Direct Inelastic Design of Reinforced Concrete Members Using Strut-and-Tie Model (스트럿-타이 모델을 이용한 철근콘크리트 부재의 직접 비탄성 설계)

  • In the previous study, direct inelastic strut-and-tie model (DISTM) was developed to perform inelastic design of reinforced concrete members by using linear analysis for their secant stiffness. In the present study, for convenience in design practice, the DISTM was further simplified so that inelastic design of reinforced concrete members can be performed by a run of linear analysis, without using iterative calculations. In the simplified direct inelastic strut-and-tie model (S-DISTM), a reinforced concrete member is idealized with compression strut of concrete and tension tie of reinforcing bars. For the strut and tie elements, elastic stiffness or secant stiffness is used according to the design strategy intended by engineer. To define the failure criteria of the strut and tie elements, concrete crushing and reinforcing bar fracture were considered. The proposed method was applied to inelastic design of various reinforced concrete members including deep beam, coupling beam, and shear wall. The design results were compared with the properties and the deformation capacities of the test specimens.

  • Experimental study is performed to investigate the variation of shear strength of reinforced concrete beams according to design parameters. The major parameters are loading condition, shear span-to-depth ratio, ratio of tensile longitudinal reinforcement, prestress and boundary rigidity.14 reinforced concrete beams without web reinforcement are tested under monotonic downward loading. The shear strength of the tested specimens were compared with the prediction by design code and Choi's method.

Predictions of curvature ductility factor of doubly reinforced concrete beams with high strength materials

  • The high strength materials have been more widely used in reinforced concrete structures because of the benefits of the mechanical and durable properties. Generally, it is known that the ductility decreases with an increase in the strength of the materials. In the design of a reinforced concrete beam, both the flexural strength and ductility need to be considered. Especially, when a reinforced concrete structure may be subjected an earthquake, the members need to have a sufficient ductility. So, each design code has specified to provide a consistent level of minimum flexural ductility in seismic design of concrete structures. Therefore, it is necessary to assess accurately the ductility of the beam sections with high strength materials in order to ensure the ductility requirement in design. In this study, the effects of concrete strength, yield strength of reinforcement steel and amount of reinforcement including compression reinforcement on the complete moment-curvature behavior and the curvature ductility factor of doubly reinforcement concrete beam sections have been evaluated and a newly prediction formula for curvature ductility factor of doubly RC beam sections has been developed considering the stress of compression reinforcement at ultimate state. Based on the numerical analysis results, the proposed predictions for the curvature ductility factor are verified by comparisons with other prediction formulas. The proposed formula offers fairly accurate and consistent predictions for curvature ductility factor of doubly reinforced concrete beam sections.

  • This paper provides an introduction to life-span simulation and numerical approach to support the performance design processes of reinforced concrete structures. An integrated computational system is proposed for life-span simulation of reinforced concrete. Conservation of moisture, carbon dioxide, oxygen, chloride, calcium and momentum is solved with hydration, carbonation, corrosion, ion dissolution. damage evolution and their thermodynamic/mechanical equilibrium. Coupled analysis of mass transport and damage mechanics associated with steel corrosion is presented for structural performance assessment of reinforced concrete. Multi-scale modeling of micro-pore formation and transport phenomena of moisture and ions are mutually linked for predicting the corrosion of reinforcement and volumetric changes. The interaction of crack propagation with corroded gel migration can also be simulated. Two finite element codes. multi-chemo physical simulation code (DuCOM) and nonlinear dynamic code of structural reinforced concrete (COM3) were combined together to form the integrated simulation system. This computational system was verified by the laboratory scale and large scale experiments of damaged reinforced concrete members under static loads, and has been applied to safety and serviceability assessment of existing structures. Based on the damage details predicted by the nonlinear finite element analytical system, the life-span-cost of RC structures including the original construction costs and the repairing costs for possible damage during the service life can be evaluated for design purpose.

  • An overall review of the structural behaviors of ultra-high-performance fiber-reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) elements subjected to various loading conditions needs to be conducted to prevent duplicate research and to promote its practical applications. Thus, in this study, the behavior of various UHPFRC structures under different loading conditions, such as flexure, shear, torsion, and high-rate loads (impacts and blasts), were synthetically reviewed. In addition, the bond performance between UHPFRC and reinforcements, which is fundamental information for the structural performance of reinforced concrete structures, was investigated. The most widely used international recommendations for structural design with UHPFRC throughout the world (AFGC-SETRA and JSCE) were specifically introduced in terms of material models and flexural and shear design. Lastly, examples of practical applications of UHPFRC for both architectural and civil structures were examined.

