  • The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of parent-child relationship perceived by university students on value of marriage and partner selection criteria. Questionnaires were distributed to 467 university students with questions covering topics including general personal information and characteristics, parent-child relationship, value of marriage and partner selection criteria. To analysis the data, t-test, ANOVA, and two step cluster analysis was used. The female group A with passive parent-child relationship had high level of negative value of marriage, male group D with active parent-child relationship had high level of romantic and instrumental value of marriage. The male and female passive group considered external condition as a partner selection criteria more than male and female active group does. As a partner selection criteria, passive male group recognized internal condition more than passive and active female group does. and active female group recognized situational condition more than passive male group does. This study reveals that university students' parent-child relationship does have an effect on their value of marriage and partner selection criteria. It is therefore proposed that diversify objectives and education content of family life education should relate not only to individuals' value of marriage but also to their parent-child relationship.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze how couples relationship education (CRE) programs in Korean scholarly journals have been developed since they first appeared in 1994. Method: We selected articles that were published in journals related to human ecology and that included information about how the authors developed CRE programs (premarital education, marriage education). Using coding schemes based on the theoretical frameworks of CRE, we quantitatively coded programs in four specific areas: (a) overall characteristics, (b) program planning, (c) program construction and implementation, and (d) program evaluation. Results: Although CRE programs have increased and evolved since the 1990s, the literature has been limited on testing long-term program efficacy, developing dissemination plans, and applying theories to program design. In terms of program participants and content, most programs had similar themes despite their differences in the target audience. We also found that few programs have been provided for diverse couples. As for evaluation, pre- and post-testing was the most common method of efficacy test. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that family researchers and practitioners develop more elaborate and systematic programs to advance CRE in Korea as a core topic of family life education and to provide evidence-informed practice.

  • This study aimed at exploring the influence of 'Healthy couple relationship' education on the relationship formation competencies and marriage values of high school students. To achieve the research objective, the 'Healthy couple relationship' lesson plan developed by the author was executed in two high schools for eight weeks from September 1 to November 3, 2018 from which the effects were analyzed. The results are as follows. First, the 'healthy couple relationship' education for high school students has been effective in improving their relationship performance, which is a part of the home economics curriculum. In S high school, the paired t-test of pre-/post-test comparison results showed statistically significant differences in the areas of 'communication', 'conflict resolution' and 'relationship formation performance'. For Sejong City campus-type joint curriculum group, where Wilcoxson signed-rank test was applied due to small sample size, showed that the overall scores as well as all the subsections of 'relationship formation performance' (i.e., 'communication', 'self-understanding', 'conflict resolution', and 'empathy') have improved, although not statistically significant. Second, the 'Healthy couple relationship' education for high school students had positive effects on the marriage values of high school students. In S high school, students' perception of marriage values rendered a statistically significant positive change, while in campus-type joint curriculum in Sejong City, no statistical significance was detected. In conclusion, the 'Healthy couple relationship' education can help high school students build positive values by cultivating their 'relationship formation competence', which is a part of the competencies listed in home economics curriculum, and also broaden their understanding of marriage, by acquiring knowledge and skills to build healthy couple relationships, and learning to implement the knowledge and skills in their own lives.

  • This study examined the relationship between parental efficacy, marriage satisfaction, social support, neighborhood context, and parental involvement in preschool children's education in low income families. Total 460 low income parents' data about parental efficacy, marriage satisfaction, social support, neighborhood context, and parental involvement are collected from the data of index studies for Korean child and adolescent's development in 2009. Parental efficacy, marriage satisfaction, perceived social support and perceived neighborhood context correlated positively with parental involvement. Regression analysis detected different patterns of association between these variables and the three dimensions of parent involvement. Perceived neighborhood context was associated with child care involvement, while parental efficacy was the most influential factor related to child leisure involvement. Marriage satisfaction was the strongest factor influencing involvement in children's educational activity. These results support the validity of a multi-dimensional, ecological conceptualization of parent involvement in low income families.
