Properties of Fire Endurance of High Performance RC Column with Laterral Confinement Method (횡구속 방법에 따른 고성능 RC 기둥 콘크리트의 내화특성)

  • This paper is to investigate the spalling and fire endurance of high performance RC column member with PP fiber and lateral confinement of metal lath and non fire resistance removal type form. According to test results, combination of PP fiber and metal lath as well as use fire resistance non removal type form had favorable fire resistance by discharging internal vapour pressure and lateral confining. After fire endurance test, compressive strength decreased markedly caused by internal expansion pressure and crack. Residual strength of plain concrete was decreased to $22\%$. The use of PP fiber and lateral confinement of metal lath and non removal type form enhanced the residual strength above $40\%$. Especially, the combination of $0.1\%$ of PP fiber and lateral confinement with the level of 2.3T exhibited more than $51\%$ of residual strength. Therefore, to improve fire endurance and spalling resistance, the combination of $0.1\%$ of PP fiber and metal lath with 2.3T can be the proper measure.

Experimental Study on Rupturing of Artificial Flaw of Pipes for Life Prediction of Underground High Pressure Gas Pipes (지하매설 고압가스배관의 수명예측을 위한 인위결함 배관의 파열실험)

  • According to own investigation conducted by Korea Gas Safety Corporation Gas Safety Research Institute in 2017, the length of underground pipes in domestic high-pressure gas pipelines is approximately 770km, of which 84% is buried in Ulsan and Yeosu industrial complexes. In particular, 56% of underground pipelines have been in operation for more than 20 years. This suggests urgent management of buried high pressure gas pipelines. PHMSA in US and EGIG in Europe, major causes of accidents in buried gas pipelines are reported as third party damage, external corrosion and loss of pipe wall thickness. Therefore, it is important to evaluate whether the defects affect the remaining life of the pipe when defects occur in the pipe. DNV and ASME have evaluated the residual strength of pipelines through the hydraulic rupture test using pipe specimens with artifact flaws. Once the operating pressure is known through the residual strength of the pipe, the wall thickness at the point at which the pipe ruptures is calculated. If we know the accurate rate of corrosion growth, we can predict the remaining life of pipe. In the study, we carried out experiments with A53 Grade.B and A106 Grade.B, which account for 80% of domestic buried pipes. In order to modify the existing model equation, specimens with a defect depth of 80% to 90% was tested, and a formula expressing the relationship between defect and residual strength was made.

Residual stresses and viscoelastic deformation of an injection molded automotive part

  • Injection molding is one of the most common operations in polymer processing. Good quality products are usually obtained and major post-processing treatment is not required. However, residual stresses which exist in plastic parts affect the final shape and mechanical properties after ejection. Residual stresses are caused by polymer melt flow, pressure distribution, non-uniform temperature field, and density distribution. Residual stresses are predicted in this study by numerical methods using commercially available softwares, $Hypermesh^{TM},\;Moldflow^{TM}\;and\;ABAQUS^{TM}$. Cavity filling, packing, and cooling stages are simulated to predict residual stress field right after ejection by assuming an isotropic elastic solid. Thermo-viscoelastic stress analysis is carried out to predict deformation and residual stress distribution after annealing of the part. Residual stresses are measured by the hole drilling method because the automotive part selected in this study has a complex shape. Residual stress distribution predicted by the thermal stress analysis is compared with the measurement results obtained by the hole drilling method. The molded specimen has residual stress distribution in tension, compression, and tension from the surface to the center of the part. Viscoelastic deformation of the part is predicted during annealing and the deformed geometry is compared with that measured by a three dimensional scanner. The viscoelastic stress analysis with a thermal cycle will enable us to predict long term behavior of the injection molded polymeric parts.

A study of birefringence, residual stress and final shrinkage for precision injection molded parts

  • Precision injection molding process is of great importance since precision optical products such as CD, DVD and various lens are manufactured by those process. In such products, birefringence affects the optical performance while residual stress that determines the geometric precision level. Therefore, it is needed to study residual stress and birefringence that affect deformation and optical quality, respectively in precision optical product. In the present study, we tried to predict residual stress, final shrinkage and birefringence in injection molded parts in a systematic way, and compared numerical results with the corresponding experimental data. Residual stress and birefringence can be divided into two parts, namely flow induced and thermally induced portions. Flow induced birefringence is dominant during the flow, whereas thermally induced stress is much higher than flow induced one when amorphous polymer undergoes rapid cooling across the glass transition region. A numerical system that is able to predict birefringence, residual stress and final shrinkage in injection molding process has been developed using hybrid finite element-difference method for a general three dimensional thin part geometry. The present modeling attempts to integrate the analysis of the entire process consistently by assuming polymeric materials as nonlinear viscoelastic fluids above a no-flow temperature and as linear viscoelastic solids below the no-flow temperature, while calculating residual stress, shrinkage and birefringence accordingly. Thus, for flow induced ones, the Leonov model and stress-optical law are adopted, while the linear viscoelastic model, photoviscoelastic model and free volume theory taking into account the density relaxation phenomena are employed to predict thermally induced ones. Special cares are taken of the modeling of the lateral boundary condition which can consider product geometry, histories of pressure and residual stress. Deformations at and after ejection have been considered using thin shell viscoelastic finite element method. There were good correspondences between numerical results and experimental data if final shrinkage, residual stress and birefringence were compared.

