  • Stable operation of the dam and the river is directly related to the life and property of citizens, and hydrological observation data reliability is essential to the safety against disaster. Even though real-time data acquisition with high accuracy is needed for scientific and reliable water resources management, currently operating water gauges installed on the upper and down stream of dams or rivers are not easy to be calibrated or corrected on site to ensure higher reliability. K-water Institute has been operating an international accredited calibration laboratory for flows meters, rainfall and water gauges. Rainfall gauges are calibrated in the fixed standard room or on-site. However, due to the absence of on-site calibration procedure and system, on-site calibration for the water gauges are performed by an external agency. Therefore, a development of standard calibration procedure and system for on-site calibration of water gauges is needed to improve the reliability of observed hydrological data.

  • In this study, the NREL 5 MW wind turbine tower model was optimized according to the multi-body dynamics and reliability-based design. The mathematical model was defined as a link-joint system including dynamic characteristics derived from Timoshenko's beam theory. For the optimization problem, the sensitivities to variations in the tower thicknesses and inner and outer diameters were acquired and arranged in terms of safety and efficiency according to bending stress and buckling standards. An optimal design was calculated with the advanced first-order second moment method and used to define a finite element model for validation. The finite element model was simulated by static analysis. The relationship between the multi-body dynamic and finite element method throughout the process was investigated, and the optimal model, which had high endurance despite its low mass, was determined.

  • Electric vehicle performance is very dependent on traction batteries. For developing the electric vehicles with high performance and good reliability, the traction batteries have to be managed to get maximum performance under various operating conditions. The enhancement of the battery performance can be accomplished by implementing battery management system (BMS) that plays important roles of optimizing the control mechanism of charge and discharge of the batteries as well as monitoring battery status. In this study the battery management system has been developed for maximizing the use of Ni/MH batteries in electric vehicle. This system provides several tasks: the control of charging and discharging, overcharge and over-discharge protection, the calculation and display of state of charge, safety and thermal management. The BMS was installed in and tested using the DEV5-5 electric vehicle developed by Daewoo Motor Co. and Institute for Advanced Engineering in Korea. The 18 modules of Panasonic Ni/MH battery, 12 V-95 Ah, were used in the DEV5-5. The high accuracy within the range of $3\%$ and the good reliability were shown in the test results. The BMS can also improve the performance and cycle life of Ni/MH battery pack as well as the reliability and safety of the electric vehicles (EV).

In order to cut down on costs, save time, and increase reliability, the model based testing approach is the best solution. Such an approach does not require applications or codes prior to generating test cases, so it leads to the early detection of faults, which helps in reducing the development time. Several model-based testing approaches have used different UML models but very few works have been reported to show the generation of test cases that use events. Test cases that use events are an apt choice for these types of systems. However, these works have considered events that happen at a user interface level in a system while other events that happen in a system are not considered. Such works have limited applications in testing the GUI of a system. In this paper, a novel model-based testing approach is presented using business events, state events, and control events that have been captured directly from requirement specifications. The proposed approach documents events in event templates and then builds an event-flow model and a fault model for a system. Test coverage criterion and an algorithm are designed using these models to generate event sequence based test scenarios and test cases. Unlike other event based approaches, our approach is able to detect the proposed faults in a system. A prototype tool is developed to automate and evaluate the applicability of the entire process. Results have shown that the proposed approach and supportive tool is able to successfully derive test scenarios and test cases from the requirement specifications of safety critical systems, real time systems, and event based systems.

