  • The study focuses on evaluating the bending creep performance of laminated veneer lumber (LVL) formwork in timber concrete composite (TCC) structures. Timber-framed construction is highlighted for its environmental benefits and seismic resistance, but limitations such as poor tensile strength and brittle failure in bending hinder its use in high-rise buildings. Wood-concrete hybrid structures, particularly those using reinforced concrete slabs with TCC floors, emerge as a potential solution. The research aims to understand the time-dependent behavior of TCC components, considering factors like wood and concrete shrinkage and connection creep. The experiment was conducted in western Japan on the TCC floor designed for use in the Kama-city Inatsuki-higashi compulsory education school. The LVL formwork, measuring 9,000 mm by 900 mm, and concrete is loaded onto it for testing. The creep test periods are examined using concrete loading. It employs a comprehensive creep analysis, adhering to Japanese standards, involving deflection measurements and regression analysis to estimate the creep coefficient. Results indicate substantial deformation after shoring removal, suggesting potential reinforcement needs. The study recommends extending test periods for improved accuracy and recognizing regional climate impacts. Overall, the research provides valuable insights into the potential of LVL formwork in TCC structures, emphasizing safety considerations and paving the way for further experimentation under varied conditions to validate structural integrity.

  • The purpose of this study was to present the possible use of a new standard impactor, the rubber ball (so-called, impact ball), and to assess its evaluation method as fur heavy-weight impact in multi-story residential buildings. Several experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of the impactor on noise propagation in reinforced concrete buildings. Then, the noise from the impact ball was psychoacoustically evaluated. (omitted)

  • The traditional destructive tests in damage detection require high cost, long consuming time, repairing of damaged members, etc. In addition to these, powerful equipments with advanced technology have motivated development of global vibration based damage detection methods. These methods base on observation of the changes in the structural dynamic properties and updating finite element models. The existence, location, severity and effect on the structural behavior of the damages can be identified by using these methods. The main idea in these methods is to minimize the differences between analytical and experimental natural frequencies. In this study, an application of damage detection using model updating method was presented on a one storey reinforced concrete (RC) building model. The model was designed to be 1/2 scale of a real building. The measurements on the model were performed by using ten uni-axial seismic accelerometers which were placed to the floor level. The presented damage identification procedure mainly consists of five steps: initial finite element modeling, testing of the undamaged model, finite element model calibration, testing of the damaged model, and damage detection with model updating. The elasticity modulus was selected as variable parameter for model calibration, while the inertia moment of section was selected for model updating. The first three modes were taken into consideration. The possible damaged members were estimated by considering the change ratio in the inertia moment. It was concluded that the finite element model calibration was required for structures to later evaluations such as damage, fatigue, etc. The presented model updating based procedure was very effective and useful for RC structures in the damage identification.

  • A risk assessment framework for evaluating building structures is implemented in this study. This framework allows considering sources of uncertainty both on structural capacity and seismic demand. In particular randomness on seismic load, incident angle, material properties, floor mass and structural damping are considered; in addition the choice of fibre modelling versus plastic hinge model is also considered as a source of uncertainty. The main objective of this work is to study the contribution of these sources of uncertainty on the fragilities of steel and steel-reinforced concrete composite 3D building structures. The fragility curves are expressed in the form of a two-parameter lognormal distribution where vertical statistics in conjunction with metaheuristic optimization are implemented for calculating the two parameters.

  • In this study, in order to. investigate the effectiveness af tuned liquid damper (TLD) for the seismic performance enhancement af the existing reinforced concrete (RC) apartment structure which is nat seismically designed, shaking table test was conducted for the small scale five stary RC structure with TLD. TLD model was constructed to. have the frequency tuned to. the first modal frequency af the structure, $2\%$ mass ratio. af the first modal mass, and 0.08 liquid depth ratio. White noise with $0.2\~5Hz$ frequency bandwidth tests were performed using the shaking table at Korea Institute af Machinery and Materials, and the displacement and absolute acceleration af each floor were measured. Test results indicate that mare than $30\%$ seismic responses reduction can be achieved using TLD for RC structure under white noise.

  • A common form of construction for apartment buildings consists of walls and coupling element. But, the structural behavior of coupling element are very complex and affected by the properties of coupling element. The propose of this paper is to evaluation the behavior of coupling element in wall-dominant system. An 1/2 scale three specimens was constructed and under cyclic loads. The specimen was consisted of opening walls and coupling element as well as floor slabs. From the result of this study, in coupling slabs, the stresses were not uniform across the width. And the effective width of coupling slabs was found smaller than the that of predicted from previous studies.

  • Recycled aggregate is an aggregate that satisfies the quality as an aggregate by crushing waste concrete and passing it through a separator. The government grants a floor area ratio of up to 15% and building height mitigation when more than 25% of the recycled building materials are used. In addition to environmental protection issues, it is necessary to actively utilize recycled aggregates that meet the standards to secure the business feasibility of buildings. This study attempted to derive the results according to the substitution rate by measuring the chloride ion diffusion characteristics based on the electrophoresis method.

  • Visco-elastic damping material for reducing heavy-weight floor impact noise and vibration in reinforced concrete structures was tested according to its thickness in the damping layer. The effect of damping material was compared with 20, 15, 10 and 5mm thickness. The wave propagation characteristics was measured for suggestion of an efficient method to reduce the floor impact noise. The method was proposed using the flexural wave propagation characteristics. The result showed that reduction of the thickness of damping layer made a slight difference; the natural frequency moved to higher frequency and the amplitude increased at low frequencies with 5mm thickness of damping material.

  • Currently, the multi-residential apartments used in Korea are mostly bearing wall apartments which don't satisfy consumers for the lack of architectural plan flexibility. And due to remodelling-incompatible, bearing wall apartments have to be reconstructed. It is, thus, necessary to develop multi-residential apartments utilizing composite beam that can replace the conventional bearing wall-type apartment buildings. Composite beams proposed in this paper ensure modification of space and quality control, while the floor heights are maintained at the same floor height as in bearing wall structures. This study analyzes the experimental behavior of composite beams with proper combination of structural steel, reinforced concrete, and precast concrete. By comparing with the theoretical analysis and experimental results, the accuracy of flexural moment capacity and neutral axis was evaluated. The experiments were performed by two simply-supported specimens using loading and unloading. When the analysis results were compared with the experimental results, the flexural moment capacity of the composite beam was shown with an error of approximately -0.5 to 0.1% at the maximum load limit state.
