This study investigated the treatment of liquid waste containing highly concentrated iron(III)-ethylenediaminetetraaceticacid (Fe(III)-EDTA) of 70,000 mg/L by an underwater electrical discharge process using low voltage and high current. When AC voltage is applied to the discharging electrode with the other electrode grounded, the temperature of the liquid waste around the discharging electrode rapidly increases, and at the same time, hydrogen and oxygen gases are formed at the electrode as a result of electrochemical reactions. Ultimately, gases formed by vaporization of water and electrochemical reactions cover the electrode. Since the liquid waste is electrically conductive, it elongates the ground electrode up to the border of the gas layer, where electrical discharge occurs. Without hydrogen peroxide, electrical discharge was able to remove about 50% of Fe(III)-EDTA. As the concentration of hydrogen peroxide added increased, the removal efficiency of Fe(III)-EDTA increased. When the molar ratio of hydrogen peroxide to the initial Fe(III)-EDTA was higher than 24.7, more than 80 g of Fe(III)-EDTA was removed with an energy of 1 kWh. A comparison between tungsten and steel electrodes showed that electrode material did not affect the Fe(III)-EDTA removal. In the present underwater electrical discharge process, the removal of Fe(III)-EDTA was completed within 30 min at molar ratios of hydrogen peroxide to the initial Fe(III)-EDTA higher than 24.7.

Fe-impregnated activated carbon(Fe-AC) was prepared by Fe(III) loading on activated carbon(AC) in various preparation pH. In order to evaluate the stability of Fe-AC, dissolution of iron from Fe-AC in acidic conditions was measured. In addition, batch experiments were conducted to monitor the removal efficiency of copper by Fe-AC. Results of stability test for Fe-AC showed that the amount of extracted iron increased with contact time but decreased with increasing solution pH. The dissolved amount of iron gradually increased at solution pH 2 and finally 13% of the total iron loaded on activated carbon was extracted after 12 hr. However dissolution of iron was negligible over solution pH 3. Removal of Cu(II) by Fe-AC was greatly affected by solution pH and was decreased as solution pH increased as well as initial Cu(II) concentration decreased. Surface complexation modeling was performed by considering inner-sphere complexation reaction and using the diffuse layer model with MINTEQA2 program.
We investigated that removal of aqueous U(VI) by nano-sized Zero Valent Iron (nZVI) and Fe(II) bearing minerals (controls) in this study. Iron particles showed different U(VI) removal efficiencies (Mackinawite: 99%, green rust: 95%, nZVI: 91%, magnetite: 87%, pyrite: 59%) due to their different PZC (Point of Zero Charge) values and surface areas. In addition, noticeable amount of surface Fe(II) (181 ${\mu}M$) was released from nZVI suspension in 6 h and it increased to 384 ${\mu}M$ in the presence of U(VI) due to ion-exchange of U(VI) with Fe(II) on nZVI surface. Analysis of Laser-Induced Breakdown Detection (LIBD) showed that breakdown probabilities in both filtrates by 20 and 200 nm sizes was almost 24% in nZVI suspension with U(VI), while 1% of the probabilities were observed in nZVI suspension without U(VI). It indicated that Fe(II) colloids in the range under 20 nm were generated during the interaction of U(VI) and nZVI. Our results suggest that Fe(II) colloids generated via ion-exchange process should be carefully concerned during long-term remediation site contaminated by U(VI) because U could be transported to remote area through the adsorption on Fe(II) colloids.
