  • Bridge piers with bending failure mode are seriously damaged only in the area of plastic hinge length in earthquakes. For this situation, a modified method for the layout of longitudinal reinforcement is presented, i.e., the number of longitudinal reinforcement is increased in the area of plastic hinge length at the bottom of piers. The quasi-static test of three scaled model piers is carried out to investigate the local longitudinal reinforcement at the bottom of the pier on the seismic performance of the pier. One of the piers is modified by increased longitudinal reinforcement at the bottom of the pier and the other two are comparative piers. The results show that the pier failure with increased longitudinal bars at the bottom is mainly concentrated at the bottom of the pier, and the vulnerable position does not transfer. The hysteretic loop curve of the pier is fuller. The bearing capacity and energy dissipation capacity is obviously improved. The bond-slip displacement between steel bar and concrete decreases slightly. The finite element simulations have been carried out by using ANSYS, and the results indicate that the seismic performance of piers with only increasing the number of steel bars (less than65%) in the plastic hinge zone can be basically equivalent to that of piers that the number of steel bars in all sections is the same as that in plastic hinge zone.

  • This study aims to suggest an appropriate flexural reinforcement technique by evaluating the reinforcement capacity of specimens that underwent flexural reinforcement according to the post-tension method with the anchoring position of an unbonded tension member on the conventional SC composite beam and the applied tension level as variables. For the experiment, up to a predetermined yield load was applied to each type of specimen and then, unbounded post-tensioning was additionally conducted to examine its reinforcement capacity. The analysis of the said experiment showed that the post-reinforced SC composite beam was characterized by significantly improved yield stress and initial stiffness, compared with the pre-reinforced one and the experimental measurements/theoretical values of maximum stress ranged from 0.95 to 1.13 following reinforcement. There was little or no change depending on the maximum stress and tension in the specimen (D160, Class 240) whose neutral axis and upper part had anchoring devices mounted prior to reinforcement. Rather, the ductility decreased with the increasing tension. On the contrary, in the case of the other specimen (Class D120) whose neutral axis had anchoring devices mounted after reinforcement, both the maximum stress and ductility increased with increasing tension, which indicates that the latter tension reinforcement was reasonably appropriate and effective for the neutral axis reinforcement.

  • The seismic vulnerability analysis of multi-span bridges can be based on the response of the piers, provided that deck, bearings and foundations remain elastic. The lateral response of an RC bridge pier can be affected by different mechanisms (i.e., flexure, shear, lap-splice or buckling of the longitudinal reinforcement bars, second order effects). In the literature, simplified formulations are available for mechanisms different from the flexure. On the other hand, the flexural response is usually calculated with a numerically-based Moment-Curvature diagram of the base section and equivalent plastic hinge length. The goal of this paper is to propose a simplified analytical solution to obtain the Moment-Curvature relationship for hollow circular RC sections. This based on calibrated polynomials, fitted against a database comprising 720 numerical Moment-Curvature analyses. The section capacity curve is defined through the position of 6 characteristic points and they are based on four input parameters: void ratio of the hollow section, axial force ratio, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, transversal reinforcement ratio. A case study RC bridge pier is assessed with the proposed solution and the results are compared to a refined numerical FEM analysis, showing good match.

  • Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) applications in the structural engineering field include concrete-FRP composite systems, where FRP components are either attached to or embedded into concrete structures to improve their structural performance. This paper presents the results of an analytical study conducted using finite element model (FEM) to simulate the behavior of three-points load beam reinforced with GFRP and/or steel bars. To calibrate the FEM, a small-scale experimental program was carried out using six reinforced concrete beams with $200{\times}200mm$ cross section and 1000 mm length cast and tested under three point bending load. The six beams were divided into three groups, each group contained two beams. The first group was a reference beams which was cast without any reinforcement, the second group concrete beams was reinforced using GFRP, and the third group concrete beams was reinforced with steel bars. Nonlinear finite element simulations were executed using ANSYS software package. The difference between the theoretical and experimental results of beams vertical deflection and beams crack shapes were within acceptable degree of accuracy. Parametric study using the calibrated model was carried out to evaluate two parameters (1) effect of number and position of longitudinal main bars on beam behavior; (2) performance of concrete beam with composite longitudinal reinforcement steel and GFRP bars.

