  • This study was performed to evaluate the effect of the addition of vegetable oils on Fenton treatment of PAHs-contaminated soil. Fenton reaction can be proceeded in the soils contaminated with PHAs only in the presence of $H_2O_2$ because of Fe content in the soil. In this case, optimum $H_2O_2$ concentration was 3%. When 17.5 mM $FeSO_4$(III) was added with 3% $H_2O_2$, the removal rate was increased up to 25%, whereas 19% of PAHs was removed with $H_2O_2$ alone. The addition of 1% of olive oil to the contaminated soil before the Fenton reaction or simultaneously increased the removal rate about 15%, compared to the case of Fenton reaction only. There were no significant differences in the removal rates of PAHs, regardless of different kinds and concentration of oils. (olive oil, soybean oil, and used-vegetable oil). The used-vegetable oils were not different from the new, expensive oils in the removal rate, so their use will be desirable in saving the money. In addition of 1% of olive oil after the reaction of 3% $H_2O_2$ and 2.5 mM $FeSO_4$(III), the removal rates of 3~4 and 5~6 ring compounds were increased 13% and 17%, respectively, compared to the case of Fenton reaction only.

  • It is difficult to meet the cleanliness requirement of $10^{10}/\textrm{cm}^2$ for the giga level device fabrication with mechanical cleaning techniques like scrubbing which is widely used to remove the particles generated during Chemical Mechanical Polishing (CMP) processes. Therefore, the second cleaning process is needed to remove metallic contaminants which were not completely removed during the mechanical cleaning process. In this paper the experimental results for the removal of the metallic contaminants existing on the wafer surface using remote plasma $H_2$ cleaning and UV/$O_3$ cleaning techniques are reported. In the remote plasma $H_2$ cleaning the efficiency of contaminants removal increases with decreasing the plasma exposure time and increasing the rf-power. Also the optimum process conditions for the removal of K, Fe and Cu impurities which are easily found on the wafer surface after CMP processes are the plasma exposure time of 1min and the rf-power of 100 W. The surface roughness decreased by 30-50 % after remote plasma $H_2$ cleaning. On the other hand, the highest efficiency of K, Fe and Cu impurities removal was achieved for the UV exposure time of 30 sec. The removal mechanism of the metallic contaminants like K, Fe and Cu in the remote plasma $H_2$ and the UV/$O_3$ cleaning processes is as follows: the metal atoms are lifted off by $SiO^*$ when the $SiO^*$is evaporated after the chemical $SiO_2$ formed under the metal atoms reacts with $H^+ \; and\; e^-$ to form $SiO^*$.

  • Effects of coagulation types on flocculation were investigated by using a photometric dispersion analyzer (PDA) as an on-line monitoring technique in this study. Nakdong River water were used and alum and ferric chloride were used as coagulants. The aim of this study is to compare the coagulation characteristics of alum and ferric chloride by a photometric dispersion analyzer (PDA). Floc growing rates ($R_v$) in three different water temperatures ($4^{\circ}C$, $16^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$) and coagulants doses (0.15 mM, 0.20 mM and 0.25 mM as Al, Fe) were measured. The floc growing rate ($R_v$) by alum was 1.8~2.8 times higher than that of ferric chloride during rapid mixing period, however, for 0.15 mM~0.25 mM coagulant doses the floc growing rate ($R_v$) by ferric chloride was 1.1~2.3 times higher than that of alum in the slow mixing period at $16^{\circ}C$ water temperature. Reasonable coagulant doses of alum and ferric chloride for turbidity removal were 0.1 mM (as Al) and 0.2 mM (as Fe), respectively, and the removal efficiency of those coagulant doses showed 94% for alum and 97% for ferric chloride. The appropriate coagulant dose of alum and ferric chloride for removing dissolved organic carbon (DOC) showed about 0.3 mM (as Al, Fe) and at this dosage, DOC removal efficiencies were 36% and 44%, and ferric chloride was superior to the alum for removal of the DOC in water.

