  • The spot welding method has been used in the joining of structures, automotive body, railway carriage, aircraft, household electric appliances, precision parts etc., because of brief working, easy automation, available mass production, and convenience. In this paper, the effects of welding conditions on the fatigue life and the prediction of fatigue life based on fracture mechanics theory of spot welded joint were investigated. Fatigue tests were conducted with the tensile-shear specimens welded in the various current using cold rolled steel sheets. Fatigue life of spot welded joint was predicted and compared with experimental results. Using FEM(finite element method), we analysed the distribution of stress and the condition of deformation on the environments of nugget.

  • For the life prediction and fatigue failure prevention of the constant velocity joint, the maximum equivalent stress and its location in depth from the contact area are essential. These values give the fundamental information to determine the depth of the surface hardening treatment at the contact area. Contact stresses are evaluated at the surface and subsurface of the ball groove of the Weiss type constant velocity joint. The maximum contact pressure and the maximum equivalent stress are obtained. The effects of various parameters such as the radius of ball groove, friction coefficient, and residual stress are studied. The maximum equivalent stress and the maximum contact pressure increase as the radius of the ball grove increases. The location of the maximum equivalent stress moves toward surface as the friction coefficient increases. It was also found that the maximum equivalent stress becomes minimum when the compressire residual stress is about 0.16 times of the maximum contact pressure.

  • The radon gas from nature mainly considers a cause of radon problems, and it is closely affect human life cycle. Korean yellow residual soil, Hwangtoh, widely used as a building material, is considered to be one of major sources of indoor radon. However, there have, as yet, been no studies about radon from Hwangtoh in mass market brands. Here, we investigated the indoor radon concentrations and exhalation rates in four Hwangtohs from different brand names and regional features. The Closed Chamber Method (CCM) conducted by a Continuous Radon Monitor (CRM) has been used for the rates of radon exhalation. Based on equations of previous references, the indoor radon concentrations were deducted. As a result, the radon surface exhalation rates resulted in the 1.4208 to 3.0293 Bq·㎡·h-1 range. Significant differences were found among Hwangtohs according to production regions. Materials with higher radon concentration required a longer time to reach a quasi-steady state in a given environment, in other words, the number of half-life cycles increased from a set starting point. The experimentally identified Hwangtohs demonstrated its safety for construction purposes. There exists, so far, a possibility to exert influence radon emanation due to unidentified factors. Therefore, it is necessary to corroborate with more research by increasing the number of Hwangtohs, considering the other references reported high radon exhalation rates. In addition, it is highly recommended that the radon exhalation rates should be measured for all building materials for preventing human health before the material usage.

  • Purpose: This paper introduces the technology of prognostics for Industry 4.0 and presents its application procedure for fitness-for-service assessment of natural gas pipelines according to ISO 13374 framework. Methods: Combining data-driven approach with pipe failure models, we present a hybrid scheme for the gas pipeline prognostics. The probability of pipe failure is obtained by using the PCORRC burst pressure model and First Order Second Moment (FOSM) method. A fuzzy inference system is also employed to accommodate uncertainty due to corrosion growth and defect occurrence. Results: With a modified field dataset, the probability of failure on the pipeline is calculated. Then, its residual useful life (RUL) is predicted according to ISO 16708 standard. As a result, the fitness-for-service of the test pipeline is well-confirmed. Conclusion: The framework described in ISO 13374 is applicable to the RUL prediction and the fitness-for-service assessment for gas pipelines. Therefore, the technology of prognostics is helpful for safe and efficient management of gas pipelines in Industry 4.0.

  • Purpose: There is active research that improves both reliability and fatigue life of structures which widely used in the aerospace fields of defense industry. The effects of three parameters (pressure, peening time, nozzle distance) on Almen intensity and coverage will be investigated by using the experimental and analyzed data. Methods: we employed a Box-Behnken design. Additionally, to verify the validity of the optimal condition obtained from experimental results, metallurgical analyses of the shot-peened aerospace part were conducted with respect to surface morphology, residual stress. Results: Optimal shot peening condition is determined as (distance, pressure, time) by optimizing simultaneously the two responses of intensity and coverage. At the optimal peening condition the prediction interval for Almen intensity is well within the required range. And, the validity of the condition was checked by using the real aerospace aluminum alloy plate. Conclusion: Shot peening introduces significant levels of compressive residual stress and induces improves both reliability and fatigue life of structures.

