  • The 'Research report on the Korean architecture(韓國建築調査報告)' is the first investigation and research of the Korean architecture by Japanese researcher. This paper is about Sekino Tadashi's viewpoints of Korean architecture in the 'Research report on Korean architecture'. And the findings are as follows. The investigation of the Korean architecture by Sekino Tadashi was carried out in the concern about the relation between Japanese architecture and Asian architecture, shortly after the research of the history of Japanese architecture started. And following investigation and research about Korean architecture by Sekino Tadashi was mainly focusing on the ancient architecture which he estimated highly in the 'Research report on the Korean architecture'. When he observed each architecture himself, he estimated highly the ancient Korean architecture, of course. And also he estimated highly many architecture of the Koryo and the Chosun period. However, when he estimated Korean architecture as a whole, he had been strongly influenced in the prejudice about Korea in Japan of those days. But this is not originate in his individuality. History research reflects the historical situation that the researcher was placed. The viewpoints of Korean architecture in the 'Research report on the Korean architecture' was produced by the Korean recognition in Japan of those days.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to provide understandings about EBD research trends in Korean healthcare architecture research. Method: The systematic literature review was conducted, while comparing the characteristics of research papers in Journal of Korea Institute of Healthcare Architecture with EBD related research papers among them. Results: It is found that the difference of research method utilized between healthcare research in general and EBD research. Specifically, a research method most utilized in general is a field study. In EBD research, however, literature review is most frequently used. Implications: This study can be used as a reference point for further development of EBD research in Korean healthcare architecture. In addition, research results can be used as a communication tool with healthcare specialists such as doctors and consultants in a healthcare project team. Thus, this study is anticipated to play a preliminary role for the development of healthcare architecture design in Korea.

  • The purpose of this research is an analysis of research trends concerning history of landscape architecture found in the Journal of Korean Institute of Landscape Architecture (KILA). To do this, I reviewed the 905 articles from the journal from 1973 to 2003, from Which 104 journals were selected. In the articles, there were numerous studies on Oriental history and there was a lack of studies on Western history. Many of the oriental landscape history articles featured the landscape architecture history of the Korean Choseon Dynasty. There was much difference between the 1980s and 1990s. The topics of the 1980s were usually royal palaces, villages and temples, whereas those of 1990s expanded to include confucian memorial halls, walled towns and historical landscape areas. Also the topics of the 1990s included Japanese, Chinese ,md Western landscape architecture. Nevertheless, we had almost no focus on preservation and inheritance of historical cultural landscape sites. To solve this problem, we can find our motivation in the studies in history of landscape architecture.

  • special subjects, from basic data-building to applied design itself, and from how-why studies to theory building research. It seems that the research concerns are mainly the explanation of the processes of design projects rather than the application and expression of design theory and conceptual work itself. The articles do not show a clear trend or design concerns that would lead landscape architecture firms or its market. A few articles deal with aesthetical theory and with design criticism that could be one of landscape design's fundamental theories. It is not enough to regard the Journal of the Korean Institute of Landscape Architecture as the main stream of contemporary Korean landscape design trends. More research in the field of landscape design need to focus on pre-research work rather than on post-work reports. More research work in the field of landscape aesthetics is also required. The format of the journal needs to be reformed to include more design research papers that are of a free-presentation style in nature.

  • The purpose of this research was to discuss pending taste of the Journal of the Korean Institute of Landscape Architecture(KILA). Two subjects were discussed; one was the role of KILA as a supporter of landscape research, and the other was the role of KILA as a safeguard for its members. The results of this research were as follows. To support landscape research, several proposals were suggested. It is necessary for the development of landscape architecture for us to share some pages of our journal for essays which deal with current landscape issues, in order to introduce advanced overseas landscape trends or landscape techniques. For the field of landscape construction and landscape management, it is necessary to prepare a column of technical notes which introduce new techniques of landscape construction and management. For the field of landscape design, a larger seperate volume must be prepared with color printing. It is an efficient way to cooperate with other institutions that have the same member as KILA. To safeguard KILA members, it is important to maintain our status as a registered journal of Korea Research Foundation and to publish an international journal. For prospective young researchers, publication of an english journal is under consultation with the Japanese Institution of Landscape Architecture and the Chinese Institution of Landscape Architecture. The publication of an international land-scape journal to be recorded in the ISI journal in the near future will promote the research abilities of KILA members.

A Critical Understanding of 'Juchegeonchuk' in North Korea in the Late 20th Century: Focused on The Art of Architecture (20세기 후반 북한의 '주체건축'에 대한 비평적 연구 - 『건축예술론』을 중심으로 -)

  • This research scrutinizes the concept of 'Juchegeonchuk' (self-reliance ideology in architecture), which is a key concept to understand the architecture and urbanism of North Korea in the 1970's and 80's. In the 1970's and 80's, Kim Jong-il began to appear in politics in earnest after Kim Il-sung appointed Kim Jong-il as Kim Il-sung's successor to the next generation. There have been many previous studies about 'Juchesasang' (self-reliance ideology) in various fields, except in architecture. On the other hand, the in-depth research into Juchegeonchuk, which was a method to strengthen Juchesasang, was not good enough in architecture. In this sense, this research investigates the concept of Juchegeonchuk based on the Geonchugyesullon (The Art of Architecture), which embodied the thought of architecture and culture of Kim Jong-il published in 1992. This research scrutinizes the idea of Juchegeonchuk on The Art of Architecture, and its representation in architecture and urbanism in Pyeongyang based on the idea of Juchegeonchuk. It enables to find a new interpretation of North Korea's architecture introduced by Kim, Jong-il in the late 20th century.

  • This study aims to review the research trends of landscape construction and materials, and to discover the research characteristics in Korea. The research scope was limited to the 905 articles lin the Journal of Korean Institute of Landscape Architecture between 1973 and 2003. The results of the research were as follows. The number of articles concerning landscape materials and construction were few(5.8%), compared to other research fields. The articles were categorized by sequences of the structures, the construction and management, the development of engineering and the development of materials. The articles concerning construction and construction management were categorized into 3 types of quality management; construction and materials, the cost estimation and the work classification and processes. The soils was studied together with plants suited to such soil characteristics as layer, structure, and composition.

  • This study is concerned with the survey methods to approach a research into ‘local architecture’ in korea. Local materials for architecture can be classified into local buildings, local documents, local conditions. To perform the survey research into local architecture effectively, it demands a reasonable survey methods depending on the characteristics of materials for architecture, and we have to give careful consideration to the survey process, the materials collecting, the materials noting and reporting. The typical survey methods of local are presented in this article.

  • Oceanic architecture means architectural space created by directly or indirectly using the features of the ocean in the design. A range of marine structure for residential, leisure, cultural, and industrial uses has been and will be created by adopting these features in spatial composition, program, function, and form. This is a clearly distinct category of architecture which can produce unique and creative environments for man's living. Here this kind of architecture is called oceanic architecture. Nowadays the demand for ocean space is increasing and in the near future the law of oceanic architecture will be established by the government. Even with the present trend in design practice, few academic researches on the new architecture have been executed from an architectural design viewpoint. Accordingly, this study aims to examine the design aspects of oceanic architecture. In this paper firstly the design characteristics and contents of oceanic architecture are dealt. And then the concept architecture is defined on the basis of design characteristics.
