  • The design parameters to affect the cooling capacity of a cryocooler were examined with the application of numerical modeling to optimize an inertance pulse tube cryocooler. This modeling includes the regenerator, pulse tube, inertance tube, gas reservoir, and heat exchangers. One-dimensional modeling on strings of acoustic and thermoacoustic elements was applied to compare the design parameters. The diameter and length of the pulse tube can significantly affect the cooling capacity and efficiency. The aftercooler was optimized by maintaining a certain size. The efficiency also improved as the length of inertance tube and volume of gas reservoir are increased. It was confirmed that effective design parameters are critical to the performance of an inertance pulse tube cryocooler considering the comparison of the dimensions of each part to optimize its cooling power and efficiency.

  • A free piston and free displacer (FPFD) Stirling cryocooler for cooling infrared and cryo-sensor is currently under development at korea Institute of Machinery & Materials. The FPFD Stirling cryocooler consists of two compressor pistons driven by linear motors which make pressure waves and a pneumatically driven displacer piston with regenerator. It is the most suitable design for a mechanical cryocooler utilized in night vision environment In this study, performance test of the Stirling cryocooler with different length of the split tube and operating frequency were performed to get characteristics of the cryocooler.

  • A Stirling cryocooler is relatively compact, reliable, commercially available, and uses helium as a working fluid. The FPFD stirling cryocooler consists of two compressor pistons driven by linear motors which makes pressure waves and a pneumatically driven displacer piston with regenerator. A free piston and free displacer(FPFD) Stirling cryocooler for cooling infrared and cryo-sensors is currently under development at KIMM(Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials). In order to evaluate the feasibility of using a linear motor driving cryocooler, prototype Stirling cryocooler with a nominal cooling capacity of 0.5W at 80K was designed, fabricated and tested. The prototype has achieved no load temperature of 51K and cooling power of 0.33W.

  • This paper investigates the thermal storage performance of the office building which has adopted an air conditioning system with its slab structure as a regenerator. Four cases of the thermal storage performance experiment were conducted. Room air temperatures, floor slab temperatures, temperatures around the air conditioning unit were logged and analyzed. The load handling capacity of the air conditioning unit and the amount of heat stored in the slab were decided from those experiments. Several efficiencies were investigated to evaluate the performance of the thermal storage. The results concluded that the slab as a regenerator is very effective in cutting down peak loads of the office building.

  • A 3 valve-type pulse tube refrigerator optains its cooling effect from pressure drop by releasing the part of the charged gas through hot end nozzle. The objective of this study is to analyze the performance and to find an optimal expansion pressure of the 3 valve-type pulse tube refrigerator. It is assumed that gas lumps are not mixed and periodically repeat the adiabatic compression and expansion processes. And the nodal model is applied for the analysis of the regenerator. As the result of analysis, the optimum pressure at the end of expansion process was about 80-90% of the maximum pressure.

  • Recently, much attention has been paid to utilizing highly preheated air up to $1,000^{\circ}C$ through waste gas in industrial furnaces. The regenerative burner technology has shown to provide significant reduction in energy consumption (up to 60%), downsizing of the equipment (about 30%) and lower emissions (about 30%) while maintaining high thermal performance of the system since 2000. The object of this study is to develop the flameless regenerative burner for industrial furnaces based on the FLOX(Flameless Oxidation) principle and it has been designed and manufactured as pilot scale. Performance tests are experimentally done and their results are discussed. They showed 1) a very good uniformity in temperature distribution, 2) about 100 ppm in NOx at the temperature $1,300^{\circ}C$, 3) about 95% in temperature efficiency. Besides, the regenerative burner has advantage in easy maintenance and high usage rate of regenerator due to the separate and portable type of heat exchanger.

  • This paper treats the temperature effectiveness of the two-fluid counterflow regenerator in a rotary type. To avoid continual interpolation and to obtain the simple result in calculating that, it obtained the particular solution for the direct-transfer-type counterflow heat exchanger by the graphical procedures. Also, it introduced the empirical formula for the influence of the ratio of rotor matrix to minimum working fluid heat capacity rate with the particular solution induced. Particularly, substituting the published results of temperature effectiveness into the program, it obtained the simple and convenient equation which can applicate in the counterflow regenerator in a rotary type. To compare and discuss the results induced, selecting the regenerative air preheater and applying the their running datum and specifications to the related results, it shows that the above results are agree with the published results within absolute relative error, 3.0%.

It is the most suitable design for a mechanical cryocooler utilized in night vision environment. In order to get optimum operating frequency, natural frequency of piston and displacer, optimum phase angle between piston and displacer, cooling capacity, performance tests of the Stirling cryocooler by the frequency characteristics were performed.

  • A distributed nonlinear mathematical model for investigation of regenerative heat exchangers of both a continuous and periodic operation is described in the paper. The non-iterative numerical integration scheme for conjugate unsteady heat exchange problem of one dimensional flows and two dimensional matrix wall conductivity is developed. Case study of a regenerative heat exchanger with a rotary ceramic matrix is presented. The range of optimum rotation rates of the regenerator providing the greatest calorific efficiency is determined.

  • A design method has been developed for a Stirling engine with a tubular heater and cooler and a screen type regenerator. This paper provides a design procedure to determine the thermodynamic states and the geometric configurations of the Stirling engine for residential heat pumps. The major design is concerned with the working spaces, i.e. compression and expansion spaces and the heat exchangers such as the heater, the cooler and the regenerator. The Schmidt analysis has been employed to obtain the mass flow rates and heat transfer requirements of the system. The performance analysis of a model Stirling engine was performed by Martini-Weiss program to prove the validity of this design method. The results obtained indicate that this design method is valid for the Stirling engine conceptual design and performance analysis.
