  • Formation of Z-DNA, a left-handed double helix, from B-DNA, the canonical right-handed double helix, occurs during important biological processes such as gene expression and DNA transcription. Such B-Z transitions can also be induced by high salt concentration in vitro, but the changes in the relative stability of B-DNA and Z-DNA with salt concentration have not been fully explained despite numerous attempts. For example, electrostatic effects alone could not account for salt-induced B-Z transitions in previous studies. In this paper, we propose that the B-Z transition can be explained if counterion entropy is considered along with the electrostatic interactions. This can be achieved by conducting all-atom, explicit-solvent MD simulations followed by MM-PBSA and molecular DFT calculations. Our MD simulations show that counterions tend to bind at specific sites in B-DNA and Z-DNA, and that more ions cluster near Z-DNA than near B-DNA. Moreover, the difference in counterion ordering near B-DNA and Z-DNA is larger at a low salt concentration than at a high concentration. The results imply that the exclusion of counterions by Z-DNA-binding proteins may facilitate Z-DNA formation under physiological conditions.

  • Kim and Lee(2005) suggested Minimum Entropy Deconvolution(MED) to estimate the temporal sequence of the relative recharge. However this study by Kim and Lee(2005) was just related to the verification of the conceptual approach with MED. In this study, we try to characterize the applicability of MED in the case of spatially heterogeneous recharge (distance from recharge area). Simulated results were recorded with some specific sampling points. Estimated results from this study show higher than 0.8 in cross-correlation with the original recharge sequence.

  • Previously most of flood prevention efforts have been made for relatively large watersheds near to channel flow. However, as economical development and the expansion of leisure areas to mountainous region, human casualty by flash flood occurs frequently, requiring additional prevention activity. Therefore, to reduce the damage of human lives and property by flash flood, we develop an assessment method for flash flood occurrence for mountainous areas considering various factors involving it. PROMETHEE(Preference Ranking Organization METHod for Enrichment Evaluations) which is one of the MCDM(Multi-Criteria Decision Making) was adopted to assess the contribution of each factor to the risk of the flash flood in the mountainous area. The main evaluation criteria are classified into three categories, namely, the regional and rainfall characteristics, and geographical features. Also, the Entropy method is used to determine the weight of each evaluation criteria without survey. The suggested method based on PROMETHEE with Entropy method is applied to BongHwa region to verify its applicability. After applied, the method successfully assesses the relative risk of flash flood occurrence of each sub region in the BongHwa region. Out of the seventeen sub-regions, five, seven and five of them are evaluated as high-risk, medium-risk, and low-risk, respectively. To verify the results, we searched the historical data of flash flood and the flash flood had occurred in one of high-risk sub-regions at 2008.

  • In this paper we study the quasi-neutral limit of the compressible magnetohydrodynamic flows in the periodic domain ${\mathbb{T}}^3$ with the well-prepared initial data. We prove that the weak solution of the compressible magnetohydrodynamic flows governed by the Poisson equation converges to the strong solution of the compressible flow of magnetohydrodynamic flows as long as the latter exists.

  • $La_{1-z}Nd_z(Fe_{0.88}Si_{0.12})_{13}$ and their hydrides were investigated to obtain large magnetocaloric effects (MCEs) in a wide temperature range, including room temperature, for applications in magnetic refrigents. Since the magnetization change due to the itinerant-electron metamagentic (IEM) transition for $La_{1-z}Nd_z(Fe_{0.88}Si_{0.12})_{13}$ becomes larger with increasing z, the isothermal magnetic entropy change ${\Delta}S_m$ and the relative cooling power (RCP) are enhanced. In addition, the Curie temperatrue $T_C$ of $La_{0.8}Nd_{0.2}(Fe_{0.88}Si_{0.12})_{13}$ is increased from 193 to 319 K by hydrogen absorption, with the IEM transition. The maximum value of $-{\Delta}S_m$, $-{\Delta}S{_m}^{max}$, in a magnetic field change of 2 T for $La_{0.8}Nd_{0.2}(Fe_{0.88}Si_{0.12})_{13}H_{1.1}$ is about 23 J/kg K at $T_C$ = 288 K, which is larger than that of 19 J/kg K at $T_C$ = 276 K for $La(Fe_{0.88}Si_{0.12})_{13}H_{1.0}$. The value of RCP = 179 J/kg of the former is also larger than 160 J/kg of the latter. It is concluded that the partial substitution of Nd improves MCEs in a wide temperautre range, including room temperature.

