In this study, pre-service science teachers' web-based reflective journals were analyzed. During four weeks teaching practicum, they were guided to post at least two reflective journals in a week on the Web bulletin board system. Finally, 307 web-based reflective journals written by 23 pre-service teachers were selected, and the domain and the level of reflective thinking were analyzed. As a result, pre-service science teachers' reflective journals were mostly related with teaching science, i.e., preparing and reflecting their own instruction, and the frequencies of these domains increased with the process of teaching practicum. Reflective journals about school administrative system, informal teaching practice, student guidance, and personal feeling were also included. The level of reflective thinking of 179 journals about teaching science were analyzed further. There were 53 (29.6%) journals including reflective thinking, but the higher level of reflection (professional reflection and critical reflection) was rare. The perceptions of pre-service science teachers on web-based reflective journal writing were also surveyed.
Currently, reflective teaching has been actively studied in terms of teachers' professional development relating to classroom instruction. The present study looked at, using the method of a case study, the differences between a novice and an experienced elementary school mathematics teachers' beliefs demonstrated during their reflective teaching. The findings of the study show that at the intial stage of reflective teaching, the novice teacher identified few errors during class and was not enthusiastic about applying the results of her reflective teaching due to lack of confidence. By contrast, the experienced teacher identified more errors during class than the novice teacher and had fewer reflections due to a sense of confidence. As the teachers' engagement in reflective teaching increased with time, they both felt the need for advice from experts on mathematics teaching and directed their attention to interactions with their students away from teacher-centered instruction. Further, the novice teacher engaged in more teacher-student interactions than the experienced teacher, and the experienced teacher increased the frequency of teaching reflection. Based on the findings, the article suggests a number of implications for the cooperative reflective teaching between novice and experienced teachers and the improvement of classroom instruction.
The purpose of this study is to study how effective teachers' self reflectiveness are on enhancing mathematics teaching activities. Researcher is the object of the study and relating preceding researches, establish some instruments for study. This research was examined for six times from fifth week of March to second week of May. In order to accomplish this study, one class of the first grade of high school in Ulsan was selected. In order to define the changes of teaching activity, the first lecture was practiced without analyzing or reflective activity. From the second lecture, analyze and reflect own teaching activity with recording. After finishing all lecture, distribute the recordings to observers and other teachers and then, get measured. Based on the results, self reflective teaching makes great effects on enhancing teachers' teaching activities. Through teachers' own reflective teaching, they can know their advantages and disadvantages, repeatable was of speaking, and the acknowledgement of objectives. And, finally, they can enhance their teaching activity by reflective teaching.
In this study, the researcher aimed to increase productive reflection of pre-service elementary teachers through reflective journal writing and discussion after science peer teaching practice. 'Productive reflection' involves consideration and analysis of interrelationships among aspects of teaching including learners and learning, subject matter knowledge, assessment, and instruction. During 8 week efforts, productive reflection has increased gradually in both individual journal and class discussion. However half of individual journals didn't show productive reflection even in the final stage. This implicated that development of reflective thinking is an achievable but progressive change. By describing the progress in discussion and participants' responses on journal writing and discussion activity, this study shed light on practical ways of enhancing reflective teacher education.
The purpose of this study is to identify the types of professional teaching practice of Home Economics teachers who are working at Korean secondary school for changing their professional teaching practice and developing home economics curriculum. A mail questionnaire, Professional Teaching Practice(PTP) was used to survey randomly selected 525 Home Economics teachers. The professional teaching practices examined were customary-instrumental, interactive and reflective practices. Customary-instrumental practice was the predominant type of professional teaching practice used by Home Economics teachers. About 26% of the teachers used reflective practice, and 14.67% used interactive practice. Only the number of students was significantly related to their professional teaching practices. Five influential factors on teaching practices identified by Home Economics teachers emerged in the following order: examination-centered educational system, lack of class hours, lack of resource materials and facilities, demands from the Ministry of Education, school administrators, or parents, and large class sizes.
For decades, reflection has been recognised as a meaningful tool to bring forth teachers' ownership as well as knowledge and action empowerment in teacher education. Yet there have been few studies on elementary teachers' reflection on their science teaching in Korea. In this study, 71 reflective journals of 24 elementary teachers on their science teaching were analyzed. The characteristics of reflective journals were analyzed in terms of 'productive reflection', a concept suggested by Davis (2006). Unproductive reflection is mainly descriptive without analysis, whereas productive reflection can promote teachers' learning by integrating four aspects of teaching (learner/learning, subject matter knowledge, instruction and assessment). The result showed what elementary teachers consider and emphasize and how they integrate their ideas. Most of reflective journals included aspects of 'instruction', 'learner/learning', and 'subject matter knowledge'. However 'instruction' was emphasized most frequently (69.0%) than 'subject matter knowledge' (33.8%) and 'learner/learning' (26.8%). 'Assessment' was hardly included nor emphasized. More than half of the journals (56.3%) showed no integrations, which were unproductive reflection. A third of the journals (32.4%) integrated only two aspects among four. Average score of integrations was 1.6 on a scale of 4 points. The integrations were not affected by the length of reflective journals and the teaching experience. These findings suggest that productive reflection would not increase naturally with teaching experience and there needs more tactful guidance to develop elementary teachers' productive reflection on their science teaching.
