  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the strength and ductility improvement of columns retrofitted with Fiber-Steel Composite Plate, compared with Steel Plate, and Carbon Fiber Sheet. Test specimens strengthened with 3 different materials--- carbon fiber sheet, steel plate and fiber-steel composite plate --- were tested under cyclic lateral force and a constant axial load equal to $20\%$ of the column's axial load capacity. The hypothetical equivalent value of the strengthening among three materials is introduced to evaluate.

  • Fragility and loss functions are developed to predict damage and economic losses due to earthquake loading in Reinforced Concrete (RC) structural components with smooth rebars. The attention is focused on external/internal beam-column joints and ductile/brittle weak columns, designed for gravity loads only, using low-strength concrete and plain steel reinforcing bars. First, a number of damage states are proposed and linked deterministically with commonly employed methods of repair and related activities. Results from previous experimental studies are used to develop empirical relationships between damage states and engineering demand parameters, such as interstory and column drift ratios. Probability distributions are fit to the empirical data and the associated statistical parameters are evaluated using statistical methods. Repair costs for damaged RC components are then estimated based on detailed quantity survey of a number of pre-70 RC buildings, using Italian costing manuals. Finally, loss functions are derived to predict the level of monetary losses to individual RC components as a function of the experienced response demand.

  • This paper presents an experimental study on socket base connections of precast reinforced concrete columns. The main purpose of this study is to determine socket base connection which has the closest behavior to monolithic casted column-base joints. For this purpose, six specimens having different column-socket base connection details were tested under cyclic loading. For each test, strength, stiffness, ductility and drift ratios of the specimens were determined. Test results indicated that a suggested connection type is 10%-30% stronger than the other type of connections under lateral loading. The welded connection (PC-5) had better lateral load carrying capacity and ductility. On the other hand, performance of standard connection (PC-1) which is commonly used in construction was weaker than other connections. Thus, decision of connection type should be referred not only performance but also applicability.

  • As concrete is most usable material in construction industry it's been required to improve its quality. Nowadays, nanotechnology offers the possibility of great advances in construction. For the first time, the nonlinear buckling of straight concrete columns armed with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) resting on foundation is investigated in the present study. The column is modelled with Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. The characteristics of the equivalent composite being determined using the Mori-Tanaka model. The foundation around the column is simulated with spring and shear layer. Employing nonlinear strains-displacements, energy methods and Hamilton's principal, the governing equations are derived. Differential quadrature method (DQM) is used in order to obtain the buckling load of structure. The influences of volume percent of SWCNTs, geometrical parameters, elastic foundation and boundary conditions on the buckling of column are investigated. Numerical results indicate that reinforcing the concrete column with SWCNTs, the structure becomes stiffer and the buckling load increases with respect to concrete column armed with steel.

  • According to current design provisions for shear strength of reinforced concrete slabs, critical slab sections around columns should be modified in the presence of openings in slabs to consider the effect of openings on the shear strength of slabs. Although the method of estimating the ineffective part of critical section due to openings are explained in codes, the real math for calculating it is somewhat complex and cumbersome. This paper classifies different cases of the location and geometry of columns and openings, respectively, and derives corresponding equations for estimating ineffective part of critical section for each case.

  • The stress-strain curve of concrete confined with both lateral ties and carbon fiber sheet(CFS) is different to that of concrete confined with only lateral ties or CFS. The objective of this study is to investigate the stress-strain relation of reinforced concrete columns confined by composite material. The main variable of the specimens was the content rate of lateral ties to CFS. In the test a total 24 rectangular specimens, which are all 148$\times$148$\times$300mm size. The test results indicated that while the compressive strength of specimens confined with both lateral ties and CFS increased proportionally to the aided amount of two materials, the maximum strain of specimens depended on the larger strain of lateral ties or CFS.

  • It has been known that lab splices of the longitudinal reinforcement steel in bridge columns are not desirable for seismic performance, but it is sometimes unavoidable. Lap splices were usually be located in the plastic hinge region of most bridge columns that were constructed before the adoption of the seismic design provision of Korea Bridge Design Specification on 1992. This research is to evaluate the seismic performance of reinforced concrete bridge piers with lap splicing of longitudinal reinforcement in the plastic hinge region, and to develop the enhancement scheme of their seismic capacity by retrofitting with steel bands. It was observed that RC bridge specimens with lap-spliced longitudinal steels appeared to fail at low curvature and displacement ductility, but significant improvement was appeared in the ductility of RC specimens with steel bands retrofitted around the plastic hinge region.

  • The flexural strength and ductility capacity of reinforced concrete columns are largely dependent on the amount of transverse steel. However, current design code does not specify the confinement effect of transverse steels in strength calculation. A non-linear moment-curvature analysis of RC column sections was conducted in order to develop PM interaction diagram considering transverse reinforcement effects. In this paper, a more reasonable application method of PM interaction diagram considering transverse steel amounts is introduced and proposed, based on moment-curvature non-linear analysis. Also, we proposed simplified method to use. easily in practical design.

  • This paper presents an experimental study on the behavior of high strength concrete columns confined by rectangular ties under combined axial load lateral load. This test was carried on the twelve reinforced concrete columns with $200\times200\times200$mm size subjected to combined axial load and lateral load. Effects of key variables such as the axial load level, the tie yield strength, the longitudinal reinforcement ratio are studied in this research program. The results of this study show that the efficiency of high strength lateral ties increase under high axial load level over 0.4f(아래첨자) A(아래 첨자). Also we found that well confined concrete column shows second peak monent after spalling of cover concrete under high axial load level.

  • A moment-curvature relationship to simulate the behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) columns under cyclic loading is introduced. Unlike previous moment4curvature models and the layered section approach, the proposed model takes into account the bond-slip effect by using a monotonic moment-curvature relationship constructed on the basis of the bond-slip relation and corresponding equilibrium equation at each nodal point. In addition, the use of curved unloading and reloading branches inferred from the stress-strain relation of steel gives more exact numerical result. The pinching effect caused by axial force is considered with an assumption that the absorbing energy corresponding to any deformation level maintains constant regardless of the magnitude of applied axial lone. The advantages of the proposed model, comparing to layered section approach, may be on the reduction in calculation time and memory space in case of its application to large structures. Finally, correlation studies between analytical result and experimental studies are conducted to establish the validity of the proposed model.