  • Vivianite (Fe32+(PO4)2·8H2O) and green rust ([Fe42+Fe23+(OH)-12][SO42-·2H2O]2-), ferrous containing minerals, could remove aqueous U(VI) in 5 min. and the efficiencies of green rust were roughly 2 times higher than that of vivianite. The zeta potential measurement results implies that the better performance of green rust might be attributed to the favorable surface charge toward uranyl phosphate species. The removal behaviors of the minerals were well fitted by pseudo-second order kinetic model (R2 > 0.990) indicating the dominant removal process was chemical adsorption. Effects of Ca2+ and CO32- at pH 7 were examined in terms of removal kinetic and capacity. The kinetic constants of aqueous U(VI) were 8 and 13 times lower (0.492 × 10-3 g/(mg·min); 0.305 × 10-3 g/(mg·min)) compared to the value in the absence of the ions. The thermodynamic equilibrium calculation showed that the stable uranyl species (uranyl tri-carbonate) were newly formed at the condition. Surface investigation on the reacted mineral with uranyl phosphates species were carried out by XPS. Ferrous iron and U(VI) on the green rust surface were completely oxidized and reduced into Fe(III) and U(IV) after 7 d. It suggests that the ferrous minerals can retard U(VI) migration in phosphate-rich groundwater through the adsorption and subsequent reduction processes.

  • This study examined a feasibility of coagulation as post-treatment to remove sulfide and phosphorus for the effluent of anaerobic fluidized bed reactor (AFBR) treating domestic wastewater. Removal efficiencies of sulfide, phosphorus and COD by coagulation were not affected by pH in the range of 5.9 to 7.2. Alkalinity requirement could be estimated by the amount of $Fe^{3+}$ to form $Fe(OH)_{3(S)}$ and to remove sulfide and phosphorus. At coagulant aid dosage of 2 mg/L, anionic polymer showed best results regarding size and settleability of flocs. Sulfide removal for the AFBR effluent at the $Fe^{3+}/S^{2-}$ ratio of 0.64, close to the theoretical value of 0.67 found with a synthetic wastewater, was only 75.2%. One of the reasons for this high $Fe^{3+}/S^{2-}$ ratio requirement is that the AFBR effluent contains sulfide, phosphorus, hydroxide and bicarbonate which can react with $Fe^{3+}$ competitively. Concentrations of sulfide and phosphorous reduced to below 0.1 and 0.5 mg/L, respectively, at the $Fe^{3+}/S^{2-}$ ratio of 2.0. Average effluent COD of 80 mg/L, mostly soluble COD, was obtained at the dosage 50 mg $Fe^{3+}/L$ ($Fe^{3+}/S^{2-}$ ratio of 2.0) with corresponding COD removal of 55%. For better removal of COD, soluble COD removal at the AFBR should be enhanced. Coagulation with $Fe^{3+}$ removed sulfide, phosphorus and COD simultaneously in the AFBR effluent, and thus could be an alternative process for the conventional wastewater treatment processes where relatively high quality effluent is not required.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the heavy metal removal and biomass productivity in the Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) using eggshell and microalgae. The experiment was operated 6 days in the eggshell and microalgae hybrid system, and using eggshell powder and microalgae as Chlorella vulgaris. The obtained result indicated that the biomass productivity of 2.82 g/L/d from 1.12 g/L initial concentration in 6 days was reached with light transmittance of 97% at a 305 mm depth in the optical panel photobioreactor (OPPBR). The total removal efficiency of Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn and Cd was found to be 98.92%, 99.91%, 98.78%, 88.99% and 98.00% in the AMD using eggshell and Chlorella vulgaris hybrid system, respectively. Additionally, there were significant relationships between biomass and concentration of each heavy metal ($R^2$ = 0.8771, 0.8643, 0.8669, 0.9134 and 0.6277 for Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn and Cd). These results indicated that the eggshell and microalgae hybrid system was highly effective for heavy metal removal when compared to the conventional biological process in the AMD. Therefore, the eggshell and microalgae hybrid system was effective for heavy metal removal and biomass productivity and can be applied to treat AMD in treatment plant.

  • Effect of interfacial electrical conditions on adhesion of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particles to PET fabric and the removal of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particles from PET fabric, were investigated as functions of pH, electrolyte and ionic strength. The ${\zeta}$ potential of PET fiber and ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particles in the electrolyte solution were measured by streaming potential and microelectrophoresis methods respectively. The potential energy of interaction between ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particles and PET fabric were calculated by using the heterocoagulation theory for a sphere-plate model. The negative ${\zeta}$ potential of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particle and PET fiber increased with pH, and then decreased certain pH and isoelectric points of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particles and PET fiber were pH 6.5 and pH 3.5, respectively. The negative ${\zeta}$ potential of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particle and PET fiber affected by electrolytes, were relatively high with polyanion electrolytes in solutions and were low with neutral salts. However, at surfactant solution, ${\zeta}$ potential was levelled off. The influence of the ionic strength on the ${\zeta}$ potential of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particle was small but the negative ${\zeta}$ potential of PET fiber increased with the ionic strength. In the presence of anionic surfactant, the ${\zeta}$ potential of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particle and PET fiber increased regardless of solution conditions. The interaction energy between ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particle and PET fabric increased with pH. The interaction energy was relatively high with polyanion electrolytes in solution, and the influence of ionic strength on the interaction energy was small, and the effective thickness of electrical double layer increased with decreasing the ionic strength.

