  • A regional wind network with complex surface conditions must be designed with sufficient space and time resolution to resolve the local circulations. In this study, the spatial variations of the wind field observed in the Seoul and Jeju regional networks were evaluated in terms of annual, seasons, and months to assess the spatial homogeneity of wind fields within the regional networks. The coherency of the wind field as a function of separation distance between stations indicated that significant coherency was sometimes not captured by the network, as inferred by low correlations between adjacent stations. A meso-velocity scale was defined in terms of the spatial variability of the wind within the network. This problem is predictably most significant with weak winds, dull prevailing wind, clear skies and significant topography. The relatively small correlations between stations imply that the wind at a given point cannot be estimated by interpolating winds from the nearest stations. For the Seoul and Jeju regional network, the meso-velocity scale has typically a same order of magnitude as the speed of the network averaged wind, revealing the large spatial variability of the Jeju network station imply topography and weather. Significant scatter in the relationship between spatial variability of the wind field and the wind speed is thought to be related to thermally-generated flows. The magnitude of the mesovelocity scale was significantly different along separation distance between stations, wind speed, intensity of prevailing wind, clear and cloudy conditions, topography. Resultant wind vectors indicate much different flow patterns along condition of contributing factors. As a result, the careful considerations on contributing factors such as prevailing wind in season, weather, and complex surface conditions with topography and land/sea contrast are required to assess the spatial variations of wind field on a regional network. The results in the spatial variation from the mesovelocity scale are useful to represent the characteristics of regional wind speed including lower surface conditions over the grid scale of large scale atmospheric model.

  • Ecological risk assessment (ERA) has been used to establish environmental quality standards or evaluate ecological risk in site-specific areas. The scope of ERA was expanded based on regions, and the concept of regional-scale ecological risk assessment was recently introduced in developed countries. In the present study, regional ERA approaches of relative risk model (RRM), contaminants in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems (CATS) model, and procedure for ecological tired assessment of risks (PETAR) in advanced countries were extensively investigated. Regional ERA was compared with traditional ERA process. Stressors, receptor and response in traditional ERA were replaced with sources of stressors, habitats, and ecological impacts, respectively in regional ERA. This study introduces the concept and assessment process of regional ERA, and provides a wide perspective how the relative ERA could be applied in Korean ecosystem.

  • Regional innovation capabilities have been regarded as essential in developing regional economy. Many regional governments all over the world have been pouring great efforts to increase their regional innovation capabilities. In these days, this trend has been prevailed among Korean regional governments. In line with the active support of the central government, Korean regional governments have started their own regional innovation policies. This paper aims at discussing a regional government`s efforts in enhancing its innovation capabilities. As a representative region, we select Kyunggi Province, because it is one of the most advanced regions in Korea. We discuss Kyunggi Province`s innovation promotion efforts in terms of organization, budget, and programs. According to our analysis, the Kyunggi`s provincial government increased its innovation capabilities to a large scale. It has extended its S&T promotion organization, increased its R&D budget to a large scale, and increased its R&D promotion programmes and even initiated its own programs.

  • Through the regional lineament analysis in Korea peninsula, the statistical distribution of regional lineament is investigated. We also analyze the lineaments pattern using the fractal dimension. These results are the preliminary study for a understanding of the deep ground geological structure in Korea. For the investigations of the average block scale, we use the Dershowitz and Herda(1992)'s method. At result, the average spacing between the regional lineaments is about 10km.

  • Background and Objetive : Lack of uniformity in reporting facial nerve recovery in patients with facial nerve paralysis has been a major disadvantage in comparing treatment modalities. The objective evaluation of facial nerve function is a complex procedure. The House and Brackmann grading system, the Yanagihara grading system has been recommend as a universal standard for assessing the degree of facial nerve palsy. However, clinical studies for treatment of facial palsy have rarely used this universal standard in oriental medicine. That is the reason for analysing this facial nerve grading system. Material and Method : We choose 10 scales reported from 1955 till 1995. These facial nerve grading systems may be classified as Gross system, Regional system and Specific system. Result and Conculsion : The scales of Botmann and Jonkees, May, Peitersen, and House and Brackmann are the gross facial nerve grading systems with which we grossly assess the facial motor dysfunction and the secondary defect. Among these scales, H-B scale is the most widespred The scales of Yanagihara(若杉文吉), Smith, Adour and Swanson, Jassen, FEMA are the regional facial nerve grading system in which we weight, or unweight the facial motor dysfunction and the secondary defect. For example, the scales of Yanagihara(若杉文吉) and Smith are the unweighted regional scale, the scale of Adour and Swanson, Jassen, FEMA are the weighted regional grading system. The scale of Stennert is the Specific facial nerve grading system in which we respectively assess the grade of facial dysfunction at rest, in motion and the secondary defect. For the objective evaluation of the oriental medicine treatment for facial palsy, we must use the universal standard scale, i.e. the H-B scale, the Yanagihara scale.

  • Purpose: The companies must be located in the area, scale up, create jobs, and return to the local economy. This paper attempted to analyze empirically the relationship between regional context and entrepreneurial orientation(EO) in the region of Korea. Methods: This paper analyzed survey data and regional statistics. We measured EO by region and then examined which regional context affect EO. Regional contexts were measured by population, economic size, budget size, firm size, innovation capacity, and education level. EO was measured by innovativeness, risk taking, proactiveness, autonomy, competitive aggressiveness, and need for achievement. Results: EO was high in the region where the budget size per thousand population, the number of manufacturers per thousand population, the number of new corporations per thousand population, the number of R&D personnel per thousand population, and the number of students of higher education institutions per thousand population were high. Conclusion: The implications of this paper are that regional context affect EO, and there are differences in budget scale, firm size, innovation capacity, and education level. In regions with many investment resources for innovation and startups and manufacturers, the number of R&D personnel and students of higher education institutions (future R&D personnel), in particular, determines EO.

  • This study aims to analyze empirically the scale of region that has been covered in "The Journal of the Korean Geographical Society(대한지리학회지)" and "The Journal of the Korean Association of Regional Geographers(한국지역지리학회지)" over the last 20 years. Generally speaking, it was found that "The Journal of the Korean Geographical Society" has published a relatively more number of articles with larger scale of region and "The Journal of the Korean Association of Regional Geographers" has published more articles with smaller scale of region than the counterpart journal. Also, this study has revealed that the ratio of the studies in both journals utilizing both town/village scale(읍 면 스케일) and city/county scale(시 군 스케일) has increased continuously with marginal fluctuations. On the other hand, the ratio of the studies in both journals combining single metropolis/province scale(시 도 스케일), multiple metropolis/province scale(시 도보다 큰 스케일), and state scale(국가 스케일) has decreased continuously in general. In sum, this study is expected to offer useful data as well as future research direction to the Korean geographers.

  • Small-scale reactors have recently attracted attention as a potential power generation source for the future. The Regional Energy Research Institute for Next Generation is currently developing a small-scale reactor called Regional Energy rX 10 MVA (REX-10). The current paper deals with a power system to be used with small-scale reactors for multi-purpose regional energy systems. This small nuclear system can supply electric and thermal energy like a co-generation system. The electrical model of the REX-10 has been developed as a part of the SCADA system. REX-10's dynamic and electromagnetic performance on the power system is analyzed. Simulations are carried out on a test system based on Ulleung Island's power system to validate REX-10 availability on a power system. RSCAD/RTDS and PSS/E software tools are used for the simulation.
