This study aims to suggest adequate soil management through the analysis of physicochemical properties of soil in the planting grounds of Incheon International Airport, which was constructed on a massive land reclamation site. Study areas were 5 sites at the international business complex, the passenger terminal, the airport support complex, the free trade zone, and the access road. Soil profile analysis showed that 9 plots out of the 27 plots were hardpan and heterospere within 80cm from the soil surface. The earth laid on the ground was categorized as gravel based soil(4 plots), dredged soil from the sea bottom and mixed reclamation materials(2 plots), clay with poor permeability(3 plots) and waste construction material(1 plot). Average soil hardness was $11.5kg/cm^2$ and soil textures were sandy soil, sandy loam and loamy sand. Average soil pH was 6.7 and average organic matter content was 0.7%. Electrical conductivity was 0.0dS/m and exchangeable cation concentrations were $Ca^{2+}$ 3.4cmol/kg, $Mg^{2+}$ 1.5cmol/kg, $K^+$ 0.3cmol/kg and $Na^+$ 1.0cmol/kg. Average cation exchange capacity was 11.0cmol/kg. Although average figures in Solum mostly meet the landscape design criteria, properties of each soil layer showed various values sometimes over the limit. Base saturations were $Ca^{2+}$ 29.9%, $Mg^{2+}$ 13.3% and $K^+$ 3.7% for lower soil, $Ca^{2+}$ 33.3%, $Mg^{2+}$ 17.0% and $K^+$ 2.7% for mid-soil and $Ca^{2+}$ 32.6%, $Mg^{2+}$ 12.2% and $K^+$ 1.9% for upper soil. Exchangeable sodium percentages were 16.4% for lower soil, 7.5% for mid-soil and 4.7% upper soil. Sodium adsorption rates were 0.8 for lower soil, 0.3 for mid-soil and 0.2 for upper soil. Factors affecting to the vegetation growth were heterogeneity and poorness of solum, disturbance of dredged soils, high soil hardness including hardpan in the subsurface soil layer and shallow effective soil depth, high soil acidity, imbalance of base contents, low organic matter content and low available phosphate levels in the soil.
Poplars and willow were planted to identify suitable species and varieties for landfill reclamation at the Sudokwon Landfill Site in 1997. Survival rate, growth performance, vitality, visible foliar injury by pollutants, fungi, and leaf insects, and stem borer damage have been investigated for 10 clones of 4 poplar species and 2 clones of one willow species from 1997 to 2005. The average survival rates of poplar and willow clones were drastically decreased from 90% in 1997 to 53% in 2005. Among poplar species, Populus alba ${\times}$ P. glandulosa showed the highest mean survival rate of 66%, while Populus koreana ${\times}$ P. nigra var. italica and Populus euramericana were the lowest of 41%, respectively in 2005. Clivus, which is one of the clones from Populus alba ${\times}$ P. glandulosa, showed the highest survival rate of 73%. For mean height, Ec028 clone(P. euramericana) showed the highest of $11.2m{\pm}2.1m$ and followed by Clivus of $11.0m{\pm}2.0m$. Clone 131-27(Salix alba) was the lowest of $7.8m{\pm}1.6m$. Vitality, defoliation, visible foliar damage, and stem borer damage were significantly different among clones. Most of Populus alba ${\times}$ P. glandulosa and Salix alba clones seemed to have strong vitality and to be tolerant to various stresses at the site. However, Populus nigra ${\times}$ P. maximowiczii was sensitive to the stress. We have selected 5 clones in total: Clivus as the best clone for waste landfill reclamation, and additionally two Salix clones 131-25, 131-27 and two clones of Populus alba ${\times}$ P. glandulosa (72-9, 72-16) have been selected. These five clones could be supplied for planting at sites having an environment similar to the Sudokwon Landfill Site.