The hydroxyapatite (HAp) for the present study was prepared by precipitation method in semiconductor fabrication and the crystallized at ambient to 95$0^{\circ}C$ for 30min in electric furnace. The ion-exchange characteristics of HAp for various heavy metal ions such as $Cd^{2+}, Cu^{2+}, Mn^{2+}, Zn^{2+}, Fe^{2+}, Pb^{2+}, Al^{3+}, and Cr^{6+}$ in aqueous solution has been investigated. The removal ratio of various metal ions for HAp were investigated with regard to reaction time, concentration of standard solution, amount of HAp and pH of solution. The order of the ions exchanged amount was as follws: $Pb^{2+}, Fe^{3+}>Cu^{2+}>Zn^{2+}>Al^{3+}>Cd^{2+}>Mn^{2+}>Cr^{6+}. The Pb^{2+}$ ion was readily removed by the Hap, even in the strongly acidic region. The maximum amount of the ion-exchange equilibrium for $Pb^{2+}$ ion was about 45 mg/gram of HAp. The HAp would seem to be possible agent for the removal of heavy metal ions in waste water by recycling of waste sludge in semiconductor fabrication.
Adsorption and heterogeneous electro-Fenton process using iron-loaded ZSM-5 nano-zeolite were investigated for the removal of Tetracycline (TC) from wastewater. The nano-zeolite was synthesized hydrothermally and modified through impregnation. The zeolite was characterized by XRD, FT-IR, FE-SEM, N2 adsorption-desorption, and NH3-TPD techniques. The equilibrium data were best represented by the Freundlich isotherm. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model was the most accurate model for the adsorption of TC on the modified nano-zeolite. The effect of parameters such as pH of solution and current density were investigated for the heterogeneous electro-Fenton process. The results showed that the current density of 150 mA and pH of 3 led to the highest TC removal (90.35%) at 50 min. The nano-zeolite showed the appropriate reusability. Furthermore, the developed kinetic model was in good agreement with the removal data of TC through the electro-Fenton process.
Photocatalytic oxidation in the presence of Fe-doped, Zn-doped or Fe-Zn co-doped $TiO_2$ was used to effectively decompose humic acids (HAs) in water. The highest HAs removal efficiency (65.7%) was achieved in the presence of $500^{\circ}C$ calcined 0.0010% Fe-Zn co-doped $TiO_2$ with the Fe:Zn ratio of 3:2. The initial solution pH value, inorganic cations and anions also affected the catalyst photocatalytic ability. The HAs removal for the initial pH of 2 was the highest, and for the pH of 6 was the lowest. The photocatalytic oxidation of HAs was enhanced with the increase of the $Ca^{2+}$ or $Mg^{2+}$ concentration, and reduced when concentrations of some anions increased. The inhibition order of the anions on $TiO_2$ photocatalytic activities was $CO{_3}^{2-}$ > $HCO_3{^-}$ > $Cl^-$, but a slightly promotion was achieved when $SO{_4}^{2-}$ was added. Total organic carbon (TOC) removal was used to evaluate the actual HAs mineralization degree caused by the $500^{\circ}C$ calcined 0.0010% Fe-Zn (3:2) co-doped $TiO_2$. For tap water added with HAs, the $UV_{254}$ and TOC removal rates were 57.2% and 49.9%, respectively. The $UV_{254}$ removal efficiency was higher than that of TOC because of the generation of intermediates that could significantly reduce the $UV_{254}$, but not the TOC.
In point of recycling wastes, batch test was conducted to examine the neutralization and Fe removal from laboratory wastewater using wastes. Oyster shell and slag had a buffer capacity to neutralize an acidic wastewater but tire rubber didn't. With increasing reaction time, dosage and agitation speed, Fe was well removed by wastes. As a result on the experiments of Freundlich isotherm, the adsorption intensities(1/n) were 0.32∼0.46 and the adsorption capacities(k) were 4.3∼4.6 for removing Fe from laboratory wastewater by wastes. In view of these results, it was estimated that wastes containing the similar compositions as these could utilize the neutralization and adsorption of heavy metals in laboratory wastewater.

