  • Subroutines to enable fast and accurate generation of water properties-enthalpy, specific volume, viscosity, thermal conductivity and saturation entropy-which are usually basic requirements for nuclear calculation of LWR, have been developed. The sources of data were quoted from “ASME Steam Tables (1967)” and their Revision (1975). It is ensured that the obtained values from this routine fall within 0.2% difference compared with the reference data, in the ranges of temperature and pressure for LWR nuclear calculation.

  • Isotopic analysis using thermal ionization mass spectrometry coupled with scanning electron microscopy (SEM-TIMS) was performed to determine the isotopic ratios of uranium contained in micro-particles in the 6th Nuclear Signatures Interlaboratory Measurement Evaluation Programme (NUSIMEP-6) sample. Elemental analysis by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) was conducted on uranium-bearing mirco-particles, which were transferred to rhenium filaments for TIMS loading using a micromanipulation system in a SEM. A multi-ion-counter system was utilized to detect the ion signals of the four isotopes of uranium simultaneously. The isotope ratios of uranium corrected by bracketing using a reference material showed excellent agreement with the certified values. The measurement accuracy for $n(^{234}U)/n(^{238}U)$ and (b) $n(^{235}U)/n(^{238}U)$ was 10% and 1%, respectively, which met the requirements for qalification for the NetWork of Analytical Laboratories (NWAL).

  • Daegu Solar Power Tower Plant of a 200 kW thermal capacity uses an open air receiver. An air receiver is generally based on the volumetric receiver concept with porous ceramic absorbers. Because absorber material is important in the volumetric receiver, ceramic materials with excellent thermal conductivity, high solar absorptivity and good thermal stability have been researched. KIER also developed SiC honeycomb absorber modules and evaluated performance of the modules at the KIER solar furnace. For performance evaluation, we made an open volumetric receiver containing the modules and measured the outlet temperature and the efficiency. It is demonstrated that performance of the KIER absorber is comparable to that of a reference absorber developed by DLR.

  • According to the Fourth Assessment Report of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change(IPCC) Working Group III, climate change is already in progress around the world, and it is necessary to execute mitigation in order to minimize adverse impacts. This paper suggests future climate change needs, employing IPCC Special Report on Emissions Scenarios(SRES) to predict temperature rises over the next 100 years. This information can be used to develop sustainable architecture applications for energy efficient buildings and renewable energy. Such climate changes could also affected the present supplies of renewable energy sources. This paper discusses one recent Fourth Assessment Report of IPCC (Mitigation of Climate Change) and the Hadley Centre climate simulation of relevant data series for South Korea. Result of this research may improve consistency and reliability of simulation weather data or climate change in order to take advantage of SRES and PRECIS QUMP. It is expected that these calculated test reference years will be useful to the designers of solar energy systems, as well as those who need daily solar radiation data for South Korea. Also, those results may contribute zero carbon and design of sustainable architecture establishing future typical weather data that should be gone ahead to energy efficient building design using renewable energy systems.

  • This paper proposes an energy efficient ECG monitoring system by putting some intelligence on the sensor node to reduce the number of transmissions. The sensor node is mostly put into the processing mode and just connects the base station when necessary. Therefore, the transmission energy is greatly reduced while the energy for processing is increased a little bit. Our proposed ECG analysis method classifies ECG cycles by computing the Euclidean distance between the sensed ECG cycle and the reference ECG cycle. This work is a detailed and full explanation of our former work. Extended experimental results show that the proposed trade is very effective in saving energy and the Euclidean distance based classification method is accurate. Furthermore, the PowerTOSSIM energy simulation method is also demonstrated as very accurate in evaluating the energy consumption of the sensor node in our application scenario.

  • This paper deals with the effect of lightning impulse current on electrical characteristics of ZnO blocks used in distribution lightning arrester. The electrical characteristics of ZnO blocks are degraded by overtime impulse current, and the degraded ZnO block is brought to a thermal runaway and finally destroyed. It is therefore important to estimate the change of electrical characteristics of ZnO blocks. In this study, an impulse current generator which can produce 8/20$[\mus]$, 3[㎄] and 4/10$[\mus]$, 5[㎄] waveform is designed and fabricated to simulate the lightning impulse current of power systems. Total energy applied to the ZnO blocks at each time is 739[J] in 8/20$[\mus]$, and 523[J] in 4/10$[\mus]$, impulse current, respectively. From the experimental results, the 3rd harmonic of the leakage current increases continuously with the number of applied impulse current, but no significant changes in residual voltage and in reference voltage are observed until the ZnO block is destroyed. Also, it is confirmed that the main factor on degradation of ZnO blocks is rather the total energy applied to ZnO blocks than the peak value of the impulse current.

  • This paper presents the results of an experimental program concerning the efficiency of a specific strengthening technique which utilizes a small steel link element connected to the R/C frame through bracing elements. Brittle types of failure, especially at the connections between steel and concrete elements, can be avoided by appropriate design of the local details. Five single storey one bay R/C frames scaled 1:3 were constructed according to older codes with substandard details. The first one was a typical bare reference frame. The other four were identical to the first one, strengthened by steel bracing elements. The behavior of the strengthened frames is described with respect to the reference bare frame. The concrete frames were constructed according to older code provisions by the use of smooth steel bars, low strength concrete, sparsely spaced stirrups and substandard details. The strengthening scheme aimed to the increase of both strength and deformation capacity of the original R/C frame. The inelastic deformations are purposely concentrated to a short steel link element connecting the steel bracing to the R/C frame. The results show that the steel link element can increase considerably the strength and the energy dissipation capacity of the frame.

  • A magnetotelluric survey and geological survey have been performed to delineate deeply extended fracture systems at the geothermal field in Seokmo Island, Inchon, Korea. One borehole(BH-1) succeed to meet a large fracture system at the depth of 750 m where approximately $72^{\circ}C$ geothermal water is overflowing, while the other borehole(BH-2), which is about 200 m eastward from BH-1, failed to develop enough geothermal water even at the depth of 1,200m. Though there have been so many electric noise sources around the survey region, good quality of MT data above 1 Hz could be obtained with careful installation, remote reference processing. Inversion of MT data for two lines roughly perpendicular to the two major lineaments respectively show that the two lineaments are related to the fracture systems that are extended at least down to 1.5 km depth and inclined eastwards. From the interpretation, additional drilling for BH-2 is recommended and finally meet the fracture systems at the depth of 1,280 m and resulted in overflow of large amount of geothermal water of temperature $69.4^{\circ}C$ from BH-2.

  • This paper presents analysis of temperature and light intensity characteristics of PV modules with solar cell type. Taking the effect of sunlight irradiance on the cell temperature, the first experiment takes ambient temperature as reference input and uses the solar insolation as a unique varying parameter. Then taking the effect of the cell temperature on sunlight irradiance, the second experiment takes 1000W/$m^2$ as reference input and uses the cell temperature as a unique varying parameter. As a result, varying sunlight irradiance, the Cell-Type with the smallest change in output is HIT and the Cell-Type with the biggest change in output is a-Si. Varying the cell temperature, the Cell-Type with the smallest change in output is a-Si and the Cell-Type with the biggest change in output is Single-Si. And considering both temperature and light intensity characteristics, the Cell-Type with the smallest change in output is HIT.