Among the byproducts from thermal power plant using coal combustion, fly ash as mineral admixture is widely utilized in concrete manufacturing for its engineering merits. However residuals including bottom ash are usually reclaimed. This study presents an evaluation of engineering properties in cement mortar with pond ash (PA). For this work, two types of pond ash (anthracite and bituminous coal) are selected from two reclamation sites. Cement mortar specimens considering two w/c (0.385 and 0.485) ratios and three replacement ratio of sand (0%, 30%, and 60%) are prepared and their workability, mechanical, and durability performance are evaluated. Anthracite pond ash has high absorption and smooth surface so that it shows reasonable workability, strength development, and durability performance since it has dense pore structure due to smooth surface and sufficient mixing water inside. Reuse of PA is expected to be feasible since PA cement mortar has reasonable engineering performance compared with normal cement mortar.
The purpose of this study was to prevent spreading of contaminants from movement of underground water by creating a barrier using artificial freezing method on a soil contaminated by oils and various NAPLs. Specimens with 80% and 90% degrees of saturation were prepared to form freezing barrier using artificial freezing method. With increasing freezing time of freezing barrier, barrier was formed faster in the specimen with 90% degree of saturation by about an hour compared to the specimen with 80% degree of saturation. In addition, thinnest thickness of frozen barrier in both specimens was 50mm after 12 hours of freezing time, showing expansion of freezing area with time. The results of this study can be applied to barrier in waste reclamation sites and contaminated regions or to flow control of contaminants.
The objective of this study is to review of environmental assessment of heavy metals derived from various metalliferous mines in Korea. As a results of national wide research for heavy metal contaminations in the vicinity of metalleferous mines, the main contaminants are mine waste materials including tailings. From the materials, toxic elements including As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn can be dispersed into downstream through wind and water. Thus, soils around the mines contain elevated levels of those elements, which are over the guide values for environmental regulation of soils in Korea. Arsenic is one of the most important elements contaminated by mining activities, to a less extent, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn. In spite of remediation works for some metal mines by the government, there are still lots of abandoned mines which are necessary for reclamation of mining sites. This study also includes that metal concentrations in soils and tailings can be varied upon various decomposition methods including 0.1N HC1 and aqua regia and sequential extraction scheme, with differences in each element, too. This may be due to geochemical characteristics of the elements, such as solubility, mobility and chemical forms in the geochemical environment. Finally, it is suggested that a certain organization should be runned by Korean government for management of abandoned mines.
An increased population and rapidly expanding industrial development have led to enormous amounts of various domestic and industrial wastes. The proper disposal of ever-increasing wastes is a growing global problem. Land treatment is one of the rational approaches that are environmentally safe and economically practical. It has long been practised in many sites. Recycling of industrial wastes on agricultural land can provide better possible means for maintaining environmental quality and utilizing waste-resources. Even though industrial wastes are beneficial as soil amendment and fertilizer, they have some limitation on land application because of wide variability as well as physicochemical problem in their composition. A direct application of solid and liquid wastes on land is being practised in Korea and some experimental results are presented. The direct application of fermentation waste on rice resulted in a 6 percent yield increase. Another organic residue from glutamic acid fermentation is widely used not only as a direct application as a liquid fertilizer but also for a raw material of organic compound fertilizer. These wastes are much promising as sources of plant nutrients, since they have large amounts of nutrients, especially nitrogen with few toxic metals. On the other hand, fertilizers developed from inorganic industrial wastes include calcium silicate, calcium sulfate and ammonium sulfate. The calcium silicate fertilizer simply produced from slag, by-product of iron and steel manufacturing plant is one of the most successful example of the conversion of wastes to fertilizer and slag production capacity totals to over three million MT/year. About 200,000 MT of calcium silicate fertilizer is currently applied in the paddy rice every year. Calcium sulfate, a waste from the wet phosphoric acid process is to some extent used as a filler of compound fertilizers but quite large quantites are directly applied for the reclamation of tidal flat.

