This study presents the reliability assessment of a 100.5 m tall reinforced concrete chimney at a glass factory under wind loading by using vibration-based identified modal values. Ambient vibration measurements were recorded and modal values such as frequencies, shapes and damping ratios were identified by using Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition (EFDD) method. Afterwards, Finite Element Model (FEM) of the chimney was verified based on identified modal parameters. Reliability assessment of the chimney under wind loading was performed by obtaining the exceedance probability of demand to capacity distribution. Demand distribution of the chimney was developed under repetitive seeds of multivariate stochastic wind fields generated along the height of chimney. Capacity distribution of the chimney was developed by Monte Carlo simulation. Finally, it was found that reliability of the chimney is lower than code suggested limit values.

A reliability-based slope stability assessment method considering fluctuations in the monitored matric suction was proposed for real-time identification of slope risk. The assessment model was based on the limit equilibrium model for infinite slope failure. The first-order reliability method (FORM) was adopted to calculate the probability of slope failure, and results of the model were compared with Monte-Carlo Simulation (MCS) results to validate the accuracy and efficiency of the model. The analysis shows that a model based on Advanced First-Order Reliability Method (AFORM) generates results that are in relatively good agreement with those of the MCS, using a relatively small number of function calls. The contribution of random variables to the slope reliability index was also examined using sensitivity analysis. The results of sensitivity analysis indicate that the effective cohesion c' is a significant variable at low values of mean matric suction, whereas matric suction ($u_a-u_w$) is the most influential factor at high mean suction values. Finally, the reliability indices of an unsaturated model soil slope, which was monitored by a wireless matric suction measurement system, were illustrated as 2D images using the suggested probabilistic model.
PURPOSE: Most gait assessment tools are expensive and require controlled laboratory environments. Tri-axial accelerometers have been used in gait analysis as an alternative to laboratory assessments. Many smartphones have added an accelerometer, making it possible to assess spatio-temporal gait parameters. This study was conducted to confirm the reliability and validity of a smartphone-based accelerometer at quantifying spatio-temporal gait parameters of stroke patients when attached to the body. METHODS: We measured gait parameters using a smartphone accelerometer and gait parameters through the GAITRite analysis system and the reliability and validity of the smartphone-based accelerometer for quantifying spatio-temporal gait parameters for stroke patients were then evaluated. Thirty stroke patients were asked to walk at self-selected comfortable speeds over a 10 m walkway, during which time gait velocity, cadence and step length were computed from smartphone-based accelerometers and validated with a GAITRite analysis system. RESULTS: Smartphone data was found to have excellent reliability ($ICC2,1{\geq}.98$) for measuring the tested parameters, with a high correlation being observed between smartphone-based gait parameters and GAITRite analysis system-based gait parameters (r = .99, .97, .41 for gait velocity, cadence, step length, respectively). CONCLUSION: The results suggest that specific opportunities exist for smartphone-based gait assessment as an alternative to conventional gait assessment. Moreover, smartphone-based gait assessment can provide objective information about changes in the spatio-temporal gait parameters of stroke subjects.
In this paper a brief overview of methods to assess the reliability of mechanical systems and structures is presented. A selection of computational procedures, stochastic structural dynamics, stochastic fatigue crack growth and reliability based optimization are discussed. It is shown that reliability based methods may form the basis for a rational decision making.
The change of rainfall pattern and hydrologic factors due to climate change increases the occurrence probability of agricultural reservoir water shortage. Water supply assessment of reservoir is usually performed current reservoir level compared to historical water levels or the simulation of reservoir operation based on the water budget analysis. Since each reservoir has the native property for watershed, irrigation district and irrigation water requirement, it is necessary to improve the assessment methods of agricultural reservoir water capability about water resources system. This study proposed a practical methods that water supply vulnerability assessment for an agricultural reservoir based on a concept of probabilistic reliability. The vulnerability assessment of water supply is calculated from probability distribution of water demand condition and water supply condition that influences on water resources management and reservoir operations. The water supply vulnerability indices are estimated to evaluate the performance of water supply on agricultural reservoir system, and thus it is recommended a more objective method to evaluate water supply reliability.
In this paper, a limit state model based on the analysis of structural behavior of segmental prestressed concrete box girder bridges and reliability-based safety assessment method are proposed for the bridges erected by free cantilever method. Strength limit state models for prestressed concrete box girder and rigid-frame type columns are developed for a structural safety assessment during construction. Based on the proposed limit state models, the reliability of the bridge is evaluated by using the Advanced First Order Second Moment method. The proposed model and method are applied to the Seo-Hae Grand Bridge built by FCM in order to verify its effectiveness in the safety assessment during construction of the kind of bridges. The sensitivity analyses of the main parameters are also performed in order to identify the important factors that need to be controlled for the safety of the bridges during construction.
As one of promising solutions to overcome high oil price and energy crisis, the construction market of high value-added LNG plants is spotlighted world widely. The purpose of this study is to introduce LNG-RBI system to develop risk assessment technology with RAM(Reliability, Availability, Maintainability) modules against overseas monopolization. After analyzing relevant specific features and their technical levels, risk assessment program, non-destructive reliability evaluation strategy and safety criteria unification class are derived as core technologies. These IT-based convergence technologies can be used for enhancement of LNG plant efficiency, in which the modular parts are related to a system with artificial optimized algorithms as well as diverse databases of facility inspection and diagnosis fields.
A reliability based slope stability assessment method is proposed and examined considering the variation of matric suction which is measured by a real time slope monitoring system. Mean value first order reliability method and advanced first order reliability method are used to calculate reliability indices of a slope. The applicability of methods is compared by applying them to the range of matric suctions measured by the real-time monitoring system. Sensitivity analysis is also performed to examine the contribution of random variables to the reliability index of slope. Finally, the proposed method is applied to a model slope. The results show that the reliability index of slope can be used for efficient slope management by quantifying the risk of slope in real time.
One of the main objectives of this study is to propose a realistic limit state model for reliability-based safety assessment of precast segmental prestressed concrete box girder bridges, considering 1) combined effects of bending, shear and torsional forces, and 2) the difference between transverse reinforcments of box girder. A improved limit state model is derived from a modified interaction equation compared with the Bruno's equation. A Drectional sampling algorithm is used for reliability analysis of the proposed model.