Industrial wastewater generated in the electroplating and metal finishing industries typically contain toxic free and complex metal cyanide with various heavy metals. Alkaline chlorination, the normal treatment method destroys only free cyanide, not complex metal cyanide. A novel treatment method has been developed which destroys both free and complex metal cyanide as compared with Practical Plant(I). Prior to the removal of complex metal cyanide by Fe/Zn coprecipitation and removal of others(Cu, Ni), Chromium is reduced from the hexavalent to the trivalent form by Sodium bisulfite(NaHSO$_3$), followed by alkaline-chlorination for the cyanide destruction. The maximum removal efficiency of chromium by reduction was found to be 99.92% under pH 2.0, ORP 250 mV for 0.5 hours. The removal efficiency of complex metal cyanide was max. 98.24%(residual CN: 4.50 mg/L) in pH 9.5, 240 rpm with 3.0 $\times$ 10$^{-4}$ mol of FeSO$_4$/ZnCl$_2$ for 0.5 hours. The removal efficiency of Cu, Ni using both hydroxide and sulfide precipitation was found to be max. 99.9% as Cu in 3.0 mol of Na$_2$S and 93.86% as Ni in 4.0 mol of Na$_2$S under pH 9.0$\sim$10.0, 240 rpm for 0.5 hours. The concentration of residual CN by alkaline-chlorination was 0.21 mg/L(removal efficiencies: 95.33%) under the following conditions; 1st Oxidation : pH 10.0, ORP 350 mV, reaction time 0.5 hours, 2nd Oxidation : pH 8.0, ORP 650 mV, reaction time 0.5 hours. It is important to note that the removal of free and complex metal cyanide from the electroplating wastewater should be employed by chromium reduction, Fe/Zn coprecipitation and, sulfide precipitation, followed by alkaline-chlorination for the Korean permissible limit of wastewater discharge, where the better results could be found as compared to the preceding paper as indicated in practical treatment(I).
This study is focused on manganese (Mn(II)) removal by ozonation in surface water. Instant ozone demand for the water was 0.5 mg/L in the study. When 0.5 mg/L of Mn(II) is existed in water, the optimum ozone concentration was 1.25 mg/L with reaction time 10 minutes to meet the drinking water regulation. The ozone concentration to meet the drinking water regulation was much higher than the stoichiometric concentration. The reaction of soluble manganese removal was so fast that the reaction time does not affect the removal dramatically. When Mn(II) is existed with Fe, the removal of Mn(II) was not affected by Fe ion. However As(V) is existed as co-ion the removal of Mn(II) was decreased by 10%. Adding ozone to surface water has limited effect to remove dissolved organic matter. When ozone is used as oxidant to remove Mn(II) in the water, the existing co-ion should be evaluated to determine optimum concentration.
This study evaluates tripolyphosphate's ability to treat AMD (Acid Mine Drainage). Based on the batch test results for reaction between tripolyphosphate and AMD obtained from Munkyung coal mine, $4.7{\times}10^{-3}$ mole is the optimum dosage of tripolyphosphate for AMD treatment. $Ca^{2+}$ concentration is decreased from $16.4mg/{\ell}$ to $5.6mg/{\ell}$, in other words, the removal rate of $Ca^{2+}$ is 65.9%. $Fe^{3+}$ concentration is decreased from $3.7mg/{\ell}$ to $0.02mg/{\ell}$, that is, the removal rate of $Fe^{3+}$ is 99.5%. $SO{_4}^{2-}$ concentration ranges from $526.8mg/{\ell}$ to $566.5mg/{\ell}$, which shows no obvious decrease. After dosing up tripolyphosphate, $Na^+$ concentration in AMD ranges from $549.8mg/{\ell}$ to $599.3mg/{\ell}$ and orthophosphate concentration in AMD ranges from $6.82mg/{\ell}$ to $7.60mg/{\ell}$. It was found that the precipitate in the order of amount is Apatite${\gg}{\beta}$-tricalcium phosphate > $Fe(OH)_3$ from SEM, XRF, XRD analyses. Consequently, the treatment by tripolyphosphate is effective in pH buffering and in the removal of $Ca^{2+}$ and $Fe^{3+}$.
