  • A low melting borosilicate glass frit was used as an adhesion promoter, which enables $MnWO_4$to be sintered with in a reasonable sintering temperature range ($800∼1000^{\circ}C$). The glass was evaluated for glass transition temperature ($Τ_{g}$ X) and thermal expansion coefficient($\alpha$). Mechanical property (Vickers hardness), grain growth, the comparison of lattice parameter and pore distribution of sintered $MnWO_4$ with the frit were methodically discussed. As sintering temperature increased, a typical liquid phase sintering showed the rapid grain growth and high densification of X$MnWO_4$grain, improvement of hardness (until $920^{\circ}C$) and different pore size distribution. Resistance of sintered $MnWO_4$varied from 450k$\Omega$ to 8.8M$\Omega$ under the measuring humidify ranging from 30 to 90%. Thus, the results will contribute to the application of glass frit containing sensor materials and their future use.

  • In this study, bulk nano-crystalline $Si_3N_4$ ceramics were fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) and their mechanical properties, in particular wear, were investigated. A wide range of grain sizes, from 80 nm and 250 nm were obtained by varying sintering conditions ($1550^{\circ}C$-5 min to $1650^{\circ}C$-20 min). The elastic modulus of obtained ceramics was ${\sim}250$ GPa and hardness was in the range of $13{\sim}14$ GPa. The indentation fracture toughness increased from $2.58MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ to $3.24MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ with increasing sintering temperature possibly due to the elongated grains. Sliding wear tests revealed at least an order magnitude improvement in wear resistance with grain refinement. Microstructure analysis indicated that nano-$Si_3N_4$ specimens worn mainly through delamination and microcracking, while that of coarser specimens revealed severe wear with grain debonding and fracture.

  • This study was carried out to analyze the microstructure characteristics of electrolyte membrane through XRD, SEM and AC impedance measurement for using in high temperature steam electrolysis(HTE). It was investigated that thermal stability and electric characteristics by sintering condition using dry and wet process, and confirmed growth of particle and density change by sintering temperature. The sintering temperature and behavior had an effect on the relative density of the ceramic and the average grain size. The more amount of dispersant in organic compound increase, the more the density increased. But the binder was shown opposite phenomenon. It was analyzed that electrolyte resistance and electrical characteristics using AC impedance. The electrical properties of YSZ grain boundary changed with the sintering temperature.

  • W-Ti-C-N based multiphase hard materials have been prepared from WC/TiN powder mixture. By sintering at and above 190$0^{\circ}C$, the two phases of powder mixture has transformed into intermixed W, W2C and Ti(C, N) phases. For the temperature range between 180$0^{\circ}C$ and 210$0^{\circ}C$, the sintered or hot pressed samples show maximum density and hardness. The seems that metallic W grains enhance the fracture toughness of materials. The wear resistance of the material is found to increase with increasing hardness.

  • The increasing interest in light weight materials coupled to the need for cost -effective processing have combined to create a significant opportunity for aluminum P/M. particularly in the automotive industry in order to reduce fuel emissions and improve fuel economy at affordable prices. Additional potential markets for Al PIM parts include hand tools. Where moving parts against gravity represents a challenge; and office machinery, where reciprocating forces are important. Aluminum PIM adds light weight, high compressibility. low sintering temperatures. easy machinability and good corrosion resistance to all advantages of conventional iron bm;ed P/rv1. Current commercial alloys are pre-mixed of either the AI-Si-Mg or AL-Cu-Mg-Si type and contain 1.5% ethylene bis-stearamide as an internal lubricant. The powder is compacted in closed dies at pressure of 200-500Mpa and sintered in nitrogen at temperatures between $580~630^{\circ}C$ in continuous muffle furnace. For some applications no further processing is required. although most applications require one or more secondary operations such as sizing and finishing. These sccondary operations improve the dimension. properties or appearance of the finished part. Aluminum is often considered difficult to sinter because of the presence of a stable surface oxide film. Removal of the oxide in iron and copper based is usually achieved through the use of reducing atmospheres. such as hydrogen or dissociated ammonia. In aluminum. this occurs in the solid st,lte through the partial reduction of the aluminum by magncsium to form spinel. This exposcs the underlying metal and facilitates sintering. It has recently been shown that < 0.2% Mg is all that is required. It is noteworthy that most aluminum pre-mixes contain at least 0.5% Mg. The sintering of aluminum alloys can be further enhanced by selective microalloying. Just 100ppm pf tin chnnges the liquid phase sintering kinetics of the 2xxx alloys to produce a tensile strength of 375Mpa. an increilse of nearly 20% over the unmodified alloy. The ductility is unnffected. A similar but different effect occurs by the addition of 100 ppm of Pb to 7xxx alloys. The lend changes the wetting characteristics of the sintering liquid which serves to increase the tensile strength to 440 Mpa. a 40% increase over unmodified aIloys. Current research is predominantly aimed at the development of metal matrix composites. which have a high specific modulus. good wear resistance and a tailorable coefficient of thermal expnnsion. By controlling particle clustering and by engineering the ceramic/matrix interface in order to enhance sintering. very attractive properties can be achicved in the ns-sintered state. I\t an ils-sintered density ilpproaching 99%. these new experimental alloys hnve a modulus of 130 Gpa and an ultimate tensile strength of 212 Mpa in the T4 temper. In contest. unreinforcecl aluminum has a modulus of just 70 Gpa.