Fire resistance and residual strength of reactive powder concrete Using metakaolin

  • This study investigates the fire resistance characteristics of reactive powder concrete according to changes in the cement content per unit area, mixing ratio of metakaolin (MK), and content of polypropylene fiber. A fire test was conducted, and the resulting residual strength characteristics were investigated through flexural and compressive strength measurements, as well as condition rating classification based on visual evaluation. MK effectively reduced the initial high content of calcium hydroxide, thereby reducing the water vapor pressure generated during pyrolysis and slowing spalling. Furthermore, the pore structure and loose tissue were effective for relieving the water vapor pressure in the event of a fire.

  • Recently, several high-tensile steels(e.g. 80kg and above, $2^{1/4}Cr$-1Mo)having good quality to high temperature and pressure-resistance are widely used to construct petroleum-plant and pressure vessel of heat or nuclear-power plant. However, in the steels, reheating crack at grain boundaries of the heat affected zone(HAZ) occures during post welding heat treatment(PWHT)to remove welding residual stress. In order to study theoretically the characteristics of reheating crack created by PWHT, the computer program of three-dimensional thermal-elasto-plasto-creep analysis based on finite element method are developed, and then the mechanical behavior(history of creep strain accumulation and stress relaxation, etc)of welded join in thick plate during PWTH is clarified by the numerical results.

  • In manufacturing process of composite cylinders with metal liner, the autofrettage process which induces compressive residual stress on liner to improve cycling life can be applied. In this study, finite element analysis technique is presented, which can predict accurately the compressive residual stress on liner induced by autofrettage and stress behavior after. Material and geometry non-linearity is considered in finite element analysis, and the Von-Mises stress of a liner is introduced as a key parameter that determines pressure cycling life of composite cylinders. Presented methodology is verified through fatigue test of liner material and pressure cycling test of composite cylinders.

Development of a Three-Dimensional Euler Solver for Analysis of Basic Contraction Flow (수축부 기초 유동 해석을 위한 삼차원 Euler 방정식 풀개 개발)

  • The three-dimensional Euler equations are solved numerically for the analysis of contraction flows in wind or water tunnels. A second-order finite difference method is used for the spatial discretization on the nonstaggered grid system and the 4-stage Runge-Kutta scheme for the numerical integration in time. In order to speed up the convergence, the local time stepping and the implicit residual-averaging schemes are introduced. The pressure field is obtained by solving the pressure-Poisson equation with the Neumann boundary condition. For the evaluation of the present Euler solver, numerical computations are carried out for three contraction geometries, one of which was adopted in the Large Cavitation Channel for the U.S. Navy. The comparison of the computational results with the available experimental data shows good agreement.

  • The piezoelectric ZnO thin films were deposited onto Al/Si substrate in order to figure out the crystalline and the residual stress of deposited films. As the $Ar/O_2$ gas ratio is increased, c-axis orientation of deposited films is significantly enhanced and also the residual stresses of ZnO films are all compressive. They are decreased from -1.2 GPa to -950 MPa as the $Ar/O_2$ gas ratio is increased. A diaphragm-based piezoelectric microspeaker fabricated on ONO films shows about 14 mPa output pressure at 1 kHz with $8V_{peak-to-peak}$.

  • Maintenance monitoring of the tunnel which offers continuous data during and after tunneling has been applying to tunnels in order to meet the maintenance of tunnel and to confirm continuous security of the tunnel after tunneling. But, the maintenance monitoring of tunnel results for long period is not easy to find, and moreover, the rational analysis method on tunnel monitoring has not been established yet. In this study, the relationships between displacement and stress of the tunnel concrete lining using various analysis methods are compared with maintenance monitoring. The tunnel behavior were measured in the subway tunnel passing comparative soft the weathering and analyzed both security and mechanical characteristics of the tunnel concrete lining. Also, analyzed relationship between residual water pressure applied on tunnel design and one obtained by monitoring.
