  • This study aims to determine the sunlight exposure according to depositional environment to improve the accuracy of optically simulated luminescence (OSL) dating. Sufficient sunlight exposure during transportation of sediment is a basic assumption of the OSL dating, and if the process does not occur enough, the results may be overestimated compared to the actual depositional age. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to establish a correction method by determining residual or unbleachable dose after sunlight exposure in the actual deposition process, not in the laboratory measurement. Four samples from two sites were collected according to the depositional environment from rivers and coasts, and various OSL signals, including the size of residual dose, degree of dispersion between grains, and OSL signal sensitivity, were measured. As a result, it was confirmed that sediments formed under temporarily high energy environments, such as floods and surges, had relatively high residual dose or large dispersion of residual dose between particles. In further studies, the OSL signal characteristics of river sediments by flow velocity will be identified and the relationship between energy and OSL signal characteristics will be identified in more detail. Moreover, a method of reconstructing the paleo-environment at the time of deposition for existing sediments will be devised. It is expected to provide important information for the frequency of disaster recurrence and prediction of future climate change.

  • The numerical analysis of energy and material balance, and plant performance has been carried out when applying the heavy residual oil instead of heavy oil to the existing heavy oil power station. The performance analysis model has been constructed for A heavy oil power station in Korea, and the modeling results were compared with the design data in order to ensure the validity of the model, and further compared with the plant operation data. With the heavy residual oil, the simulation gave 315 MW in power output, which is higher than that of the heavy oil combustion, but the plant efficiency turned out to be lower. The sensitivity analysis of heat rate for the changes in cooling water and ambient temperature, flue gas recirculation and power output has provided valuable information for the optimal operation of the power station.

  • Designing of a hierarchical clustering algorithm is one of the numerous approaches to minimize the energy consumption of the Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). In this paper, a homogeneous and randomly deployed sensor nodes is considered. These sensors are energy constrained elements. The nominal selection of the Cluster Head (CH) which falls under the clustering part of the network protocol is studied and compared to Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) protocol. CHs in this proposed process is the function of total remaining energy of each node as well as total average energy of the whole arrangement. The algorithm considers initial energy, optimum value of cluster heads to elect the next group of cluster heads for the network as well as residual energy. Total remaining energy of each node is compared to total average energy of the system and if the result is positive, these nodes are eligible to become CH in the very next round. Analysis and numerical simulations quantify the efficiency and Average Energy Ratio (AER) of the proposed system.

  • In this paper, we propose an adaptive data aggregation and compression scheme for wireless sensor networks with energy-harvesting nodes, which increases the amount of data arrived at the sink node by efficient use of the harvested energy. In energy-harvesting wireless sensor networks, sensor nodes can have more than necessary energy because they harvest energy from environments continuously. In the proposed scheme, when a node judges that there is surplus energy by estimating its residual energy, the node compresses and transmits the aggregated data so far. Conversely, if the residual energy is estimated to be depleted, the node turns off its transceiver and collects only its own sensory data to reduce its energy consumption. As a result, this scheme increases the amount of data collected at the sink node by preventing the blackout of relay nodes and facilitating data transmission. Through simulation, we show that the proposed scheme suppresses the occurrence of blackout nodes and collect the largest amount of data at the sink node compared to previous schemes.

  • In this paper, we present a multi-chain based hierarchical topology control algorithm (MCHTC) for wireless sensor networks. In this algorithm, the topology control process using static clustering is divided into sensing layer that is composed by sensor nodes and multi-hop data forwarding layer that is composed by leader nodes. The communication cost and residual energy of nodes are considered to organize nodes into a chain in each cluster, and leader nodes form a tree topology. Leader nodes are elected based on the residual energy and distance between themselves and the base station. Analysis and simulation results show that MCHTC outperforms LEACH, PEGASIS and IEEPB in terms of network lifetime, energy consumption and network energy balance.

  • When carbon-filled rubber specimens are subjected to cyclic loading, they do not return to their initial state after loading and subsequent unloading, but exhibit a residual strain or permanent deformation. We propose a specific form of the pseudo-elastic energy function to represent cyclic loading for incompressible, isotropic materials with stress softening and residual strain. The essence of the pseudo-elasticity theory is that material behaviour in the primary loading path is described by a common elastic strain energy function, and in unloading, reloading or secondary unloading paths by a different strain energy function. The switch between strain energy functions is controlled by the incorporation of a damage variable into the strain energy function. An extra term is added to describe the permanent deformation. The finite element implementation of the proposed model is presented in this paper. All parameters in the proposed model and elastic law can be easily estimated based on experimental data. The numerical analyses show that the results are in good agreement with experimental data.
