  • This paper purports to analyze the economic rationale of compensating balance requirements and its impact on money supply. This practice has recently been severely criticized for artificially increasing the money supply and, therefore, limiting the nation's aggregate lending policy under the tight constraint of the given money supply target. A review of the existing literature implies that compensating balance requirements is a banking practice which leads to corrections in the distortion of financial resource allocation due to the imperfection of financial market stemming from asymmetric information and/or financial regulations on deposit and lending rates. Therefore, the economic rationale of this practice is deemed to improve the efficiency of financial resource allocation. On the other hand, the macroeconomic impact of compensating balance requirements on the money supply depends on the impact on the money multiplier, which in turn depends on the desired ratio of deposit that people wish to maintain on the money borrowed from the banking system, and on the desired reserve ratio that the banking system would like to hold for deposit withdrawal. If the compensating balance requirements could increase the desired ratio of deposit to borrowing (bank lending), it will increase the available amount of total reserve within the banking system and, in turn, the money multiplier. However, this channel has not been fully analyzed in the literature, and the direction of the effect is ambiguous. If the practice could reduce the turn-over rate of deposit and, thereby, reduce the desired reserve ratio of the banking system, then it will also increase the money multiplier. While this channel operates unambiguously toward increasing the money multiplier, this effect will be limited by the extent that the banking system holds the excess reserve over the required reserve because the excess reserve will set the maximum amount for the desired reserve to fall. This paper tries to determine the effect on the money supply by empirically estimating the multiplier and the desired ratio of deposit to lending equations as functions of the ratio of compensating balance to the related lending, which is not observable and is estimated for the regression purpose. The results suggest that the effect of compensating balance requirements on the money supply in Korea does not exist or is very tenuous even if it could operate. Therefore, this paper concludes that the well publicized policy of cross cancelling the compensating balance and the related lending will not be effective at controlling the money supply and increasing the amount of loans without expanding the money supply.

  • Positron emission tomography (PET) serves as a gold standard for noninvasive in vivo measurement of myocardial blood flow (MBF) and coronary flow reserve (CFR). CFR can be defined as the ratio of maximally vasodilated MBF over its basal flow. It is an important parameter for the evaluation of functional severity of coronary stenosis and prognositification in various diseases such as dilated cardiomyopathy. $^{13}NH_3,\;H_2^{15}O,\;^{82}Rb$ are widely used radiopharmaceuticals for measuring MBF and CFR, This review introduces imaging techniques and its clinical utility. Cardiac application or PET and PET/CT is expected to be increased in near future.

  • This paper proposes Power System Health Index(PSHI) newly. The paper describes several kind of power system health indices based on two main categories, which are adequacy and security. In adequacy, four kinds of health indices of Frequency, Voltage, Reserve(Operating Reserve Power and Frequency Regulation Reserve Power) and Overload of lines and transformers are proposed. In security, four kinds of health indices of Voltage(154kV, 345kV and 765kV), Overload of lines and transformers, Power flow constraint among areas and SPS are proposed. All indices are mapped with three domains, which are indicated as Health, Margin and Risk, defined with expert interview. While domains of health, margin and risk is defined similar with the conventional well being analysis of power system. The criterion of the domains is proposed using an interview with expert operators and practical reliability codes in Korea. The several kinds of health index functions, which are linear ratio, piecewise linear ration and reverse ratio function etc. are developed in this paper. It will be expected that the developed health indices can help operators to control power system more successfully and also prevent power system from accident as like as black out in future because operator can make a decision immediately based on more easily visual information of system conditions from too much indices acquisition of complex power system.

  • This study illustrated the process of bar structure and vegetation coverage to understand historical changes of riverbed and suppose adaptive management in Tan-chun ecological landscape reserve. The study site that lower reach of the Tan-chun are known as habitats of migratory bird and aquatic species with dynamic riverbed. Aerial photos from 2006 to 2016 and surveyed vegetation data in 2006 and 2016 were used by analysis of landscape changes and comparison of vegetation coverage. Study area is classified into 3 sites (A: straight site, B: meandering site, C: meandering and junction with Yangjae-cheon). The result showed that bar area of A and C sites gradually increased, B site decreased during 10 years. Also, ratio of bar area to vegetation coverage and level of vegetation coverage increased in all sites during 10 years. All sites seem to have experienced the terrestrialization with time. On the other hand, ratio of annual vegetation increased and ratio of perennial vegetation decreased in C site in 2016 compare to 2006. Because area of Japanese Hops (Humulus japonicas) as one type of annual vegetation increased, other vegetation could not grow up by its powerful expandability. It is time to make active adaptive management based on not only continuos monitoring but also revaluation of river conditions in order to enhance habitat quality and quantity in Tan-chun ecological landscape reserve.

