  • In this paper, the fatigue life of a laser peened structure was predicted. In order to calculate residual stress induced by laser peening finite element simulation was carried out. Modified Goodman equation was used to consider the effect of compressive residual stress induced by laser peening in fatigue analysis. In addition, additive adjustment factor approach was applied to consider S-N curve model uncertainty. Consequently, the reliable bounds of the predicted fatigue life of the laser peened structure was determined.

  • In the early stage of ship design, the rapid prediction of resistance of hull forms is required. Although there are more accurate prediction methods such as model test and CFD analysis, statistical methods are still widely used because of their cost-effectiveness and quickness in producing the results. This study suggests the prediction formula for the residual resistance coefficient (Cr) of the low-speed full ships. The formula was derived from the statistical analysis of model test results in KRISO database. In order to improve prediction accuracy, the local variables of hull forms are defined and used for the regression process. The regression formula for these variables using only principal dimensions of hull forms are also provided.

  • Understanding of wear mode and prediction of wear rate of parts in sliding contact are very important in field of meterial design relating with wear resistant. This paper has been undertaken to analyze the possibility of elucidation of wear mode and prediction of wear rate for annealed steel in sliding contact using the X-ray diffraction. The sliding wear test with various velocities using pin-on-disc machine and the X-ray diffraction test on the worn surface have been carried out. The results have been shown that the magnitude of residual stress and half-value breadth on the worn surface have a good correlation with wear mode. The difference between before and after test of half-value breadth on worn surface has been shown to be exponential relation with wear rate in the same wear mode.

  • In vehicle's door wiring harness (W/H) system is more toward to arrange a passenger compartment than a hinge and a weatherstrip. An opening/closing member of a vehicle is attached to a vehicle by a hinge in a manner enabling easy opening and closing of the opening/closing member. Such members include doors, such as side-doors and rear doors, and other opening/closing members, such as trunk lids. This article gives some insight into the dimensioning process, with special focus on large deflection analysis of wiring harness(W/H) in vehicle's door structures for durability problem. The Finite elements analysis for door wiring harness(W/H) is used for residual stresses and dimensional stability with bending flexible. Durability test data for slam test specimens were compared with the numerical predicted fatigue life for verification. The final testing of the component combines the effects of these microstructural features with the complex stress state arising from the combined service loading and residual stresses.

  • This paper is a sequel of the previous paperl) on speech digitization and bandwidth compression techniques. Several recently developed vocoding techniques, that is, linear predictive coding (LPC), formant vocoding, residual excited linear prediction (RELP) vocoding, and adaptive predictive coding(APC) are discussed. Throughout the leaper emphasis is placed on the LPC approach that is presently the most promising technique in speech compression. In addition, current problems and possible solutions are discussed.

  • A great number of different pile-driving formulas are widely used to determine the load-carr-ying capacity during driving. However, engineers have been unable to agree on any particular pile.driving formula because the mechanisms of pile driving action which involves many complications such as hammer-pile-soil interaction could not be solved completely in any practical manner. This paper is presented for the purpose of giving field engineers a reliable analytical procedures for the prediction of pile.driving resistance without resort to electronic computers based on the theory of longitudinal wave transmission in conjunction with the wave equation and on the consideration of the effect of residual stresses induced by reversed friction in pile.

  • Fatigue crack propagation behaviors and life prediction for SUS 321 plate and its electron beam weld metal were investigated using compact tension specimens. The larger the stress ratio is, the faster the crack propagates, but the variation of crack propagation rate decreases. The effect of stress ratio is greater in the slow crack propagation area than in the faster one. The crack propagation rate of electron beam weld metal is faster than that of base metal because of hardening, weld defect and residual stress in welding area. The crack propagation rate of transverse weld metal has a lower than that of base metal due to the effect of residual stress, but in the time of passing through welding area, has a higher rate. The crack propagation rate using $\Delta$K$_{eff}$ can be well plotted regardless of stress ratio. The fatigue life prediction method of considering crack closure more exactly predicts fatigue life than conventional one. conventional one.e.

  • The strengthening of a metal matrix composite(MMC) by the shape memory effect(SME) of dispersed TiNi particles was theoretically studied. An analytical model was constructed for the prediction of the average residual stress(<$\delta$>m) on the base of the Eshelby's equivalent inclusion method. The analysis was performed on the TiNi particle/Al metal matrix composites with varying volume fractions and prestrains of the particle. The residual stress caused by the shape memory of predeformed fillers has been predicted to contribute significantly to the strengthening of this composite.

  • For numerical simulation of the deformation and residual stress development in metals during laser peening, the constitutive equations describing material behavior at various strain rates and plastic properties at high strain rate impact conditions are prerequisite. However, these parameters are often unknown for various engineering materials. In this study, the parameters of Johnson-Cook constitutive equation of duplex stainless steel were determined by comparing the residual stress profile predicted by numerical simulation using trial values and the measured residual stress profile with x-ray diffraction.

  • An analysis using FEM simulation was conducted to predict residual stresses and birefringence in simple compressed cylindrical glass as a preliminary part of the optimum design determination of optical lenses. The FEM simulation with the Maxwell viscoelastic constitutive model was used to predict thermal induced residual stresses and birefringence during the compression test considering stress relaxation. Also the linear photoelastic theory was introduced to calculate birefringence from the residual stress state. The simulation results were in good agreement with deformation and birefringence distribution in the existing experimental result.
