  • Objectives The aim of this study is to investigate the related factors of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Methods The subjects were 187 persons diagnosed as fatty liver by abdominal ultrasonography. They were divided into three groups according to the severity of fatty liver: control, mild, moderate or severe. The three groups' general characteristics, laboratory results, liver function indexes, metabolic syndrome indexes, tumor markers, heart rate variability values and Sasang constitution distribution were compared and analyzed. Results Male ratio, height, weight, body mass index, red blood cell count, hemoglobin level and creatinine level were higher in NAFLD groups than in control group. The levels of sodium and amylase were higher in control than in NAFLD. In liver function, the levels of aspartate transaminase, alanine transaminase and gamma-glutamyl transpepsidase of NAFLD were higher. In metabolic syndrome index, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, waist circumference, total cholesterol, triglyceride and low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were higher in NAFLD, while high density lipoprotein cholesterol level was higher in control. The alpha-feto protein level was higher in NAFLD, and the heart rate variability was not different between NAFLD and control groups. In Sasang constitution, Taeeumin ratio of NAFLD was higher than of control. Conclusions The results suggest that nonalcoholic fatty liver is clinically related to liver dysfunction, metabolic syndrome, tumor markers, and Sasang constitution. Further studies are needed to control nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and prevent severe disease such as cirrhosis and cancer caused by fatty liver.

  • Leaf diffusive resistance (LDR), stomatal density, length of guard cell and hair density of leaves of 6 oak species were determined under withdrawal of water, and their strategies of drought stress were analyzed by principal component analysis. LDR of Quercus acutissima, Q. aliena and Q. serrata increased earlier than those of the other species at high leaf water potential $({\Psi}_{leaf})$ or low water saturation deficit (WSD), which was an avoidance mechanism reducing damage by water stress. Q. variabilis with low stomatal density, small stomatal size and high hair density had avoidance mechanisms increasing LDR at high $({\Psi}_{leaf})$ However, Q. mongolica and Q. dentata increased LDR at low $({\Psi}_{leaf})$ as xeric species do. Results from principal component analysis on the 15 variables related to strategies of drought stress indicated that the 6 oak species were divided into 2 groups: (1) Q. acutissima, Q. aliena and Q. serrata as mesic habitat species and (2) Q. variabilis, Q. mongolica and Q. dentata as xeric habitat species. Among three xeric species Q. acutissima differed from the other two species in the drought strategies such as high hair density, low stornatal density, high leaf area ratio, stomatal closing at low $({\Psi}_{leaf})$ and small cell wall elasticity. The results could reasonably explain their drought strategies in natural habitat.

  • The testis is an extremely heterogeneous organ, containing numerous compartments types. Morphometric studies were performed of 3 avian species (pigeon, pheasant and chicken) to determine volume density absolute volume, numerical density, total number of serminiferous tubule components, and sperm production, especially those related to the Sertoli cell, and to make comparisons among the species. Volume density of seminiferous tubule components per testis was determined by point counting method. Testis volume and sperm production were measured by routine techniques. Numerical density (the number of cells per unit volume of testis) of seminiferous tubule components per testis was determined by morphometry (Floderus method). The volume density of seminiferous tubules per testis was 91.58, 92.18 and 94.21% in pigeon, pheasant, and chicken, respectively. The volume density of spermatogonium, spermatocyte, spermatid, spermatozoon, and Sertoli cell did not produce significant changes in the three species. The absolute volume of spermatogonium, spermatocyte, spermatid, and Sertoli cell showed significant changes in the three species (p<0.05). The average volume of Sertoli cell ranged from 758.34(pheasant) to 1,212.9 ㎛$^3$(chicken) and was not significantoy different in the three species(p>0.05). The number of Sertoli cells per testis showed significant differences in the three species : 34.52 $\times$10(sup)6, 186.82$\times$10(sup)6, 810.62$\times$10(sup)6 in pigeon, pheasant, and chicken, respectively(p<0.05). The sperm production was significantly different in the three species : 3,018$\times$10(sup)6, 993.9$\times$10(sup)6, and 8.9$\times$10(sup)6 in chicken, pheasant, and pigeon, respectively(p<0.05). These results suggest that number of Sertoli cells may be more important than Sertoli cell size in explaining the difference in sperm production among the three species.

  • The purpose of this study was to find the relationship between osteoporosis and various factors such as general personal background, physical activity, menstruation, daily life and dietary habit. The following are the results of this study: 1. In the relationship of osteoporosis status with general personal background, the risk of osteoporosis increased with age. Active women with higher education, high income and jobs tended to have less risk of osteoporosis. Women with earlier menarche had a tendency of having thicker bone mineral density. 2. As for disease related to bone mineral density, stomach disease, thyroid, bone damage, and bad teeth conditions were significant factors affecting bone mineral density. Women with those diseases and family history of osteoporosis were more likely to have osteoporosis. 3. In relation to food intake regular diet of dairy products, anchovy, or meat showed significantly less risk of osteoporosis. 4. In relation between dietary habits and bone mineral density, unbalanced diet had statistically less probability of osteoporosis. It is important for genetically disposed women to prevent osteoporosis in advance by considering acquired factors like life-style and medication.