  • T-joint and hopper knuckle joint models are typical welded joints in ship structure, which are very susceptible to fatigue damage under service condition. Fatigue test and fracture mechanical analysis were performed on these joints to find out characteristics of fatigue behavior. Unified S-N curve was developed from the test results of these two types of joint using hot spot stress concept, and also propagation life was also estimated using Paris' crack propagation law. Residual stress effect on propagation life was considered in calculating propagation life, as was done with thermo-elasto-plastic FE analysis and residual stress intensity factor calculation. Fatigue life of similar kinds of welded joint could be predicted with this unified S-N curve and fracture mechanical analysis technique.

  • Structural integrity assessment of piping components is of paramount important for remaining life prediction, residual strength evaluation and for in-service inspection planning. For accurate prediction of these, a reliable fracture parameter is essential. One of the fracture parameters is stress intensity factor (SIF), which is generally preferred for high strength materials, can be evaluated by using linear elastic fracture mechanics principles. To employ available analytical and numerical procedures for fracture analysis of piping components, it takes considerable amount of time and effort. In view of this, an alternative approach to analytical and finite element analysis, a model based on relevance vector machine (RVM) is developed to predict SIF of part through crack of a piping component under fatigue loading. RVM is based on probabilistic approach and regression and it is established based on Bayesian formulation of a linear model with an appropriate prior that results in a sparse representation. Model for SIF prediction is developed by using MATLAB software wherein 70% of the data has been used for the development of RVM model and rest of the data is used for validation. The predicted SIF is found to be in good agreement with the corresponding analytical solution, and can be used for damage tolerant analysis of structural components.

  • In this study, experiments were tried on the mixed-mode I+II single overloading model which changes the loading mode of overload and fatigue load. Aspects of deformation field in front of the crack which is formed by mixed-mode I+II single overloading were experimentally studied. Then the shape and size of mixed-mode plastic zone were approximately calculated. The propagation behavior of fatigue crack was examined under the test conditions combined by changing the loading mode. The behavior of fatigue cracks were greatly affected by shapes of plastic deformation field and applying mode of fatigue load. Accuracy of prediction and evaluation for fatigue life may be improved by considering all aspects of deformation and behavior of fatigue cracks.

  • In order to predict the accumulated damages by cyclic freeze-thaw, a regression analysis by the Response Surface Method (RSM) is used. RSM has merits when the other probabilistic simulation techniques can not guarantee the convergence of probability of occurrence or when the others can not differentiate the derivative terms of limit state functions, which are composed of random design variables in the model of complex system or the system having higher reliability. For composing limit state function, the important parameters for cyclic freeze-thaw-deterioration of concrete structures, such as water to cement ratio, entrained air pores, and the number of cycles of freezing and thawing, are used as input parameters of RSM. The predicted results of relative dynamic modulus and residual strains after 300 cycles of freeze-thaw for specimens show very good agreements with the experimental results. The RSM result can be used to predict the probability of occurrence for designer specified critical values. Therefore, it is possible to evaluate the life cycle management of concrete structures considering the accumulated damages by the cyclic freeze-thaw by the use of proposed prediction method.

  • Steam turbine rotors are the most critical and highly stressed components of a steam power plant; therefore, the life expectancy of the turbine rotor is an important consideration for the safety of a steam power plant. The objective of this paper is to develop a life estimation program for turbine rotors for all possible operating conditions. For this purpose, finite element analysis was carried out for four normal operating modes (cold, warm, hot and very hot starts) using ABAQUS codes. The results are made into databases to evaluate the life expenditure for an actual operating condition. For any other possible abnormal operating condition, the operating data are transmitted to the server (workstation) through a network to carry out finite element analysis. Damage estimation is carried out by transmitting the finite element analysis results to the personal computer, and then the life expectancy is calculated.