  • Currently, the electro-hydraulic servo loading control system manufactured by MTS, OpenFresco hybrid test interface software and OpenSees finite element software are widely used in structure laboratories to carry out hybrid test, but there is no relevant public information about full structure pseudo-dynamic test based on the above software and hardware. In order to study the feasibility of using the above software and hardware to carry out full structure pseudo-dynamic test, the full structure pseudo-dynamic virtual experiments of a single degree of freedom (SDOF) structure and a two degrees of freedom (2DOFs) structure are carried out based on the MTS 793 Demo Mode, and the results are respectively compared with the finite element analysis method. The results show that the finite element analysis results and full structure pseudo-dynamic virtual experiment results are highly consistent, which verifies the feasibility of carrying out the full structure pseudo-dynamic test based on the above software and hardware. Then, a three story steel frame full structure pseudo-dynamic test is conducted, and the smooth implementation of full structure pseudo-dynamic test of the three story steel frame further verifies the reliability of thistesting method. The implementation method of carrying out the full structure pseudo-dynamic tests are introduced in detail, which can provide some reference for relevant research.

  • Today, controller area network(CAN) is a field bus that is nowadays widespread in distributed embedded systems due to its electrical robustness, low price, and deterministic access delay. However, its use safety-critical applications has been controversial due to dependability limitation, such as those arising from its bus topology. Thus it is important to analyze the performance of the network in terms of load of data bus, maximum time delay, communication contention, and others during the design phase of the controller area network. In this paper, a simulation algorithm is introduced to evaluate the communication performance of the vehicle network and apply software base fault injection techniques. This can not only reduce any erratic implementation of the vehicle network but it also improves the reliability of the system.

  • The purpose of this research is to derive and evaluate priorities for critical factors that must be determined before an enterprise adopts a cloud computing service. AHP analysis techniques were used to reflect decisions made by experts as research methods. AHP is a decision-making technique that expresses complex decision-making problems hierarchically and derives the best alternatives through pairwise comparison between the items of the hierarchy. Compared to the existing statistical decision making techniques, the decision making process is systematic and simple, making it easy to understand. In addition, the procedure is also reasonable by providing an indicator to determine the consistency of the decision maker in the analysis process. The analysis results of this research showed that security was the first priority, reliability was the second priority, and economic efficiency was the third priority. Among the factors in the first-priority security items, the access control rights and the safety factors of external threats are the most important factors. Research results can be used as a guideline in future practice, and it is necessary to evaluate, compare and analyze the satisfaction of companies that have adopted cloud computing services in the future.

  • In this paper, we present the process of developing an automatic carrying and arming system for testing ammunition. When carrying out shooting tests at a domestic rifle range, most of the ammunition operations are carried out by human manpower The series of test processes, such as transporting, arming and firing of heavy munitions, is repeated by employing human. If the ammunition is loaded via manpower, then problems can occur such as loss of reliability of test results, musculoskeletal disorders of humans and also safety accidents can occur. To address these problems, an automated system was developed for the transport and operation of ammunition. This paper covers the design, manufacture and operation of the developed system. In addition, this study validated the effectiveness of the system as compared to the human operation. Our results show that the developed system can be easily adapted to testing ammunition at a domestic rifle range.

  • A molded transformer is maintenance-free, which makes it unnecessary to replace the insulating material, like in an oil-filled transformer, because the epoxy, which is a molded insulating resin, does not suffer variations in its insulating performance for heat cycles over a long time, as compared to insulating oil. In spite of these advantages, a molded transformer may still be accessed by the user, which is not good in regards to reliability or noise compared to the oil transformers. In particular, a distrust exists regarding reliability due to the long-term insulating performance. These properties have been studied in regards to the improvement of epoxy composites and molded transformer insulation. There have nevertheless been insufficient investigations into the insulation properties of epoxy composites. In this study, it is a researching of the epoxy for insulating material. In order to prepare the specimens, a main resin, a hardener, an accelerator, and a nano/micro filler were used. Varying amounts of TiO2 and ZnO nano fillers were added to the epoxy mixture along with a fixed amount of micro silica. This paper presents the DC insulation breakdown test, thermal expansion coefficient, and thermal conductivity results for the manufactured specimens. From these results, it has been found that the insulating performance of nano/micro epoxy composites is improved as compared to plain molded transformer insulation, and that nano/micro epoxy composites contribute to the reliability and compactness of molded transformers.