  • Deep reinforcement learning is an artificial intelligence algorithm that enables learners to select optimal behavior based on raw and, high-dimensional input data. A lot of research using this is being conducted to create an optimal movement path of a mobile robot in an environment in which obstacles exist. In this paper, we selected the Dueling Double DQN (D3QN) algorithm that uses the prioritized experience replay to create the moving path of mobile robot from the image of the complex surrounding environment. The virtual environment is implemented using Webots, a robot simulator, and through simulation, it is confirmed that the mobile robot grasped the position of the obstacle in real time and avoided it to reach the destination.

  • This study was conducted to identify the structural performance of the opening in a location close to the support point in the perforated beam system of steel beams. In addition, structural performance was determined through experiments on reinforced openings using vertical and horizontal steel plates. In the steel simple beam, it was found that the opening was in a position closer to the support point, half the height of the steel beam (D/2), which was more appropriate than the height of the steel beam (D). In addition, the reinforcement effect of horizontal steel plate was greater than that of vertical steel plate reinforcement. Structural performance was improved when there was no gap between openings and steel plates.

  • The stiffness evaluation of cracked base metal is of great guidance to fatigue crack reinforcement. By carrying out fatigue tests and numerical simulation of typical cracking details in steel box girder, the strain-degradation law of cracked base metal was analyzed and the relationship between base metal stress and its displacement (stiffness) was explored. The feasibility of evaluating the stress of cracked base metal based on the stress field at the crack tip was verified. The results demonstrate that the stiffness of cracked base metal shows the fast-to-slow degradation trend with fatigue cracking and the base metal at 50mm or more behind the crack tip basically lose its bearing capacity. Drilling will further accelerate stiffness degradation with the increase of hole diameters. The base metal stress has a negative linear relation with its displacement (stiffness), The stress of cracked base metal is also related to stress intensity factor and its relative position (distance, included angle) to the crack tip, through which the local stiffness can be effectively evaluated. Since the stiffness is not uniformly distributed along the cracked base metal, the reinforcement patch is suggested to be designed according to the stiffness to avoid excessive reinforcement for the areas incompletely unloaded.

  • This paper presents a study of reinforced earth model wall reinforced by geosynthetics subjected to vertical surcharge. 7 types of reinforced earth model wall were constructed in the model box($100cm{\times}140cm{\times}100cm$) to assess the deformation and stress behavior of model walls according to different tensile strength and laying number of reinforcement and surcharge pressures. 3 types of geosynthetics that have different tensile strength were used as reinforcement. The test was carried out by changing the number of reinforcement to 5, 7, 9, and surcharge pressure to 50, 100, 150, 200, 250 kPa. The model test found that the maximum lateral displacements occurred at the 0.7 H (H : Wall height) position from the bottom of the model wall and vertical stress was low in the smaller surcharge pressure and the larger tensile strength of reinforcement.

  • This study investigated the bond behavior between recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) concrete and deformed reinforcing bars. The position (i.e., vertical, horizontal) and the location (i.e., 375mm, 225mm and 75 mm) of deformed bar were considered as a main test parameter in this paper. From the test results, it was found that maximum bond strength of top reinforcement was decreased compared with that of bottom reinforcement. Also bar embedded horizontally 225mm above from base could not satisfy bond strength requirement provided in CEB-FIP code. It was caused by the fact that bonded area at the bottom of horizontal reinforcement was significantly reduced by the poring water and laitance. In this specimen, the bond strength provided by bearing stress and wedging action of concrete was not fully observed.

  • The design of column joint is an important part of earthquake resistant design of reinforced concrete moment resisting frames. Beam column joints must provide sufficient stiffness and strength to resist and sustain the loads induced by adjacent beams and columns. This paper investigates the difference of the current design codes which provide a different approach for the design of beam column joint in seismic zone. The model provided by Hitoshi Shiohara(1998) is reviewed in this paper, which provides a good relationship between moment and shear action of interior beam column joint and a role shear reinforcement according to their position.
