  • A fighter performing a reconnaissance mission is equipped with a pod that drives optical/infrared sensors for acquiring and identifying target information on the lower part of the fuselage. Due to the nature of the reconnaissance mission, the fighter performs high speed evasive maneuvers, and the resulting load should be considered importantly for the development of the pod. This paper concerns a numerical investigation into the inertial and aerodynamic loads of the airborne pod of high performance aircrafts. For the aerodynamic load analysis, the pylon and pod shapes are added to the fighter 3D model, and the commercial software was used for static and dynamic analysis. Considering the practical mission conditions, the common/extreme conditions were established respectively in the static and dynamic situations of pods and the driving torque could be tripled under dynamic conditions. In the analysis of inertia load, a 3-DOF model considering roll and turning maneuvers was derived by the Lagrangian method, and then the numerical integration method was applied to the analysis. As a results, it was conformed that the inertia load was generally induced at a low level compared to the aerodynamic load, but depending on the unbalance mass condition of the pod, the inertia load cannot be negligible.

  • The existing vision-based techniques for inspection and condition assessment of civil infrastructure are mostly manual and consequently time-consuming, expensive, subjective, and risky. As a viable alternative, researchers in the past resorted to deep learning-based autonomous damage detection algorithms for expedited post-disaster reconnaissance of structures. Although a number of automatic damage detection algorithms have been proposed, the scarcity of labeled training data remains a major concern. To address this issue, this study proposed a semi-supervised learning (SSL) framework based on consistency regularization and cross-supervision. Image data from post-earthquake reconnaissance, that contains cracks, spalling, and exposed rebars are used to evaluate the proposed solution. Experiments are carried out under different data partition protocols, and it is shown that the proposed SSL method can make use of unlabeled images to enhance the segmentation performance when limited amount of ground truth labels are provided. This study also proposes DeepLab-AASPP and modified versions of U-Net++ based on channel-wise attention mechanism to better segment the components and damage areas from images of reinforced concrete buildings. The channel-wise attention mechanism can effectively improve the performance of the network by dynamically scaling the feature maps so that the networks can focus on more informative feature maps in the concatenation layer. The proposed DeepLab-AASPP achieves the best performance on component segmentation and damage state segmentation tasks with mIoU scores of 0.9850 and 0.7032, respectively. For crack, spalling, and rebar segmentation tasks, modified U-Net++ obtains the best performance with Igou scores (excluding the background pixels) of 0.5449, 0.9375, and 0.5018, respectively. The proposed architectures win the second place in IC-SHM2021 competition in all five tasks of Project 2.

  • Urban deep excavation will affect greatly on the deformation of adjacent existing buildings, especially those with shallow foundations. Isolation piles has been widely used in engineering to control the deformation of buildings adjacent to the excavation, but its applicability is still controversial. Based on a typical engineering, numerical calculation models were established and verified through monitoring data to study the influence characteristics of isolation piles on the deformation of existing shallow foundation buildings. Results reveal that adjacent buildings will increase building settlement δv and the deformation of diaphragm walls δh, while the isolation piles can effectively decrease these. The surface settlement curve is changed from "groove" type to "double groove" type. Sufficiently long isolation pile can effectively decrease δv, while short isolation piles will lead to a negative effect. When the building is within the range of the maximum settlement location P, maximum building rotation θm will increase with the pile length L and the relative position between isolation pile and building d/D increase (d is the distance between piles and diaphragm walls, D is the distance between buildings and diaphragm walls), instead, θm will decrease for buildings outside the location P, and the optimum was obtained when d/D=0.7.

  • The aim of this study is to evaluate the possibility of damage to cultural assets resulting from vibrations generated by construction vehicle traffic. The cultural heritage's natural vibration frequency was determined to be 150Hz by measurement. The damping ratios were calculated as 4.7% using the logarithmic decrement approach and 4.3% using the half-power method. The vibration measurements obtained during vehicle operation indicated that, despite an increase in vehicle velocity of up to 15 km/h, the vibrations remained below the detectable level of 0.13 mm/sec. When the road is curved and the terrain is sloped, a suitable speed for vehicle operation was found to be around 17 km/h, at which point vibrations were seen. The highest recorded vibration amplitude at this velocity was 0.217 mm/sec, which remains below the stringent regulation limit of 2 mm/sec. Thus, it can be concluded that there is no actual harm caused by vibrations.

  • In the 21st century, the roles of UGV in the ground battle draw its attention and many research about how to use it is going on globally, but not many study is doing about how to measure its combat effectiveness in the battle. Basically, the effectiveness of UGV is different from its mission profile. Hence, we proposed Measures Of Effectiveness which can measure the UGV effectiveness based on five different missions such as mine detection, nbc detection, reconnaissance, rescue, and fire mission. We expect that these Measures Of Effectiveness proposed are able to contribute to increase the credibility of the study results for UGV effectiveness. We also hope that this paper can stimulate to expand the research scope and related field about UGV effectiveness in the future.

  • Recently, the applications of unmanned system are steadily increasing. Unmanned automatic system is suitable for routine mission such as reconnaissance, environment monitoring, resource conservation and investigation. Especially, for the ocean environment monitoring mission, many ocean engineers had scoped with the routine and even risky works. The automatic system can replace the periodic and routine missions: water sampling, temperature and salinity measuring, etc. In this paper, an unmanned surface vessel was designed for routine and periodic ocean environmental missions. An autonomous control system was designed and tested for the unmanned vessel. A GPS and gyro compass was used for navigation. A linear autopilot model for course control can be derived from the maneuvering model. Nomoto's 2nd-order response equation was derived. The design methodologies and performance of the surface vessel were illustrated and verified with this linearized equation of motion. A linear controller was designed and automatic route tracking performance was verified for yaw subsystem.

  • We deal with the target selection in seeker-detection image through network, using the detection information from aerial vehicle and the target information from surveillance and reconnaissance system. Especially, we constrain the sea battle environment, where it is difficult to perform scene-matching rather than land. In this paper, we suggest the target selection algorithm based on the confidence estimation with respect to distance and size. In detail, we propose the generation method of reference point for distance evaluation, and we investigate the effect of pixel margin and target course for size evaluation. Finally, the proposed algorithm is simulated and analyzed through several scenarios.

  • Terrestrial Laser Scanning(TLS) was developed at the mid-to-late 1990s. This technique enables to perform reconnaissance surveying of regions or structures hard to access. Besides, TLS has been extended its application gradually such as preservation of historical remains, underground surveys, slopes, glaciers monitoring and so on. However, though the technique has a lot of advantages, an application for structural health and safety monitoring is a beginning stage and it need much research. Therefore in this study, as a groundwork, the estimation model on stress of structures using TLS and Finite Element Method(FEM) applied by the Digital Elevation Model(DEM) technique of geoinformatics is proposed. For the verification of this model, experiments were performed with a continuous steel beam subjected to point loads and outputs were compared with those of electrical strain sensors.