  • Fe- and V-doped titanium dioxide nanoparticles consisting of spherical primary nanoparticles were synthesized from a mixed liquid precursor by using the flame spray pyrolysis. The effects of dopant concentration on the powder properties such as morphology, crystal structure, and light adsorption were analyzed by TEM, XRD, and UV-Vis spectrophotometer, respectively. As the V/Ti molar ratio increased, pure anatase particles were synthesized. On the contrary, rutile phase particles were synthesized as the Fe/Ti ratio increased. Photocatalytic property of as-prepared $TiO_2:Fe,V$ nanoparticles was investigated by measuring the removal efficiency for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) under the irradiation of visible light. After 2 hrs under visible light, the removal efficiencies of benzene, p-xylene, ethylbenzene, and toluene were reached to 21.9%, 21.4%, 19.8% and 17.6% respectively.

  • This study developed a new ceramics in which natural zeolite was mixed and calcined with industrial by-product such as converter slag, red mud, and fly ash and evaluated the feasibility of the ceramics for removal of heavy metals in acid wastewater. The removal rate of heavy metal by ceramics increased in the order of ZS (zeolite and slag) > ZR (zeolite and red mud) > ZF (zeolite and fly ash) ceramics. The alkalinity increment and coherence of ceramics were increased in the order of ZS > ZR > ZF ceramics. The mixing ratio of natural zeolite to industrial by-product for maximum removal efficiency of heavy metal was 1:1 for ZS ceramics and 1:3 for ZR and ZF ceramics. The order of removal efficiency of heavy metal was observed to be ZS > ZR > ZF ceramics under the mixing ratio of 1:1 for ZS ceramics and 1:3 for ZR and ZF ceramics. The removal efficiency of heavy metal by ZS ceramics with 1:1 mixing ratio was Al 100%, Cd 54.6%, Cr 99.9%, Cu 98.7%, Fe 99.9%, Mn 42.2%, Ni 59.9%, Pb 99.8%, Zn 87.6%, respectively. In addition, the removal capacity of heavy metal by ZS ceramics was observed to be Al 2.01 mM/g, Cd 0.27 mM/g, Cr 1.02 mM/g, Cu 0.83 mM/g, Fe 0.95 mM/g, Mn 0.41 mM/g, Ni 0.55 mM/g, Pb 0.25 mM/g, Zn 0.70 mM/g, respectively. The comparative evaluation in the light of removal capacity, alkalinity increment, and coherence of ceramics showed the ZS ceramics had higher feasibility as a media than others for removal of heavy metals in acid wastewater.

  • To address physicochemical factors of yellow clay for removing Cochlodinium polykrikoides blooms, the correlation of removal efficiency with mineralogical characteristics of yellow clay collected from various areas was surveyed. Yellow clay from different localities showed the wide range of chemical compositions $SiO_2$ : 43~71%, $Al_2O_3$ : 13~26%, $Fe_2O_3$ : 5~14%, MgO : 0.4~1.8%, $K_2O$ : 0.6~3.3%, L.O.I.(Loss of Ignition) : 4.5~15%. The mineral compositions of yellow clay were mainly consisted of quartz and feldspar including small amounts of kaolinite, chlorite, and Fe-oxides. The result of size analysis showed that $6{\Phi}(31{\sim}16{\mu}m)$ and $7{\Phi}(16{\sim}8{\mu}m)$ were dominated sizes. The zeta-potential were in the range of -4.1~-20.7mV(average -13.7). As increasing removal efficiency of C. polykrikoides, contents of $Al_2O_3$, $Fe_2O_3$ and L.O.I. in yellow clay increased, whereas $SiO_2$ content decreased. Furthermore, the amounts of silt mineral and small particle were high when the removal efficiency was high. According to factor analysis using principle component analysis, two components of factor 1 and factor 2 showed 79% of the total variance, which is related to cohesion and adsorption. Inducing cell lysis of C. polykrikoides by cohension and adsorption between C. polykrikoides and yellow clay.
