  • Glass ionomer cement (GIC) is a tailor-made material that is used as a filling material in dentistry. GIC is cured by an acid-base reaction consisting of a glass filler and ionic polymers. When the glass filler and ionic polymers are mixed, ionic bonds of the material itself are formed. In addition, the extra polymer anion reacts with calcium in enamel or dentin to increase adhesion to the tooth tissue. GICs are widely used as adhesives for artificial crowns or orthodontic brackets, and are also used as tooth repair material, cavity liner, and filling materials. In this review, the current status of GIC research and development and its prospects for the future have been discussed in detail.

  • This study is carried out to determine the scavenging effect of resorcinol added into the urea formaldehyde resin on the formaldehyde release of plywood, as the preliminary study of using the phenolic substances. The method for formaldehyde determination used in this report is the improved chromotropic acid determination. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Resorcinol added into the urea formaldehyde adhesive acts as a good scavenger. 4 percent of resorcinol reduced the formaldehyde release to less than half content. 2. Adding resorcinol gave better glue shear strength than that of control, showing the peak of the shear strength, at 2 percent and decreased to the same strength as control along its content of 4 percent. 3. Moisture content of air dried plywood met the standard very well.

  • In this paper the failure mechanisms of polypropylene resin composites filled with calcium carbonate particulates have been studied in the temperature range $-50^{\circ}C$ to $-50^{\circ}C$ The fillers used are both untreated and surface treated with stearic acid. The impact fracture toughness is evaluated from the impact energy absorbed divided by the uncut ligament area of the specimen. Impact fracture toughness increases as temperature is raised whether the fillers are coated or not. The static fracture toughness of these particular composites is evaluated based on the linear clastic fracture toughness of these particular composites is evaluated based on the linear clastic fracture mechanics. Static fracture toughess decreases with increasing temperature whether the fillers are coated or not. An extended stress whitened zone are observed through a large number of availabel sites for cavitation/debonding along particle matrix interface and matrix deformation.

  • Guggulsterone, a hypolipidemic natural agent, is produced in resin canals of the plant Commiphora wightii. In this study, the stimulatory effects of growth retardants [ALAR (N,N-dimethylaminosuccinamic acid) and CCC (chlormequat chloride)] and fungal elicitor on guggulsterone accumulation in cell cultures of C. wightii are reported. CCC at $1\;mg\;l^{-1}$ enhanced guggulsterone content (${\sim}123\;{\mu}g\;l^{-1})$ when added on the fifth day after inoculation, while ALAR at $2.5\;{\mu}g\;l^{-1}$ increased guggulsterone content (${\sim}116\;{\mu}g\;l^{-1}$) when added on the tenth day. In a two-stage fed-batch process, combined treatment with fungal elicitor and growth retardant caused a significant increase (${\sim}353\;{\mu}g\;l^{-1}$) in guggulsterone content in cell cultures after 17 days of growth. This represents an approximately fivefold increase over the guggulsterone contents in initial cultures of this plant.

  • Optical-fiber sensors have been developed to determine the concentrations of glucose and lactic acid in blood samples. Fluorescence dye [tris(2,2'-biphenyridine)-ruthenium(II)-chloride (RuBPY)] was entrapped by using a silicon to the unclad tip of a glass optic fiber. Enzymes like glucose oxidase (GOD) and lactate oxidase (LOD) have been immobilized by acrylamide resin adhesive, adsorption with zeolite or covalent bonding with aminopropyl-triethoxysilan. The fiber-optic glucose/lactate sensor was then used to analyze the concentrations of glucose and lactate in blood samples. The results were compared with the results of HPLC analysis and their difference was in error by less then 5 %.

  • Copper -clad laminate(CCL) was fabricated and evaluated by bonding 35${\pm}$5${\mu}$ thick electroplated copper foils with a suitable adhesive to an insulating base such as phenolic resin laminate. In this study, electroplating methods and conditions were studied to produced good quality copper foils for printed circuit board applications. The electroplating bath solutions used were a copper-sulfate solution and a concentrated copper fluoborate solution. A surface roughening treatment that improved the adhesive strength of copper foils with an insulating laminate was also developed . A conventional copper sulfate solution containing sulfuric acid was used for the roughening treatment.

  • A rapid and sensitive method for the determination of glyphosate, a phosphated amino acid herbicide, in whole blood is presented. After removal of protein, the whale blood was purified by using the anion exchange resin (Dowex 1), and derivatized with 9-fluorenylmethyl chloroformate (FMCL). Derivatized glyphosate from blood sample was injected onto a Whatman partisil 10SAX column and separated with 0.1M phosphate buffer (pH 2.5) and acetonitrile (ratio=3:1). The high performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection gave the detection limit of 86pg and linearity of 0.9999 in the range of 0.25 $\mu$g/ml and 25 $\mu$g/ml. The recoveries of glyphosate added to the blood samples were ranged from 75.3% to 100.4% compared to the samples prepared in water. The derivatized glyphosate was stable at various acidity and temperature. This method has been successfully applied to the blood samples of lethal intoxication with the herbicide glyphosate.

  • The new idarubicin analogues (12 and 13) with a glucose or galactoseas as a glycone were synthesized from daunomycin (2). (+)-4-Demethoxydaunomycinone (6) obtained from reaction of 2 with $AlCl_3$ was converted to 4-trifluoromethanesulfonyl daunomycinone (7) through reaction with trifluoromethanesulfonic anhydride. The treatment of 7 with 1,1-bis-(diphenylphospino)ferrocene/$Pd(OAc)_2$ in triethylamine/formic acid/dioxane provided the idarubicinone (5b). Glycosylation of 7-hydroxy group of 5b with two kinds of tetraacetyl pyranosyl halide (8 and 9) by a modified Koenigs-Knorr procedure and then deacetylation using aqueous 0.1 N LiOH solution and amberlite cationic resin gave the objective materials. The in vitro MTT assay of the analogues (12b and 13a) in comparison with idarubicin (5a) on peripheral blood human promyelocytic-leukemia cell line and human breast cancer cell line were also described.

  • A study was made of the influence of butyl alcohol on the distribution coefficients of barium and mercury ions between the ion exchange resin, Dowex 50w-x8, 200~400 mesh and solutions containing hydrochloric acid, butyl alcohol and water. The determination of the distribution coefficients of barium and mercury are made by using the batch method. The distribution coefficients of metal ions decrease generally as the number of branches of carbon in the molecule of butyl alcohol increase. It shows that solubility in water and stereo-isomerism of the butyl alcohol have influence upon the distribution coefficient of barium and mercury.