In this study, the researcher aimed to increase productive reflection of pre-service elementary teachers through meta-analysis of their own reflective journals. The meta-analysis activities are expected to enhance their learning effectively as a kind of self-assesment. During 8 week simulation teaching, 26 pre-service teachers kept individual journal writing and the meta-analysis activities were implemented twice (after the 3rd and 8th week). Right after the first meta-analysis, the pre-service teachers' productive reflection increased clearly. However this would not guarantee the effect would last long time period. By analyzing 8 week reflective journals, reports on meta-analysis activities and small group interview, this study shed light on practical ways of enhancing reflective teacher education.
The purpose of teacher education is to improve the professionalism of teachers above the current level. The type of teacher education to improve the professionalism of experienced teachers is broadly divided into top-down education and bottom-up education. So far, studies on top-down education were commonly conducted in the field of Korean language education. However, there has been an increasing number of studies emphasizing the need for bottom-up education, driven by the voluntary participation of teachers in recent years. The purpose of this study is to suggest the direction of reflective teacher education for experienced Korean language teachers. For this purpose, a survey was conducted of 71 Korean language teachers who had more than 5 years of experience. The contents of the survey consisted of opinions regarding existing teacher education, the need for reflective teacher education, and the perception of teaching professionalism. The results showed that experienced Korean language teachers had a positive perception of the existing teacher re-education experience. Also, 91% of the respondents said they intend to participate in the reflective teacher education program. In particular, respondents showed high demands for 'peer coaching', 'peer observation', and 'teaching portfolios' among reflective teacher education programs. Lastly, many respondents selected 'development and utilization of teaching materials', 'encouraging learner's utterances', and 'leading learner's interest and motivation' as sub-elements of teaching professionalism that they wish to improve through teacher re-education.
The purpose of this research is to apprehend what the power of professional learning community (PLC) to make home economics teachers participate is and how PLC activity contributes to reflective practice and change of participating home economics teachers by experiencing reflective practices. For this, self-reflective action research of Kemmis and McTaggart was conducted. Six home economics teachers participated voluntarily and totally 18 PLC sessions from May 31, 2013 to May 19, 2014 were held. Two themes of 'looking in classes' as a main practice theme and 'designing classes together' as a supporting theme were carried. Findings and conclusions of this study are as following. First, participants of PLC to get data and information on teaching and to solve problems with fellow teachers for better classes at first. However, they have become to comfort and sympathize each other about difficulties in school as home economics teachers. Second, through the PLC activity, they found they had uncomfortable belief about teaching and tried to practice solutions by critical and reflective thinking. Third, they put efforts in finding alternative framework of looking inside their classes for the fundamental improvement in teaching. For this, they formulated questionnaire to describe their own reflective practice through the alternative framework from a critical perspective in teaching, a view of student's learning, and a teacher's inner view for improvement of practice. Fourth, PLC activity for a year allowed them to combine theory and reality though reflective process by designing classes together and reflectively practicing them in classes.

The purpose of this study is to analyze changes of competency observed in teaching of pre-service science teachers through the teaching evaluation and reflective journal writings on science class during the period of student-teaching at high school. To do this, we videotaped all the science classes of six pre-service teachers participating in this study, evaluated their class teachings, and collected moving video clips recorded in their classes, reflective journals, interviews, instructional materials, and teaching evaluation they have provided. From the "Standards for teaching evaluation of science instruction" developed by Korea Education Curriculum and Assessment, sixteen evaluation elements were selected and used for the analysis. According to our results, all preservice teachers show improvement of teaching performance in most of the class evaluation elements as the number of science classes increases. They presented the lowest improvement in the 'to design meaningful learning program,' which was one of the sixteen elements. However, there are substantial individual differences in the pre-service teachers' teaching competence on each evaluation element. Although they thought that 'understanding of scientific concepts' is the most important part of a science class in the beginning of student-teaching training, they showed changes in recognition that 'interaction and respect' and 'managing student behaviors' are also important in the end. They have recognized that writing a reflective journal, based on the video clips recorded in class and teaching evaluation, helps improve their teaching competency. In addition, improvement in teaching competency has influence upon career-orientation towards the school teacher in the future.
