Residual materials such as veterinary drugs, environmental contaminants, and pesticides are affecting food safety. High resolution techniques and quality controls are needed to analyze these materials from part per million to part per trillion quantities in food. In order to achieve quality results, standardized methods and techniques are required. Our laboratories were prepared to obtain a certificate of accreditation for ISO/IEC 17025 in the analytical criteria of animal drugs, dioxins, pesticides, and heavy metals. ISO together with IEC has built a strategic partnership with the World Trade Organization with the common goal of promoting a free and fair global trading system. ISO collaborates with the United Nations Organization and its specialized agencies and commissions, particularly those involved in the harmonization of regulations and public policies including the World Health Organization and CODEX Alimentarius for food safety measurement, management and traceability. Our goal was to have high quality analysts, proper analytical methods, good laboratory facilities, and safety systems within guidelines of ISO/IEC 17025. All staff members took requirement exams. We applied proficiency tests in the analysis of veterinary drugs (nitrofuran metabolites, sulfonamide and tetracyclines), dioxins, organophosphorus pesticides, and heavy metals (Cd, Pb, As) to the Food Analysis Performance Assessment Scheme (FAPAS) at Central Science Laboratory, Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), England. The results were very satisfactory. All documents were prepared, including system management, laboratory management, standard operational procedures for testing, reporting, and more. The criteria encompassed the requirements of ISO/IEC 17025:1999. Finally, the Korea Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (KOLAS) accredited our testing laboratories in accordance with the provisions of Article 23 of the National Standards Act. The accreditation will give us the benefit of becoming a regional reference laboratory in Asia.
This study is conducted to deyelop more conyenient simultaneous determination method by HPLC for mixed antimicrobial agents (sulfamerazine; SMR, sulfamethazine; SMT, sulfamonomethoxine; SMMX, sulfadimethoxine; SDMX, sulfaquinoxaline; SQX, furazolidone; FZ, zolene; ZOL and ethopabate; EPB in muscles of boline, pork and chicken. The drugs were extracted by dichloromethane and water. The extract, after solyent eyaporation, was partitioned in hexane/water and water/dichloromethane. The dichloromethane layer was filtrated with anhydrous $Na_5S0_4\;in\;_3G_3$ glass filter and was eyaporated to dryness. The residue was dissoIYed in mobile phase. The test solution analyzed by HPLC. The chromatograpic conditions were as follows; Column-Spheri 5 RP-8($4.6{\times}220,\;5\;{\mu}$), Wayelength-270 nm, Mobile phase-acetonitrile: 0.005 M oxalic acid (22 : 78). The ayerage recoyeries of drugs from muscles of boline, pork and chicken spiked standard solution were approximately 74~99%, 73~99% and 75~96%, respectiyely. The limits of detection were 5 ppb for SMR, SMT, SMMX, SDMX and EPB, and 8 ppb for SQX, FZ and ZOL.
Objective : The Histoculture Drug Response Assay (HDRA), which measures chemosensitivity using minced tumor tissue on drug-soaked gelfoam, has been expected to overcome the limitations of in vitro chemosensitivity test in part. We analyzed interim results of HDRA in malignant gliomas to see if the test can deserve further clinical trials. Methods : Thirty-three patients with malignant gliomas were operated and their tumor samples were examined for the chemosensitivity to 10 chosen drugs by HDRA. The most sensitive chemotherapy regimen among those pre-established was chosen based on the number of sensitive drugs or total inhibition rate (IR) of the regimen. The response was evaluated by 3 month magnetic resonance image. Results : Among 13 patients who underwent total resection of the tumor, 12 showed no evidence of disease and one patient revealed progression. The response rate in 20 patients with residual tumors was 55% (3 complete and 8 partial responses). HDRA sensitivity at the cut-off value of more than one sensitive drug in the applied regimen showed a sensitivity of 100%, specificity of 60% and predictability of 70%. Another cut-off value of >80% of total IR revealed a sensitivity of 100%, specificity of 69%, and predictability of 80%. For 12 newly diagnosed glioblastoma patients, median progression-free survival of the HDRA sensitive group was 21 months, while that of the non-sensitive group was 6 months ($p$=0.07). Conclusion : HDRA for malignant glioma was inferred as a feasible method to predict the chemotherapy response. We are encouraged to launch phase 2 clinical trial with chemosensitivity on HDRA.

For nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC), surgery is indicated only for stage 3 as a curative measure. Even so, there is a high risk of recurrence following stage 3 lung cancer surgery, a third (33.9%) of patients experienced a cancer recurrence mostly within 2 years after surgery. The median survival time for all stages reaches only 21.9 months. For people undergoing surgery for stage 3A NSCLC, a pre-operative course of (neoadjuvant chemotherapy) can improve survival times, by improving the resectability and lowering the risk of recurrence. Pleural metastases are frequently associated with tumors of the lung and breast. Chest radiographs and computed tomography scans of pleural metastases can present as an effusion or smooth or nodular pleural thickening. In the absence of irregular or nodular pleural thickening, it is difficult to distinguish a benign from a malignant pleural effusion. To treat lung cancer, tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) recently have been used to cope with genetic mutations, apart from cytotoxic anticancer drugs. Compared to cytotoxic drugs, they are effective, have fewer side effects, and are easy to administer. Airman must have no cancer disease to apply for Class-I medical certification. Specifically, if previously operated on cancer, the cancer should not remain in the body at present, and the disease free state should persist at least one year after all kinds of anti-cancer treatments including adjuvant chemotherapy are completed. Here, this case deals with a 41-year-old pilot who has ATP license who had stage 3A NSCLC. The pilot underwent curative lung cancer surgery (lobectomy) a year ago and showed suspicious pleural metastasis at the time of his application for certification and was still using an unauthorized TKI agent alectinib (Alecensa; Roche, Basel, Switzerland).
Bee venom has been used as to prevent and treat bovine mastitis as natural antimicrobial compounds in some dairy cattle farms in Korea. It is needed to determine the residual of bee venom in milks of dairy cattle treated with bee venom. Since bee venom is not approved as a raw material for animal drugs, the preprocessing method to detect bee venom residual in milk and the tolerance limit for its residue has not been established yet in Korea. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop pre-processing method not affecting major component of bee venom for detection of its residue in milks using ultra-high performance liauid chromatography (UHPLC). In addition, bee venom residue was also analyzed in milk samples of dairy cattle treated for mastitis with bee venom using UHPLC with the developed pre-processing method in this study. As a result, melittin, histamin and phospolipase A2, the major components of bee venom, were all detected by UHPLC with the pre-processing method developed in this study. The results of this study suggest that the pre-processing method developed in this study can be useful to detect bee venom residue in dairy cattle milk. We also found that no bee venom residues were detected in milk samples collected from dairy cattle treated with bee venom after 1 and 3 days, respectively.
Pulmonary aspergillosis is relatively rare disease, most commonly presenting pre-existing cavitary disease. This investigation is designed to illustrate the clinical features, preoperative diagnosis and surgical role in the management of this disease. In retrospective review of opeative cases since Jan. 1988, total 16 cases were analysis. Peak incidence of age lies in the 3rd & 5th decade[81.3%].The common presenting symptoms were hemoptysis & blood tinged sputum[90.9%] & all cases had a history of treatment with antituberculous drugs, but the tuberculosis was revealed in only 3 cases in the pathologic studies on specimen after resection. The locations of lesion were upper lobes in 13 cases, lower lobe in 2 cases, and left whole lobe in 1 case. The operative procedures for treatment of aspergillosis were performed. The lobectomy was performed in 7 cases, lobectomy & segmentectomy in 2 cases, lobectomy & decortication in 2 cases, segmentectomy in 3 cases, bilobectomy & segmentectomy in 1 case and pneumonectomy in 1 case. There was one death due to respiratory insufficiency 21 days later, postoperatively, and empyemas & residual space problems were developed in 2 & 3 cases, respectively. The empyemas were treated with open thoracostomy and the dead spaces was filled with granulation tissues within 6 months. During follow up, there was no recurrence. In conclusion, surgical resection is the treatment of choice for symptomatic aspergillosis and needed in asymptomatic patient to prevent possible fatal sequelae in the future.
Pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) have become an environmental havoc in last few decades with reported cases of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs), lethal effects over aquatic organisms, interference in natural decomposition of organic matter, reduced diversity of microbial communities in different environmental compartments, inhibition of growth of microbes resulting in reduced rate of nutrient cycling, hormonal imbalance in exposed organisms etc. Owing to their potential towards bioaccumulation and persistent nature, these compounds have longer residence time and activity in environment. The conventional technologies of wastewater treatment have got poor efficiency towards removal/degradation of PhACs and therefore, modern techniques with efficient, cost-effective and environment-friendly operation need to be explored. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) like Photocatalysis, Fenton oxidation, Ozonation etc. are some of the promising, viable and sustainable options for degradation of PhACs. Although energy/chemical or both are essentially required for AOPs, these methods target complete degradation/mineralization of persistent pollutants resulting in no residual toxicity. Considering the high efficiency towards degradation, non-toxic nature, universal viability and acceptability, AOPs have become a promising option for effective treatment of chemicals with persistent nature.
This study was carried out to explore the most sensitive and useful method for simultaneous determination of five sulfa drugs(sulfamethazine, sulfamerazine, sulfamonomethoxine, sulfadimethoxine, sulfaquinoxaline) in livestock productions(pork muscle, bovine muscle, chicken muscle, milk ) by HPLC with UV detector and reverse phase column. The results obtained were as follows:1. For mobile phase acetonitrile-0.01M ammonium acetate (23:77) showed more applicable sensitivity and retention times than acetonitrile-1% acetic acid(23:77). Thus acetonitrile-0.01M ammonium acetate(23:77) selected and applied to the modification test, from which it was found pH 6.75 was the most adequate. 2. Optimal wavelength of UV for SMT(sulfamethazine), SMR(sulfamerazine), SMM(sulfamonomethoxine), SD(sulfadimethoxine), and SQ(sulfaquinoxaline) were 266, 266, 265, 269 and 250nm, respectively, and that for simultaneous application it was 263nm. 3. The average recovery rate by extractant(chloroform, dichloromethane, chlorform+dich-loromethane) in the classic method was not significantly different(p>0.05) but that by chloroform higher than the others. Thus chloroform was found to be adequate as extractant in this classic method. 4. The average recovery rate was 86.5% by the MSPD(matrix solid phase disperse) method, which was significantly higher than that by the classic method(p<0.05). Also the recovery rates by method were significantly different(p<0.05) in accordance with sample and type of drug. The MSPD method was much superior to classic method on clean-up.
A total of 3,943 samples (beef 698, pork 2,178 and chicken 1,067)were collected from slaughter houses in Daegu from January to December 2006 for analysis of antimicrobial residues. The results were also comparatively analyzed with those carried out from 16 veterinary service laboratories nationwide as a part of national residue program in 2006. The samples from 11 farms (cattle 2, pig 9) were found to exceed the legal limit. Among them 5 were classified as tetracyclines, 3 as $\beta$-lactams, 2 as sulfonamides and 1 as quinolone. Nationally a total of 222 farms (241 cases) were found to violate the residual limits, of which 47.3% were detected by screening test, followed by surveillance (38.3%). Failure to observe withholding periods of antimicrobial drugs after treatment was the most significant cause of the non-compliance.

Variation Analysis (VA) is used to simulate final product variation, taking into consideration part manufacturing and assembly variations. In VA, all the manufacturing and assembly processes are defined at the product design stage. Process Capability Data Bases (PCDB) provide information about measured variation from previous products and processes and allow the designer to apply this to the new product. A new challenge to this traditional approach is posed by the Industry 4.0 (I4.0) revolution, where Smart Manufacturing (SM) is applied. The manufacturing intelligence and adaptability characteristics of SM make present PCDBs obsolete. Current tolerance analysis methods, which are made for discrete assembly products, are also challenged. This paper discusses the differences expected in future factories relevant to VA, and the approaches required to meet this challenge. Current processes are mapped using I4.0 philosophy and gaps are analysed for potential approaches for tolerance analysis tools. Matching points of simulation capability and I4.0 intents are identified as opportunities. Applying conditional variations, incorporating levels of adjustability, and the un-suitability of present Monte Carlo simulation due to changed mass production characteristics, are considered as major challenges. Opportunities including predicting residual stresses in the final product and linking them to product deterioration, calculating non-dimensional performances and extending simulations for process manufactured products, such as drugs, food products etc. are additional winning aspects for next generation VA tools.
