM). Generally, approximated optimum results are obtained through the iterative process by trial-and-error. The quality of results strongly depends on the factors and levels assigned by a designer. The other is a methodology derived from previous work by the authors, called the sequential design of experiments (SDOE), to reduce the trial-and-error procedure and to find an appropriate condition for using artificial neural network (ANN) systematically. An appropriate condition is determined from the iterative process based on the analysis of means. With this new technique and ANN, it is possible to find an optimum design accurately and efficiently.

In recent years, 3D printing has received increasing attention due to its potential for direct fabrication beyond the traditional rapid prototyping. 3D printing has the advantage of being able to manufacture complicated shapes that were thought impossible to produce by traditional manufacturing processes. This advantage has driven applications of 3D printing to direct manufacturing of functional parts, such as lightweight structures and component integration. In this study, a porous shell structure is designed for the purpose of weight reduction and ventilation. Finite element (FE) analyses are performed to compare the effective stiffness of the porous structure with the conventional solid structure. Structural reinforcements are also considered in order to make up the stiffness reduction due to the porosity, and the relevant FE analyses are performed to investigate the effect of the reinforcement design on the bending stiffness. The optimized reinforced structure is then proposed through response surface analysis.
It is often crucial to obtain a map of flood inundated area with more accurate and rapid manner. This study attempts to evaluate the potential of satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data for mapping of flood inundated area in Imjin river basin. Multitemporal RADARSAT SAR data of three different dates were obtained at the time of flooding on August 4 and before and after the flooding. Once the data sets were geometrically corrected and preprocessed, the temporal characteristics of relative radar backscattering were analyzed. By comparing the radar backscattering of several surface features, it was clear that the flooded rice paddy showed the distinctive temporal pattern of radar response. Flooded rice paddy showed significantly lower radar signal while the normally growing rice paddy show high radar returns, which also could be easily interpreted from the color composite imagery. In addition to delineating the flooded rice fields, the multitemporal radar imagery also allow us to distinguish the afterward condition of once-flooded rice field.

Volcanic ash components of Mt. Baekdu were estimated to response the change of water quality environment affected by Mt. Baekdu volcanic ash ejected during eruption. Then the change of water concentrations according to the sedimentation of volcanic ash components were analysed. To estimate volcanic ash components of Mt. Baekdu, similar volcanos were selected through the comparison of main foreign volcano's magma type and the selected volcanic ash components supposed as Baekdu Mountain's. To analyse the change of water concentrations, the change of harmful components affected by volcanic ash sedimentation were analysed and the results were compared with domestic drinking water quality standard. As the result, Al, Cd, F, Fe, Pb, Mg, Cl and Sr could affect to water quality. Among those components, concentrations of Cd, F, Fe, Pb and Mg were estimated to exceed the drinking water quality standard.