  • WC-Co and other similar cemented carbides have been widely used as hard materials in industrial cutting tools and as mould metals; and a number of techniques have been applied to improve its microstructural characteristics, hardness and ear resistance. Cobalt is used primarily to facilitate liquid phase sintering and acts as a matrix, i.e. a cementing phase between WC grains. A uniform distribution of metal phase in a ceramic is beneficial for improved mechanical properties of the composite. WC-Co, starting from initial powders, is vastly used for a variety of machining, cutting, drilling, and other applications because of its unique combination of high strength, high hardness, high toughness, and moderate modulus of elasticity, especially with fine grained WC and finely distributed cobalt. In this study, that started with two different compositions of initial powders, WC-7.5wt%Co and WC-12wt%Co with initial powder size being 1~3 ${\mu}m$, magnetic pulsed compaction followed by subsequent vacuum sintering were carried out to produce consolidated preforms. Magnetic Pulsed Compaction (MPC), a very short duration (~600 ${\mu}s$), high pressure (~4 Gpa), high-density preform molding method was used with varied pressure between 0.5 and 3.0 Gpa, in order to reach an initial high density that would help improve the sintering behavior. For both compositions and varied MPC pressure, before and after sintering, changes in microstructural behavior and mechanical properties were analyzed. With proper combination of MPC pressure and sintering, samples were obtained with better mechanical properties, densification and microstructural behavior, and considerably improved than other conventional processes.

  • The Ti-6Al-4V extra low interstitial (ELI) alloy has been widely used as an orthopedic implant material because of its excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility. However, it still has many problems, including a high elastic modulus and toxicity of the Al and V elements. Therefore, non-toxic biomaterials with a low elastic modulus need to be developed. A high energy mechanical milling (HEMM) process is introduced to improve the effect of sintering. Rapid sintering of spark plasma sintering (SPS) under pressure was used to make an ultra fine grain of Ti-25 wt.%Nb-7 wt.%Zr-10 wt.%Mo-(10 wt.%CPP) composites with bio-attractive elements for increasing strength. These composites were fabricated by SPS at $1000^{\circ}C$ at 60 MPa using HEMM powders. During the sintering process, $CaTiO_3$, TixOy, and CaO were formed because of the reaction between Ti and CPP. The effects of CPP content on the physical and mechanical properties of the sintered Ti-Nb-Zr-Mo-CPP composites were investigated. The biocompatibility and corrosion resistance of the Ti-Nb-Zr-Mo alloys were improved by the addition of CPP.

  • In order to investigate the effect of Al addition on the electrochemical performance and structural stability of porous Ni anode for molten carbonate fuel cell, porous Ni anodes containing Al up to 10 wt% were fabricated by the tape casting technique. In this study half-cell performance of the anodes was evaluated by anodic polarization in the simulated MCFC anode condition(650$^{\circ}C$ , 80% H$_2$+20% CO$_2$). At the anodic current of 150 ㎃/$\textrm{cm}^2$, the polarizations for H$_2$oxidation of the anode was about 100 ㎷. The sintering and creep resistance of Ni-Al anodes was higher than those of the pure Ni anode. It was considered that the increase of sintering and creep resistance was due to the formation of Al$_2$O$_3$ on the surface of Ni particles.

  • Though spodumene have a law theraml expension and good thermal shock resistance, its sintering temperature is too close to its melting point in the application for industral purpose. Solving the problems, impurities within the silicate minerals act as a frit during firing, so its densification is expected through enlargement of sintering temperature range. By the heat treatment of starting materials, mixtures of silicate mineral, lithium carbonate, if necessary SiO2 or Al2O3 were added for stoichiometric correction, in the range of 1000~125$0^{\circ}C$ for 10 hrs, $\beta$-spodumene single phase was synthesized. Mixtures with sillimanite group minerals, $\beta$-spodumene was formed at 120$0^{\circ}C$ or 125$0^{\circ}C$ via intermediate phases of petalite, Li2SiO3 and LiAlO2. For the case of kaolin group minerals, synthesis were completed at 110$0^{\circ}C$ for Hadon pink kaolin, 120$0^{\circ}C$ for New Zealand white kaolin, When pyrophyllite group minerals were used, those were at the range of 1000~125$0^{\circ}C$. Spodumene was completed at lowest temperature, 100$0^{\circ}C$ from the mixture of Wando pyrophyllite among them. Microstructure of synthesized powders showed the inrregular lump shape such as densed crystallines.
