In this study, a Bi2Te3 thermoelectric generator (TEG) was fabricated to convert unused thermal energy into useful electrical energy. For the performance test, a dedicated experiment device consisting of a heating block operating with cartridge heaters and a cooling block through which a refrigerant flows was constructed. A 3×3 array of thermocouples was mounted on the heating block and the cooling block, respectively, to derive the temperature fields and heat transfer rate onto both sides of the TEG. Experiments were conducted for a total of 9 temperature differences, obtaining V-I and P-R curves. The results of 7 variables including Seebeck coefficients that have a major effect on performance were presented as a function of the temperature difference. The feasibility of the energy recovery performance of the developed TEG was verified from the maximum power output of 7.5W and conversion efficiency of 11.3%.
Background: Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss(ISSHL) has been generally defined as an abrupt loss of auditory acuity without precipitating factors. Since ISSHL was first described as a disease entity, numerous reports assessing a variety of treatment regimens have been published. But its etiology, pathogenesis, treatment, and prognosis are controversial at the present time. Stellate ganglion block(SGB) has been used for the treatment of ISSHL by vasodilatation and increased blood flow to the inner ear. Methods: We reviewed the records of 152 patients to investigate the efficacy of SGB for ISSHL. The control group was managed with medications such as hypaque, heparin, steroid, nicotinic acid, and vitamins. The SGB group was managed with SGB and the same medications. SGB was performed with 8 ml of 1.0% mepivacaine. The efficacy of treatment was evaluated by pure-tone average following therapy. The recovery of hearing was defined as Siegel's criteria I, II, or III. Results: The recovery rate of the SGB group was higher than that of the control group(61.5 vs. 42.9%, p<0.05). The recovery rate was higher in patients who were treated early, within 7 days from the onset of symptoms, especially in the SGB group(79.7%). And in the case that initial hearing loss was severe (>70dB), the SGB group had a higher recovery rate(64.2%) than the control group(42.5%). Conclusions: SGB is thought to be a useful therapy for ISSHL, especially in the patients who were treated soon after onset or whose initial hearing loss was severe.

For the improvement of coding efficiency, the H.264 standard uses new coding tools which are not used in previous coding standards. Among new coding tools, motion estimation using smaller block sizes leads to higher correlation between the motion vectors of neighboring blocks. This characteristic of H.264 is useful for the motion vector recovery. In this paper, we propose the motion vector recovery method based on optical flow. Since the proposed method estimates the optical flow velocity vector from more accurate initial value and optical flow region is limited to 16$\times$16 block size, we can alleviate the complexity of computation of optical flow velocity. Simulation results show that our proposed method gives higher objective and subjective video quality than previous methods.

We analyze the performance of MAC-layer Reed-Solomon error recovery in the cdma2000 1xEV-DO Broadcast and Multicast Services (BCMCSs) environment, with respect to the size of the ECB (Error Control Block) and the air-channel condition, and establish the relationship between ECB size, error recovery capacity and service latency. From this we propose an adaptive error recovery scheme which adjusts the size of the ECB to reflect the environment of the mobile nodes so as to meet the required service quality (target bit error-rate), while reducing the latency of real-time applications. Extensive simulation results show the effectiveness of our approach compared to the current static scheme. Proposed adaptive schemes achieves near optimal solution with respect to service latency while satisfying the required service quality.

Abstract Causal message logging has the advantages of optimistic message logging during failure-free execution and pessimistic message logging during recovery. In this paper, we present a new recovery algorithm based on causal message logging for improving asynchrony among recovering processes. Existing recovery algorithms based on causal message logging block the execution of live processes or require high synchronization among recovering processes. As each recovering process is responsible for only its recovery in our algorithm, the algorithm avoids blocking the execution of live processes during recovery even in concurrently multiple failures and overloading only one among recovering processes. Moreover, it allows the recovery of each recovering process not to be delayed by the continuous failures of other recovering processes. We prove the correctness of our recovery algorithm, and our simulation results show that our algorithm reduces the average recovery time of a failed process compared with the existing recovery algorithms.