We investigated a flexible transparent film using the spinning multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Spin-capable MWCNTs on iron catalyzed on a SiO2 wafer was grown by chemical vapor deposition, which was performed at $780^{\circ}C$ using C2H2 and H2 gas. The average diameter and length of MWCNTs grown on the substrate were ~15 nm and $250{\sim}300{\mu}m$, respectively. The MWCNT sheets were produced by continuously pulling out from well-aligned MWCNTs on a substrate. The MWCNT sheet films were produced simply by direct coating on the flexible film or grass. The thickness of sheet film was remarkably decreased by alcohol spraying on the surface of sheet. The alcohol splay increased transmittance and decreased electrical resistance of MWCNT sheet films. Single and double sheets were produced with sheet resistance of ~699 and ${\sim}349{\Omega}/sq$, respectively, transmittance of 81~85 % and 67~72%, respectively. The MWCNT sheet films were heated through the application of direct current power. The flexible transparent heaters showed a rapid thermal response and uniform distribution of temperature. In addition, MWCNT yarns were prepared by spinning a bundle of MWCNTs from vertically super-aligned MWCNTs on a substrate, and field emission from the tip and side of the yarns was induced in a scanning electron microscope. We found that the field emission behavior from the tip of the yarn was better than the field emission from the side. The field emission turn-on voltages from the tip and side of MWCNT yarns were 1.6 and $1.7V/{\mu}m$, respectively, after the yarn was subjected to an aging process. Both the configuration of the tip end and the body of the yarn were changed remarkably during the field emission. We also performed the field emission of the sheet films. The sheet films showed the turn on voltage of ${\sim}1.45V/{\mu}m$ during the field emission.
Purpose: Biocompatible capsules have recently been highlighted as a novel platform for delivering various components, such as drug, food, and agriculture pesticides, to overcome the current limitations of living systems, such as those in agriculture, biology, the environment, and foods. However, few active targeting systems using biocompatible capsules and physical forces simultaneously have been developed in the agricultural engineering field. Methods: Here, we developed an active targeting delivery platform that uses biocompatible alginate capsules and controls movements by magnetic forces for agricultural and biological engineering applications. We designed and fabricated large-scale biocompatible capsules, using custom-made nozzles ejecting alginate solutions for encapsulation. Results: To develop the active target delivery platforms, we incorporated iron oxide nanoparticles in the large-scale alginate capsules. The sizes of alginate capsules were controlled by regulating the working conditions, such as concentrations of alginate solutions and iron oxide nanoparticles. Conclusions: We confirmed that the iron oxide particle-incorporated large-scale alginate capsules moved actively in response to magnetic fields, which will be a good strategy for active targeted delivery platforms for agriculture and biological engineering applications, such as for the controlled delivery of agriculture pesticides and biocontrol agents.

The fighter aircraft uses several different loading configurations for air-to-surface and air-to-air combat missions. To maintain wings-level flight with an asymmetric weapon configuration, a pilot controls a roll trim system. However, it is difficult to apply an accurate roll trim input for wings-level flight in the actual flight under disturbance. The inaccurate roll trim input degrades the performance of the roll autopilot system. In this paper, to solve this problem, an integrator was additionally designed in the command part of the roll autopilot system. The initial transient response was improved by scheduling the limiter to restrict the roll attitude error. As a result of the evaluation of the simulation for the designed flight control law, the roll attitude following performance was found to be improved in the autopilot system operation under the inaccurate roll trim condition.

A new approach to systematically model aerodynamic coefficients using an adaptive sampling based wind tunnel testing considering cost is proposed. The Latin Hypercube design is used for selecting initial test points. The Gaussian Process (GP) is iteratively used during the experiment to determine additional experimental points that minimizes the uncertainty reduction per incremental cost. A numerical simulation based experiment was conducted using the static aerodynamic coefficient database a fighter aircraft, which demonstrated the validity of the proposed method.

This study suggests basic data on optimum thermal insulation for spring wear through an investigation of subjective thermal sensation, self-health image and actual wearing conditions. A survey of university students using a self-administered questionnaire was conducted to collect data on subjective thermal sensation, self-health image, wearing conditions, demographics and physical characteristics. The variable of wearing conditions was measured as the response to the clothing they were wearing. Garment items (26 types for males and 41 types for females) were suggested and the items worn by the students were converted into the thermal insulation values for clothing. The main results are as follows. As for the body type perception, males perceived themselves as not fat while females perceived themselves as not thin. As for the health perception, males perceived themselves healthier than females. As for the climate adaptability perception, females were more sensitive to cold than males. The average thermal insulation of clothing was 0.97clo (0.34-1.95clo) with higher insulation for males than females. Students were more sensitive to the cold when their BMI was lower, their body surface area per body weight was larger, and the more they perceived themselves as not healthy. There was a significant correlation between the self-health image of sensitiveness to cold and the thermal insulation of clothing. The results were synthetically discussed in terms of environmental physiology.
