  • So far, studies on the settlement of breakwater have mainly been conducted through numerical model tests focusing on an analysis or through the laboratory wave tank tests using a scaled model. There has not been a study on the settlement that is measured in an actual breakwater structure. This study analyzed the data of settlement that has been measured in an actual caisson breakwater for a long time and the characteristics and causes of wave-induced settlement in the caisson (including beneath ground), based on qualitative aspect, were examined. The analysis revealed that wave clearly has an effect on the settlement in caisson, especially in the condition of high wave such as typhoon. Caisson settlement is caused by the liquefaction of ground, which is due to the increase of excess pore pressure, the combination of oscillatory excess pore pressure and residual excess pore water pressure, and the solidification process of ground due to dissipation of the accumulated excess pore pressure. The behavior of excess pore pressure in the ground beneath the caisson is entirely governed by the behavior of the caisson. Ground that has gone through solidification is not likely to go through liquefaction in a similar or a smaller wave condition and consequently, the possibility of settlement is reduced.

  • The transfer pattern of chlorpyrifos present in soil to cucumber plants were assessed and reported with plant growth, concentration dependency, and duration. Cucumber seedlings cultivated in a growth chamber for 30 days and a greenhouse for 120 days. Weight and length of cucumbers cultivated in the chamber increased with the increasing time, while the uptake of chlorpyrifos by cucumber increased a period from 0 to 15 days and decreased after 15 days. Uptake rates of chlorpyrifos into a cucumber plant were 1.0~1.3% to initial amounts treated with 20 and 40 mg/kg to soil. Most chlorpyrifos residues were detected in root, followed by stem and leaf. Results of the greenhouse test showed that chlorpyrifos amounts in cucumber fruits were present less than LOQ (0.02 mg/kg), and chlorpyrifos was mainly found in the root of the cucumber plant. Chlorpyrifos absorbed in a cucumber under greenhouse condition was smaller than that in chamber condition as 0.03~0.04%. Degradation patterns of chlorpyrifos in soils were similar during indoor and outdoor tests with half-lives of 25.8~73.0 days. These results may be useful for establishing the management strategy of residual pesticides in soil environment.

  • In case of the seabed around and under gravity structures such as submerged breakwater is exposed to a large wave action long period, the excess pore pressure will be generated significantly due to pore volume change associated with rearrangement soil grains. This effect will lead a seabed liquefaction around and under structures as a result from decrease in the effective stress. Under the seabed liquefaction occurred and developed, the possibility of structure failure will be increased eventually. Lee et al.(2016) studied for regular waves, and this study considered for irregular waves with the same numerical analysis method used for regular waves. Under the condition of the irregular wave field, the time and spatial series of the deformation of submerged breakwater, the pore water pressure (oscillatory and residual components) and pore water pressure ratio in the seabed were estimated and their results were compared with those of the regular wave field to evaluate the liquefaction potential on the seabed quantitatively. Although present results are based on a limited number of numerical simulations, one of the study's most important findings is that a more safe design can be obtainable when analyzing case with a regular wave condition corresponding to a significant wave of irregular wave.

  • The microstructure and electrical characteristics of A ∼ C's ZnO varistors fabricated according to variable sintering condition, which sintering temperature was 1130 $^{\circ}C$ and speeds of pusher were A: 2 mm/min, B: 4 mm/min, C: 6 mm/min, respectively, were investigated. The experimental results obtained from this study were summarized as follows: The sintering density of A ∼C's ZnO varistors sintered at 1130 $^{\circ}C$ were decreased by sintering keep time to shorten, such as A: 9hour, B: 4.5hour and C: 3hour. A's ZnO varistor exhibited good densification nearly 98 % of theory density. In the microstructure, A∼C's ZnO varistors fabricated variable sintering condition was consisted of ZnO grain(ZnO), spinel phase(Z $n_{2.33}$S $b_{0.67}$ $O_4$), Bi-rich phasc(B $i_2$ $O_3$), wholly. Varistor voltage of A∼C's ZnO varistors sintered at 1130 $^{\circ}C$ increased in order A

  • Background: The purpose of this study is to introduce our modified disc plication technique using MITEK mini anchors and to evaluate the clinical outcome for patients with internal derangement (ID) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Patients and methods: We evaluated 65 joints in 46 patients, comprised 32 women and 14 men, who first visited the Asan Medical Center from December 2012 to December 2016. The age of the patients ranged from 14 to 79 years, with a mean age of 36.6 years. The patients presented with joint problems including pain, joint noise, and mouth opening limitation (MOL). Patients who met our inclusion criteria underwent unilateral or bilateral disc repositioning surgery with our minimally invasive disc plication technique using MITEK mini anchors and No. 2-0 Ethibond® braided polyester sutures. The variables taken into account in this study were the range of maximum mouth opening (MMO), painful symptoms (evaluated with the visual analog scale, VAS), and the type of noise (click, popping, crepitus) in the TMJ. Results: Preoperative examination revealed painful symptoms in 50.7% (n = 35) of the operated joints (n = 69) and the presence of clicks in 56.5% (n = 39). Postoperative examination revealed that 4.3% (n = 3) of the operated joints had painful symptoms with lower intensity than that in the preoperative condition. Additionally, 17.4% (n = 12) had residual noise in the TMJ, among which two were clicking and the other 10 had mild crepitus. The intensity of the postoperative residual noise was significantly decreased in all cases compared to that in the preoperative condition. Among patients with MOL below 38 mm (n = 18), the mean MMO was 31.4 mm preoperatively and 44.2 mm at 6 months postoperatively, with a mean increase of 13.8 mm. A barely visible scar at the operation site was noted during the postoperative observation period, with no significant complications such as facial palsy or permanent occlusal disharmony. Conclusion: Subjective symptoms in all patients improved following the surgery. TMJ disc plication using MITEK mini anchors with our minimally invasive approach may be a feasible and effective surgical option for treating TMJ ID patients who are not responsive to conservative treatment.