  • Both the selection of indicators and weights for them are critical issues in the vulnerability assessment. This study is to assess the air pollution vulnerability focused on ozone for 249 local jurisdictions using weights calculated by the entropy methodology and then examine the applicability of the methodology. We selected indicators for air pollution vulnerability assessment and standardized them. Subsequently, we calculated weights of each indicator using the entropy method and then integrated them into the vulnerability index. The exposure indicators consider meteorological and air pollution factors and the sensitivity of the local jurisdiction include variables on vulnerable areas and environments. The adaptive capacity contains socio-economic characteristics, health care capacities and air pollution managemental factors. The results show that Hwaseong-si, Gwangjin-gu, Gimpo-si, Gwangju-si, Gunpo-si are among the highest vulnerabilities based on the simple aggregation of indicators. And vulnerability-resilience (VRI) aggregation results indicates the similar spatial pattern with the simple aggregation outcomes. This article extends current climate change vulnerability assessment studies by adopting the entropy method to evaluate relative usefulness of data. In addition, the results can be used for developing customized adaptation policies for each jurisdiction reflecting vulnerable aspects.

  • We report the structural, magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of $Sr_{1.8}Pr_{0.2}FeMo_{1-x}W_xO_6$($0.0{\leq}x{\leq}0.4$) samples prepared by the conventional solid state reaction method. The X-ray diffraction analysis confirms the formation of the tetragonal double perovskite structure with a I4/mmm space group in all the synthesized samples. The temperature dependent magnetization measurements reveal that all the samples go through a ferromagnetic to paramagnetic phase transition with an increasing temperature. The Arrott plot obtained for each synthesized sample demonstrates the second order nature of the magnetic phase transition. A magnetic entropy change is obtained from the magnetic isotherms. The values of maximum magnetic entropy change and relative cooling power at an applied field of 2.5 T are found to be $0.40Jkg^{-1}K^{-1}$ and $69Jkg^{-1}$ respectively for the $Sr_{1.8}Pr_{0.2}FeMoO_6$ sample. The tunability of magnetization and excellent magnetocaloric features at low applied magnetic field make these materials attractive for use in magnetic refrigeration technology.

  • The rapid climatic changes being caused by global warming are resulting in abnormal weather conditions worldwide, which in some regions have increased the frequency of landslides. This study was aimed to analyze and compare the landslide susceptibility using the Frequency Ratio (FR), Statistical Index, Weight of Evidence, Certainty Factor, and Index of Entropy (IoE) at Woomyeon Mountain in South Korea. Through the construction of a landslide inventory map, 164 landslide locations in total were found, of which 50 (30%) were reserved to validate the model after 114 (70%) had been chosen at random for model training. The sixteen landslide conditioning factors related to topography, hydrology, pedology, and forestry factors were considered. The results were evaluated and compared using relative operating characteristic curve and the statistical indexes. From the analysis, it was shown that the FR and IoE models were better than the other models. The FR model, with a prediction rate of 0.805, performed slightly better than the IoE model with a prediction rate of 0.798. These models had the same sensitivity values of 0.940. The IoE model gave a specific value of 0.329 and an accuracy value of 0.710, which outperforms the FR model which gave 0.276 and 0.680, respectively, to predict the spatial landslide in the study area. The generated landslide susceptibility maps can be useful for disaster and land use planning.

  • In this paper, magnetic property and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in perovskite manganites of the type $La_{(0.75-X)}Ce_XCa_{0.25}MnO_3$ (x = 0.0, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.5) synthesized by using the standard solid state reaction method have been reported. From the magnetic measurements as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field, we have observed that the Curie temperature ($T_C$) of the prepared samples strongly dependent on Ce content and was found to be 255, 213 and 150 K for x = 0.0, 0.2 and 0.3, respectively. A large magnetocaloric effect in vicinity of $T_C$ has been observed with a maximum magnetic entropy change (${\mid}{\Delta}S_M{\mid}_{max}$) of 3.31 and 6.40 J/kgK at 1.5 and 4 T, respectively, for $La_{0.55}Ce_{0.2}Ca_{0.25}MnO_3$. In addition, relative cooling power (RCP) of the sample under the magnetic field variation of 1.5 T reaches 59 J/kg. These results suggest that $La_{0.55}Ce_{0.2}Ca_{0.25}MnO_3$ compound could be a suitable candidate as working substance in magnetic refrigeration at 213 K.