Size-Effect Analyses of Shear Behavior in Reinforced Concrete Beams (철근콘크리트 보의 전단거동의 크기효과 해석)

  • Shear failure of reinforced concrete beams is serious problem due to sudden brittle failure and many experimental results proved that size effect in shear behavior is an important feature of reinforced concrete members. For this reason, the structural safety of the reinforced concrete beams for shear has been checked by applying empirical design formula, which includes the size-effect, derived from experimental data. However, as the sizes of reinforced concrete members become extremely large, experiments sometimes become very difficult so that the formula or the experimental data could not be obtained and size-effect analyses of shear behavior become significant. In this study, size-effect analysis of shear behavior in reinforced concrete beams is performed by modeling tension stiffening/shear stiffening on reinforced concrete and the tension softening/shear softening on plain concrete. Then, the influences of models in the size-effect analyses of shear behavior in reinforced concrete beams are analyzed.

  • The existing design expressions for shear strength of reinforced concrete columns are lacking in consistent seismic design philosophy and very conservative. However, relatively not so many experiments have been conducted to verify the shear resisting mechanisms of columns. The previous researches concentrated on deriving an experimental model from their test results. So, there is a need to approach this problem from the analytical point of view to be balanced with the experimental effort. This paper presents a method of modeling reinforced concrete columns under seismic shear loading. Lower bound solutions are obtained by using an analogous truss model and concrete arch actions. This model agrees with the precedented test results by some margins.

  • Anti-tank weapons are among the infantry weapons used by the armies of many countries. Anti-tank rockets and explosives such as TNT, generally used for armour piercing, are also frequently used in terrorist attacks. These attacks damage the protection facilities built from reinforced concrete. Rockets or similar explosives' rapid speed and burst temperatures pierce reinforced concrete during strikes, resulting in casualties and damage to crucial strategic structures. This study aimed to devise an economic and applicable reinforced concrete plate that could absorb the impact of anti-tank rockets and Trinitrotoluene (TNT) type explosives. Therefore, 5 different samples, produced from C50 reinforced concrete and 150×150 cm in size, were formed by combining plates of different numbers and thicknesses. Also, a sample, which was a single thick plate, was prepared. In destructive testing, Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG-7) was used as the anti-tank rocket launcher. As a result of this study, the impact damage was reduced with hollow concrete plate geometries, and recommendations were developed for complete prevention.

Optimum Design of the Intake Tower of Reservoir(I) - With Application of Working Stress Design Method - (저수지 취수탑의 최적설계에 관한 연구(I) -허용능력 설계법을 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of the present study is to set up an efficient optimum design method for the large-scale reinforced concrete cylindrical shell structures like intake tower of reservoir and to establish a solid foundation for the automatic optimum structural design combined with finite element analysis. The major design variables are the dimensions and steel areas of each member of the structures. The construction cost which is composed of the concrete, steel, and form work costs, respectively, is taken as the objective function. The constraint equations for the design of intake-tower are derived on the basis of the working stress design method. The corresponding design guides including the standard specification for concrete structures have been also employed in deraving the constraint conditions. The present nonlinear optimization problem is solved by SUMT method. The reinforced concrete intake-tower is decomposed into three major substructures. The optimization is then conducted for both the whole structure and the substructures. The following conclusions can be drawn from the present study. 1. The basis of automatic optimum design of reinforced concrete cylindrical shell structures which is combined with finite element analysis was established. 2. The efficient optimization algorithms which can execute the automatic optimum desigh of reinforced concrete intake-tower based on the working stress design method were developed. 3. Since the objective function and design variables were converged to their optimum values within the first or second iteration, the optImization algorithms developed in this study seem to be efficient and stable. 4. The difference in construction cost between the optimum designs with the substructures and with the entire structure was found to be small and thus the optimum design with the substructures,rnay conveniently be used in practical design. 5. The major active constraints of each structural member were found to be the tensile stress insteel for salb, the minimum lonitudinal steel ratio constraints for tower body and the shearing stress in concrete, tensile stress in steel and maximum eccentricityconstraints for footing, respectively. 6. The computer program develope in the present study can be effectively used even by an unexperienced designer for the optimum design of reinforced concrete intake-tower.

  • Partially prestressed concrete members are concrete members reinforced with a combination of prestressed and non-prestressed reinforcement, and also can offer advantages of reinforced concrete. The objective of this study is to develop a design program using Visual Basic language according to the limit state design method which controls crack and check fatigue effectively for partially concrete members.