  • When reinforced concrete structures are exposed to fire, their mechanical properties such as compressive strength, elasticity coefficient and rebar yield strength, are degraded. Therefore, the structure's damage assessment is essential in determining whether to dismantle or augment the structure after a fire. In this study, the confinement effect of lateral reinforcement of RC column according to the numbers of fire exposure face and stirrup was verified by fire resistant test with the heating temperatures of $400^{\circ}C$, $600^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$. The test results showed that the peak stress decreases and peak strain increases as the temperature is getting higher, also transverse ties are helpful in improving the compressive resistance of concrete subjected to high temperature. Based on the results of this study, the residual stress of confined concrete under thermal damage is higher at the condition of more lateral reinforcement ratio and less fire exposure faces. The decreasing ratio of elastic modulus of more confined and less exposure faces from the relationship of load and displacement was also smaller than that of opposite conditions.

  • Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH) is a pathological condition commonly occurring during the growth phase of infants. It acts as one of the factors that can disrupt an infant's growth and trigger potential complications. Therefore, it is critically important to detect and treat this condition early. The traditional diagnostic methods for DDH involve palpation techniques and diagnosis methods based on the detection of keypoints in the hip joint using X-ray or ultrasound imaging. However, there exist limitations in objectivity and productivity during keypoint detection in the hip joint. This study proposes a deep learning model-based keypoint detection method using X-ray and ultrasound imaging and analyzes the performance of keypoint detection using various deep learning models. Additionally, the study introduces and evaluates various data augmentation techniques to compensate the lack of medical data. This research demonstrated the highest keypoint detection performance when applying the residual network 152 (ResNet152) model with simple & complex augmentation techniques, with average Object Keypoint Similarity (OKS) of approximately 95.33 % and 81.21 % in X-ray and ultrasound images, respectively. These results demonstrate that the application of deep learning models to ultrasound and X-ray images to detect the keypoints in the hip joint could enhance the objectivity and productivity in DDH diagnosis.

  • This study presents a possibility of intensification of fine dust mass concentration due to the complex urban structure using data mining technique and clustering analysis. The data mining technique showed no significant correlation between fine dust concentration and regional-use public urban data over Seoul. However, clustering analysis based on nationwide-use public data showed that building heights (floors) have a strong correlation particularly with PM10. The modeling analyses using the single canopy model and the micro-atmospheric modeling program (ENVI-Met. 4) conducted that the controlled atmospheric convection in urban area leaded to the congested flow pattern depending on the building along the distribution and height. The complex structure of urban building controls convective activity resulted in stagnation condition and fine dust increase near the surface. Consequently, the residual effect through the changes in the thermal environment caused by the shape and structure of the urban buildings must be considered in the fine dust distribution. It is notable that the atmospheric congestion may be misidentified as an important implications for providing information about the residual probability of fine dust mass concentration in the complex urban area.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the force degradation rate of synthetic elastomeric chains during space closing phase of orthodontic treatment. Two kinds of synthetic elastomeric chains(RMO, 3M) were selected which were commonly used In clinics. All of the samples were extended and tested for 4 weeks under the simulated intraoral condition. The results can be summarized as follows : 1. Time related residual force showed typical logarithm function. Residual force after 4 weeks was $41.2\~64.6\%$ of original force, and difference between two kinds of elastomeric chain existed. 2. Elastic force decreased greatly during first 10 minutes, so $20\~25\%$ of original force disappeared. After that, this decreasing tendency was diminished significantly, average rate of elastic force after 1 week to 4 weeks were $1.5\%$ demonstrating rather constant force. 3. Even though the same brand of elastomeric chiain was used, as extension rate of elastomeric chain increased, force degradation rate increased by decreasing of residual force.

  • The Shihung mine was restored in the early 90's after abandonment for 20 yews since 1973. Although disposed mine tailings were removed and the site was replaced by an incineration plant, still some residual mine tailings remain in the places including the old mine tailing ditposal area and the adjacent agricultural area. These residual mine tailings are prone to impose an adverse impact on the soil and groundwater and needs investigation for the potential contamination. Mine tailing samples were collected from the old tailing disposal area and the iii paddy. The porewater from the mine tailing were extracted and analysed to investigate chemical changes along the reaction path. Batch leaching tests were also carried out in the laboratory to find any supporting evidence found in the field analysis. Evidence of elemental leaching was confirmed both by the mine tailing and the porewater chemistry in them. The element concentrations of Cu, Cd, Pb, Zn in the porewater exceed the standard for drinking water of Korean government and US EPA. Leaching of heavy metals from the mine tailing seem to be responsible for the contamination. In batch leaching test. heavy metals were either continuous1y released or declined rapidly. Combining the information with porewater variation with depths and the geochemical meodeling results, most of elements are controlled by dissolution and/or precipitation processes, with some solubility controlling solid phases (Cu, Pb, Fe and Zn). Batch leaching test conducted at fixed pH 4 showed much higher releases for the heavy metals up to 400 times (Zn) and this area is becoming more vulnerable to soil and groundwater pollution as precipitation pH shifts to acidic condition.