  • We examined refractive error, the corrected visual acuity, phoria and fusional reserve of 114 healthy myopes and hyperopia who had no strabismus, no ocular and physical diseases. We evaluated the occurrence of asthenopia according to phoria and fusional reserve. 41 out of 114 subjects which exophoria was 69% and esophoria was 5.5%, orthophoria was 26% made a complaint against asthenopia. The subjects who had exophoria of $0-6{\Delta}$ in the range of normal state was 61.4%, while the subjects who had exophoria of $7{\Delta}$ or more in the range of abnormal state was 38.6%. Reducing fusional reserve was associated with increasing phoria. The fusional reserve twice or more than phoria were 27.2%, and twice or under were 72.8%. Futhermore, AC/A ratio for heterophoria was found from 1.0 to 12.6 and its relationship to asthenopia of phoria could not be determined.

  • Recently, energy issues such as massive blackout due to increase in power consumption have been emerged, and it is necessary to improve the accuracy of prediction of power consumption as a solution for these problems. In this study, we investigate the difference between the actual power consumption and the predicted power consumption through the deep learning- based power consumption forecasting experiment, and the possibility of adjusting the power reserve ratio. In this paper, the prediction of the power consumption based on the deep learning can be used as a basis to reduce the power reserve ratio so as not to excessively produce extra power. The deep learning method used in this paper uses a learning model of long-short-term-memory (LSTM) structure that processes time series data. In the computer simulation, the generated power consumption data was learned, and the power consumption was predicted based on the learned model. We calculate the error between the actual and predicted power consumption amount, resulting in an error rate of 21.37%. Considering the recent power reserve ratio of 45.9%, it is possible to reduce the reserve ratio by 20% when applying the power consumption prediction algorithm proposed in this study.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the property of heterophoria and fusional reserve in Adults in Jeon-buk Area. We examined the corrected visual acuity, corrected refractive error, heterophoria and fusional reserve of 116 healthy myopes aged from 20 to 44 old who had no strabismus no ocular and phyisical diseases. Using Von Graefe test of horizontal heterophoria Measurement, we measured orthophoria(26.7%), exophoria(52.5%) and esophoria(20.7%) for at near distance. The subjects who had exophoria of 0-6${\Delta}$ in the range of normal state was 38.8%, while the subjects who had exophoria in the range of abnormal state was 61.2%. Reducing fusional reserve was associated with increasing phoria. We found a relationship between asthenopia and fusional reserve of heterophoria and considered that fusional reserve must be examined when we preserve for a patient with heterophoria. Furthermore, Gradient method AC/A ratio was found 4.03 and its relationship to refractive error could not be determined.

  • Innumerable microgrids would be operated independently by individual operators in a future smart grid. This kind of decentralized power system requires entirely different operation scheme in the actual power system and electricity market operation. Especially, frequency regulation is very important for successive energy trade in this multi-microgrid circumstance. This paper presents an optimal energy and reserve market participation strategy and operation strategy of energy storage system (ESS) by a microgrid operator (MGO). For definite evaluation of the proposed strategy, we postulate that the MGO should participate in the Power Exchange for Frequency Control (PXFC) market, which was devised by Maria Ilic and her coworkers and is suitable to the decentralized operation circumstances. In particular, optimal reserve capacity of the frequency control market and optimal market participation ratio of ESS between frequency control market and energy market are derived theoretically and evaluated by simulations utilizing Nordic Pool Elspot price data.

  • Carotid-artery stenosis may reduce cerebral perfusion, and affect cerebral neuronal activities. We examined the question of whether the recovery of cerebral-perfusion reserve after carotid-artery stenting (CAS) can affect the EEG power-spectrum. Nineteen candidates for CAS were initially recruited. Subtraction imaging of single photon emissary computerized tomography (SPECT) and an electroencephalogram (EEG) were taken twice, before and 1 month after CAS. At each time point, the EEGs were recorded before and after injection of acetazolamide (pre-ACZ EEG and post-ACZ EEG). Finally, 7 patients were enrolled after exclusion of incomplete studies. We obtained the spectral ratio (SR) of each hemisphere. SR was defined as the divided value of the power-spectrum sum of fast activities by that of slow activities. The power-spectrum values between hemispheres were compared using the inter-hemispheric index of spectral ratio (IHISR), and we examined the correlation between the power-spectrum and the cerebral-perfusion reserve. Cerebral-perfusion reserve improved after CAS on the stent side in 6 of 7 patients. In 3 patients with unilateral carotid-artery stenosis, CAS increased SR on the pre-ACZ EEGs, and IHISR on the post-ACZ EEGs. The increases of SR and IHISR were concordant with the increment of cerebral-perfusion reserve. In contrast, the results in the other patients with bilateral stenosis showed complex patterns. The SR of pre-ACZ EEGs and IHISR of post-ACZ EEGs may be useful electrophysiological markers for the blood-flow reserve after CAS in patients with unilateral carotid-artery stenosis, but not in those with bilateral stenosis.

  • Nuclear power generation is increasing domestic power supply ratio by lower CO2 emission and fuel prices. Currently, nuclear power generator has been operated with maximum power output. Therefore, nuclear power generator could be no effect to managing the reactive power reserve on power system. The reactive power reserve is calculated to the difference between maximum facility and operation generation capacity of the power system. This paper was proposed that load following of nuclear power is control by using 15-bus power system model. In the simulation result, power system is shown to safety state by operating load following of nuclear power generator. This method has be improved the supplied reliability through economic and efficient operation.