  • Users tend to check in and post their statuses in location-based social networks (LBSNs) to describe that their interests are related to a point-of-interest (POI). While previous studies on discovering area-of-interests (AOIs) were conducted mostly on the basis of density-based clustering methods with the collection of geo-tagged photos from LBSNs, we focus on estimating a POI boundary, which corresponds to only one cluster containing its POI center. Using geo-tagged tweets recorded from Twitter users, this paper introduces a density-based low-complexity two-phase method to estimate a POI boundary by finding a suitable radius reachable from the POI center. We estimate a boundary of the POI as the convex hull of selected geo-tags through our two-phase density-based estimation, where each phase proceeds with different sizes of radius increment. It is shown that our method outperforms the conventional density-based clustering method in terms of computational complexity.

  • This study attempted to examine how the hydrogen embrittlement susceptibility of the STS 444 stainless steel varies under different welding conditions and how its effect on hydrogen embrittlement differs by the impressed current density levels. For doing so, U bend test specimens was used to impress the current density at 5,10, 15, and 20 $mA/cm^2$ in the $0.5M\;H_2SO_4+0.001M\;As_2O_3$ solution with an electrochemical corrosion tester. The hydrogen embrittlement was assessed by observing the time to failure, and then the microphotographs of metal structures were compared to investigate the metal- related structural properties. The study findings suggest that the effect on hydrogen embrittlement for the STS 444 steel significantly depends on both the welding conditions, or variations in the amount of shield gas, and the levels of current density. In particular, as the impressed current density increases, the hydrogen embrittlement increases rapidly.

  • We have examined the histological changes of skin during hair follicle growth after depilation in C57BL/6N mice. We first studied on histological changes of number of mast cells and thickness of skin during hair follicle growth periods (telogen, 1 day, 3 day, 5 day, 10 day, 14 day, 17 day and 21 day after depilation) by toluidine blue, Giemsa and H&E staining methods. We second studied immunoreactive density of cytokines and Brdu labeled cells in skin during hair follicle growth periods after depilation in C57BL/6N mice by immunohistochemical methods. The histological changes on skin thickness was increased from telogen to 14 day. The number of mast cells was decreased in 3,5 and 10 day and increased in 14, 17 and 20 day after depilation. Immunoreactive density of cytokines [protein kinase C-${\alpha}$ (PKC-${\alpha}$), c-kit, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)] in 1, 3, 5, 10, and 14 day after depilation was mildly stained in bulge and cutaneous trunci m., but immunoreactive density of cytokines in 17 and 21 day was heavily stained in epidermis, bulge, outer root sheath (ORS), inner root sheath (IRS) and cutaneous trunci m.. Immunoreactive density of Brdu labeled cells in skin in 1 and 3 day was heavily stained in bulge, epidermis and connective tissue under the cutaneous trunci m.. In all periods, immunoreactive density of Brdu labeled cells in skin was heavily stained in bulge, subcutaneous tissue, cutaneous trunci m, ORS and IRS. These experiments suggest that histological changes related to hair follicle growth elevated mast cell counts, skin thickness and epidermis thickness and heavily stained immunoreactive density of cytokines and Brdu labeled cutaneous trunci m. and connective tissue under the cutaneous trunci m. after depilation in C57BL/6N mice.

  • This study was carried out to determine the withdrawal strength of various screws according to root diameter of screw and embeded length on the face and edge of domestic particleboard and medium density fiberboard. The obtained results were as follows: 1. The withdrawal strength of screw in domestic particleboard and medium density fiberboard was closely related to embeded length of the screw but less dependent on root diameter of the screw. 2. The withdrawal strength on the face and edge of domestic particleboard could be predicted by means of the following expression: $F_{Pf}=4.60{\times}D^{0.24}{\times}L^{1.14}(R^2=0.87)$ $F_{Pe}=0.54{\times}D^{0.43}{\times}L^{1.73}(R^2=0.84)$ Where: $F_{Pf}$ : withdrawal strength on the face of particleboard(kgf) $F_{Pe}$=withdrawal strength on the edge of particleboard(kgf) D=diameter of the screw(mm) L=embeded length(mm) 3. The withdrawal strength on the face and edge of domestic medium density fiberboard could he predicted by means of the following expression: $FM_f=1.53{\times}D^{0.53}{\times}L^{1.39}(R^2=0.93)$ $F_{Me}=1.14{\times}D^{0.66}{\times}L^{1.36}(R^2=0.87)$ where: $F_{Mf}$ = withdrawal strength on the face of medium density fiberboard(kgf) $F_{Mf}$=withdrawal strength on the edge of medium density fiberboard(kgf).
