  • The change in farmland price has almost always been focused on not only farmers but policy-decision makers; for farmers to get information before purchasing farmland; for policy-decision makers to use appropriate policy tools to stabilize the market. So far the change in farmland price has been calculated as a form of average change on a year-to-year base. Such calculations have become one of the causes which lead to misunderstanding of the farmland market because the year-to-year average change includes changes in price as well as changes in the number of trades and sizes of traded farmland. This paper is designed to suggest a proper method of building a price index for farmland as a tool to review the price change. We considered the applicability of several types of price indices and concluded that a Laspeyres-type price index is the most reasonable choice. A Laspeyres-type price index, however, has a shortcoming in which a reference year's weight may affect the whole period of an index. Thus, we also suggest two other weights, a three-year average including a reference year and a share of farmland. All indices show that farmland prices have risen significantly in recent 10 years. We hope that the indices will be developed into one of the government's formal statistics.

  • This study analyzes the determinants of greenhouse gas emissions using data from 16 metropolitan municipalities in South Korea. The STIRPAT model, which probabilistically models environmental impacts, was employed for the analysis. Both homogeneous and heterogeneous panel analyses were utilized. Recognizing that results from homogeneous panel analysis could be distorted due to the characteristics of panel data, cross-sectional dependence and slope homogeneity tests were conducted. The tests indicated that it is appropriate to use estimates that consider cross-sectional dependence and reflect slope heterogeneity. Therefore, the results from heterogeneous panel analysis were presented as the main findings. The analysis identified income (per capita GRDP) and energy efficiency (energy intensity) as key determinants of greenhouse gas emissions. Conversely, population was found not to be a key factor, and the industrial structure of the regions (share of the service industry in value-added) was also identified as a potential determinant of greenhouse gas emissions. The hypothesis of the Environmental Kuznets Curve was not statistically significant, suggesting that improving energy efficiency, rather than income growth and economic development, would be the most effective policy tool for reducing greenhouse gases in each municipality.

  • We developed the first automatic design system targeting a promising hybrid CMOS-Nanoelectronics Architecture called CMOL. The CMOL architecture uses NOR gates to implement combinational logic. In this hybrid CMOS-nanoelectronics architecture, logical functions and the interconnections share the nanoelectronics hardware resource. Towards automating the CMOL physical design process, we developed a model for the CMOL architecture, formulated the placement and routing problems for the CMOL architecture subject to the unique CMOL specific constraints, and solved it by combining a placement algorithm with a gate assignment algorithm in a loop. We validated the proposed approach by implementing several industrial strength designs.

  • This study seeks to analyze the needs of biotechnology companies in relation to their entry into the marine biotechnology industry and to discuss the policy implications associated with empirical tasks based on issues raised from empirical results gathered from a survey data of 200 biotechnology companies in Korea. This study made a comparison between marine and non-marine biotechnology companies and analyzed non-marine biotechnology companies' needs related to their entry into the marine biotechnology companies by using Social Network Analysis (SNA). Empirical results indicate that 23.5% of biotechnology companies produce goods using marine bio-resources. Once the utility of marine bio-resources is established, 58.8% of non-marine biotechnology companies intend to enter the marine biotechnology industry. This study also shows that non-marine biotechnology companies need technical support, information sharing, and the acquisition of raw materials to enter the marine biotechnology industry. The findings in this study provide important pointers for the direction of policies and future research in the area of marine biotechnology industry.

  • In the northwestern Pacific region, the pen shell (Atrina pectinata) is a widely distributed bivalve and economically important in fisheries. Recently, stock of this species has been greatly reduced due to overexploitation and marine pollution, which arouses interest in conservation. Studies on genetic and taxonomic entities of pen shells have not been tried in Korea, which makes difficult to take measures for effective conservation of this marine resource. In this study, we investigated mitochondrial genetic polymorphism of pen shells collected from 4 locations in Korea and Japan using cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene sequences. A total of 39 haplotypes were identified among 86 individuals of pen shell. Although only 5 haplotypes were shared, no significant genetic differentiation was observed between Korean and Japanese populations. These results suggest that pen shell populations of these regions share an ancestral population which might have experienced expansion during the Pleistocene, but gene flow must have been highly restricted after expansion.

  • Coordination between supply chain partners is viewed critical to effective supply chain management. In many situations such as mutual investments or developing infrastructures for their operations related with each other, the coordination issue arises. Depending on the bargaining power balance between them, it is determined who will be able to exert more influence in making decisions related with such coordination. We consider two cases of the decision-making structure in the context of a simple supply chain consisting of two players, i.e., (1) the first case in which a supply chain partner dominates the decision-making process and the other passively follows the dominant player's decision, and (2) the other case in which the two players share the decision-making process equally. We examine which of the cases is better for the companies and where comes the value of the better case. To answer the research questions, we set up an optimal control theory model and derive an analytical solution. The analysis outcome indicates that the shared decision-making in general produces better results for both companies in the supply chain, and the value of the shared decision-making comes from more effective resource utilization than the dominated case.

  • In spite of increasing complexity of wireless sensor network applications, most of the sensor node platforms still have severe resource constraints. Especially a small amount of memory and absence of a memory management unit (MMU) cause many problems in managing application thread stacks. Hence, a shared-stack was proposed, which allows several threads to share one single stack for minimizing the amount of memory wasted by fixed-size stacks. In this paper, we present the memory usage models for thread stacks by deriving the overflow probability of the fixed-size stack and the shared-stack and also show that the shared-stack is more reliable than the fixed-size stack.

  • Many peer-to-peer (p2p) systems have been studied in distributed, ubiquitous computing environments. Distributed hash table (DHT)-based p2p systems can improve load-balancing even though locality utilization and user mobility are not guaranteed. We propose a mobile locality-based hierarchical p2p overlay network (MLH-Net) to address locality problems without any other services. MLH-Net utilizes mobility features in a mobile environment. MLH-Net is constructed as two layers, an upper layer formed with super-nodes and a lower layer formed with normal-nodes. Because super-nodes can share advertisements, we can guarantee physical locality utilization between a requestor and a target during any discovery process. To overcome a node failure, we propose a simple recovery mechanism. The simulation results demonstrate that MLH-Net can decrease discovery routing hops by 15% compared with JXTA and 66% compared with Chord.

  • Concurrent competition for finite resources by multiple parts in flexible manufacturing systems(FMS's) and inappropriate initial marking or net structure of Petri net with share resources results in deadlock. This is an important issue to be addressed in the operation of the systems. Deadlock is a system state so that some working processes can never be finished. Deadlock situation is due to a wrong resource allocation policy. In fact, behind a deadlock problem there is a circular wait situation for a set of resources. Deadlock can disable an entire system and make automated operation impossible. Particularly, an unmanned system cannot recover from such a status and a set of jobs waits indefinitely for never-to-be-released resources. In this paper, we proposed a deadlock prevention method using siphon and trap of Petri net. It is based on potential deadlock which are siphon that eventually became empty. This method prevents the deadlock by the control of transition fire and initial marking in the Petri net. An given example of FMS is shown to illustrate our results with deadlock-free.
