  • Organizations worldwide make efforts to develop their management systems for business functions. The representatives of management systems include quality management system (QMS), environmental management system (EMS) and occupational health and safety management system (OHSMS). Implementing EMS and/or OHSMS in addition to QMS often requires integration of separate management systems in alignment with the organization's strategies and goals. Through the questionnaire survey on Korean marine equipment enterprises, this paper deals with the operational practices of management systems and analyzes perceptions about integrated management system (IMS). We found out the degree of perception is not sufficient enough to prepare background for IMS in Korean marine equipment enterprises. The results contribute to well understanding and successfully implementing IMS.

  • Customers are now demanding ever better service from customer service representatives (CSRs) to create superior customer service. Accordingly, CSRs are required to have more specialized knowledge and abilities of customer service. This study examines the roles of accumulated customer knowledge in electronic knowledge repositories (EKRs), which a firm has developed for customer service over time to enhance CSRs' work capabilities and work performance, in the context of call centers. To test the proposed research model and hypotheses, we conducted LISREL analysis using 261 responses collected on CSRs working for inbound call centers. The key results are as follows. First, accumulated customer knowledge in EKRs enhances CSRs' knowledge utilization and service expertise during the customer contact. Second, CSRs' knowledge utilization reinforces service expertise. Finally, service quality depends on CSRs' knowledge utilization and service expertise, but it is not directly related to accumulated customer knowledge. Overall, the findings suggest that accumulated customer knowledge in EKRs enhances CSRs' knowledge utilization and service expertise, and thereby leading to superior service quality.

  • The results of this theis are as follows. As regards the chronological transformation of the royal court dancing which is characterized by the variousness and colorfulness of the old-fashioned dancing suit, in the pre-dynasty of triple alliance among Shinla, Bakjae, and Goguryeo, the traditional ritual stood on ceremony through the ceremonial dancing in support of a religional rite. But while the Shinla, Bakjae, and GoGuRyeo dynasty began to excercise the systematic royal control over people, each royal court employed the professional ritual dancers; and it encouraged them to dance on the variety of ceremony on behalf of a rite and celebration. Of course, except for that of Shinla dynasty, it is not so easy to find out the historical record for the evidence which can back up these facts. As representatives of a ritual dancing, the religional ceremony of Shinla dynasty brought about the orientation of GumGee-Mu, MooAe-Mu, Saseon-Mu, Seonyu-Ak, and Cheoyong-Mu.

  • The government policy on the occupational safety and health is the fundamental factor for the effectiveness and efficiency of the accident prevention efforts. However this point of view is comparatively neglected and most of policy in occupational safety and health has not been successful enough in Korea. Thus, this study aims to reduce the accidents at work in Korea through the improvement of the decision-making process on the occupational safety and health policy in Korea. The recommendations are derived from the comparison between the policy decision-making organization and process of Korea and those of other major countries. Capitulated recommendations are: more involvement of professional individuals in the process of policy decision-making; intensive utilization of research institutes; and more openness of the process of policy decision-making to the stakeholders ie, the representatives of employees and employers.

  • This research examines the importance of IT training/education, present situation and possible suggestion for the successful training/education. The research method adopts a comparative analytical approach based on questionnaire survey responses from three work groups - managers, employees, and union representatives - drawn from five sample Korean banks. The evidence indicates that all three groups agree that IT improves banking efficiency and reduces job repetitiveness, but their job satisfaction level with IT-based work is surprisingly very low. The main reasons are mainly lack of training/education and poor user manuals. Also the research shows that most respondents would like to get further training/education to more adequately fit them for their jobs. Those from banks which invested in continuing training/education revealed more positive work attitudes and higher job satisfaction.

  • We provide an useful method to design codebooks with better performance than conventional methods. In the proposed method, new codevectors obtained from learning iterations are not the centroid vectors which are the representatives of partitions, but the vectors manipulated by the distance between new codevectors and old codevectors in the early stages of learning iteration. Experimental results show that the codevectors obtained by the proposed method converge to a locally better optimal codebook.

  • A new approach to obtain broadly cross-reactive antisera against important yeast pathogens by intensive hyperimmunization with polysaccharide-protein conjugates is described here. Surface mannan of Candida albicans and capsular galactoglucoxylomannan of Cryptococcus laurentii were isolated and chemically linked to human serum albumin. Antisera elicited by a 7-week vigorous immunization of rabbits with the conjugates showed effective cross-reactive growth inhibition of different representatives of Candida spp. as well as Cryptococcus spp. IgG antibodies are evidenced as the effective component of the antisera.

  • This paper has derived some problems relating to the use of letters of intent which are common occurrence in the international contracts after considering its nature and legal issues. As reviewed before, some problems may occur when a party has documented a stage in the negotiations by letters of intent. Such documents may well explicitly spell out if, and to what extent, the parties should be bound by what they have already agreed or to carry on negotiations in order to reach the final contract. But if the documents are silent, some problems would arise. Contracting parties are therefore well advised to spell out if, and to what extent, they should be bound by such preliminary agreements. Here again, it might be prudent to explicitly set forth that the parties should not be bound until there is a final written contract signed by authorized representatives of the parties but that they shall abstain from such measures which may defeat their stated objective to reach final agreement, for example, by diminishing the value of performance under the contemplated contract.

  • The Governing Council of UNIDROIT at its 90th session adopted on 10 May 2011 the third edition of the Principles of International Commercial Contracts("UNIDROIT Principles 2010"). The UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts first published in 1994 and in a second edition in 2004, are taken by legislators worldwide as a model for contract law reform and increasingly used in international contracting and arbitration practice, as well as by the courts to interpret and supplement the applicable domestic law. The UNIDROIT Principles are particularly useful to parties when negotiating and drafting international contracts. The new edition of the Principles, UNIDROIT Principles 2010, prepared by a group of experts from all over the world including representatives of numerous international organizations and arbitration centers. The UNIDROIT Principles 2010 contain new provisions on restitution in case of failed contracts, illegality, conditions, and plurality of obligors and obligees, while with respect to the text of the 2004 edition the only significant changes made relate to the Comments to Article 1.4.

  • This study was conducted to provide a foundation for housewife-consumer education programs appropriate in the information society. For this purpose, the authors reviewed existing literature, analysed consumer counseling cases, and conducted focus group interviews. The need for housewife-consumer education was illustrated, and desirable educational contents and methods were proposed. The existing housewife-consumer education programs did not work effectively because the contents were too general, and mostly structured with non-interactive one-way lectures. More effective programs should be designed to accomodate the educational purpose and contents which fitted with the specific needs of housewives as the representatives of the family consumer units. It should also take the family life cycle stages into consideration. The education programs would work better when they were oriented more toward actively participating, locally-based spontaneous small-groups.