The occurrence of brain stem stroke after lumbar selective nerve root block seem to be an uncommon event comparing it to after cervical selective nerve root block. We recently experienced a 60-year-old man who were diagnosed as left lateral medullary infarction (Wallenberg's syndrome) after lumbar selective nerve root block. He was treated by traditional Korean medicine with acupunture, Pulsed electromagetic therapy (PEMT), herb medicine. The range of motion of upper and lower extremity, manual muscle test, Korean version of Berg balance scale (K-BBS) and Korean version of Barthel index (K-MBI) were adopted to measure the resulting recovery after 4 weeks treatment. Traditional Korean medicine was effective for rehabilitation of patient. Further studies are needed to set up and Korean medical protocol for Wallenberg's syndrome.
Accidental high epidural block is a rare but serious complication. It can result from many factors, which include the volume and concentration of drug, posture, puncture site, age, pregnancy or intra-abdominal mass, and patients' height and weight. We had a case of accidental high epidural block recently. This is a case report which was confirmed by an epiduragram. A healthy 50-year-old woman with a huge uterine myoma was scheduled for a total abdominal hysterectomy under continous epidural analgesia. Epidural catheterization was carried out smoothly. However, an unexpected hypotension was noticed after an epidural injection of 2% lidocaine 25 ml. Thereafter, the patient was intubated and her respiration was controlled during the operation. Using the 5mg of ephedrine, her blood pressure and pulse were well maintained. The scheduled operation was carried out for one hour uneventfully, but after the operation, she felt paresthesia on her hands in the recovery room. To differentiate between the high epidural and the subdural blocks. We injected 5 ml of a water soluble Niopam 300 through the catheter postoperatively. It was observed on the epiduragram that the catheter was placed in the epidural space. It was suggested that the high epidural block was induced from the widespread diffusion through the narrowed epidural space due to the engorgement of the epidural venous plexus by the patient's huge uterine myoma.
Alkali-surfactant polymer flooding has become an important technique to improve oil recovery following the development of oil fields while the function of emulsification in enhanced oil recovery is rarely considered in the existing mathematical model for numerical simulation. In this paper, the mechanism of improving the recovery of the emulsification was analyzed in ASP flooding, and a relatively perfect mathematical model with deep filtration-theory was established, in which oil-water volume equation, saturation equation, viscosity equation, and permeability reduction equation are included. The new model is used to simulate the actual block of an oil field; the simulated results of the new model and an old model without considering the emulsification are compared with the actual well history. It is found that new model which is easy to be realized in numerical simulation has a high precision fitting, and the effect of adding oil and decreasing water is obvious. The sensitivity of emulsification was analyzed, and the results show that the water reducing funnel becomes wider and the rate of water cut decreases rapidly with the increase of emulsifying capacity, and then the rate of recovery slows down. The effect of increasing oil and decreasing water is better, and the degree of recovery increases. The emulsification of the ASP flooding is maintained at a moderate level, which corresponds to ${\Phi}=0.2$ in the new model, and the emulsification is applied to realize the general mathematical quantitative description, so as to better guide the oilfield development.

A 2-frame PTV (particle tracking velocimetry) system using the concept of match probability between two consequent image frames has been developed to obtain instantaneous velocity fields. The overall 2-frame PTV system including image pre-processing, tracking algorithm and post-processing routine was implemented to apply to real flows. The developed 2-frame PTV system has several advantages such as high recovery ratio of velocity vectors, low error ratio and small computational time compared with the conventional 4-frame PTV and the FFT-based cross-correlation PIV technique. The 2-frame PTV system was applied to a turbulent channel flow over a rectangular block to check its reliability and usefulness. Total 96 sequential image frames have been captured and processed to get both mean and fluctuating velocity vector fields over the recirculating region. The mean velocity and turbulent intensity profiles were well agreed with hte LDV measurements in the separated region behind the block. Time-averaged reattachment length is about 6.3 times of the block height.

A compressed video stream is very sensitive to transmission errors that may severely degrade the reconstructed image. Therefore, error resilience is an essential problem in video communications. In this paper, we propose novel temporal error concealment techniques for recovering lost or erroneously received macroblock (MB). To reduce the computational complexity, the proposed method adaptively determines the search range for each lost MB to find best matched block in the previous frame. And the original corrupted MB split into for $8{\times}8$ sub-MBs, and estimates motion vector (MV) of each sub-MB using its boundary information. Then the estimated MVs are utilized to reconstruct the damaged MB. In simulation results, the proposed method shows better performance than conventional methods in both aspects of PSNR.