Mine wastes such as acid mine drainage (AMD) can cause the detrimental effects on surrounding environment, thereby eventually threatening human health. Main objective of this study was to evaluate the neutralizing effect of fly ash (FA) as a stabilizing material AMD. Field plot was constructed in a coal waste depot which has caused aluminium-whitening adjacent to the stream. Different mixing ratios of FA were applied on a top of the soil, and then the physicochemical properties of runoff and soil were monitored. Constructed plots were as following: control (mine waste only (W)), mine waste + 20% ($w\;w^{-1}$)of FA (WC20M), mine waste + 40% ($w\;w^{-1}$)of FA (WC40M), and WC40M dressed with a fresh soil at the top (WC40MD). Result showed that initial pH of runoff in control was 5.09 while that in WC40M (7.81) was significantly increased. For a plot treated with WC40M, the concentration of Al in runoff was decreased to $0.22mg\;L^{-1}$ compared to the W as the control ($4.85mg\;L^{-1}$). Moreover, the concentration of Fe was also decreased to less than half at the WC40M compared to the control. Application of FA can be useful for neutralizing AMD and possibly minimizing adverse effect of AMD in mining area.
It has been known that shallow-water regions, such as tidal flats, sea grass and sea weed beds have water purification capability, and they also serve as nursery grounds for many fishes. On the other hand, tidal flat areas are economically attractive sites for reclamation, to be used for developing industries. When developing shallow-water areas, we have to propose a plan to mitigate the environmental impact associated with such a development plan. However, it is difficult to estimate the affects on the ecosystem and water purification, and the literature related to this matter is insufficient. In order to evaluate the ability of coastal tidal flat and to predict the future changes, it is necessary to develop a reliable prediction technique and construction of data by using a field investigation. In this study, we carried out a numerical model test for the tidal flat ecosystem, using the pelagic system and the benthic system, simultaneously, in order to show a change in the tidal flat ecosystem. The flow of nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon has been identified as a primary consideration of marine ecosystem components, and the capability of water purification and the change of the tidal flat were predicted using this flow. In order to make a more reliable prediction, a field investigation to determine tide, current and creatures of the object coastal area has been done. The purification capability of this shallow-water region is estimated from the model results. According to the results of experiments, the tidal flat has a capability of water purification (Sink) of 11mgN/m2/day, but the other area has a load (Source) of 20mgN/m2/day. As a result, we could confirm that the tidal flat of an object coastal area plays an important role in water purification.

The Saemangeum project is one of the biggest reclamation efforts in Korea and may cause coastal ecosystem change due to altered environments and habitat loss. Since February 2002, benthic environment and community structure in the Saemangeum studied area were studied to assess the influence of the project on macrofaunal community. The result of seasonal study from February, 2002 to August 2005 is reported here. Overall, changes of species numbers and dominant species of benthic animals in the periods before (1988) and after $(2002{\sim}2005)$ the Saemangeum dike construction were not evident both inside and outside the dike. However, local environmental and community change were noted The partial completion of Saemangeum dike $(4^{th}\;dike)$ in June 2003 altered water circulation and sediment deposition patterns both inside and outside the dike. Fine sediment was accumulated inside and outside the $4^{th}$ dike while coarse sediment dominated near the main channel (Sinsi gate). Benthic community resl)ended to the altered sediment type in these areas. Species number and diversity in both site was low compared to other sites. The dominant species in these areas were composed of the benthos that had not commonly occurred in the Saemangeum subtidal area.

Seagrass bed is an important component in coastal and estuarine ecosystems, providing food and shelter to a wide variety of fauna. Recently, seagrass coverage has declined significantly due to anthropogenic influences such as reclamation, dredging, and eutrophication and consequently, necessity of seagrass habitat restoration is rising. Transplantation experiments with Zostera marina using TERFS, staple method, and shell method have been conducted at Dadae Bay, Kosung Bay and Jindong Bay on the south coast of Korea to select an optimal transplanting method for restoration of Z. marina habitat. Three experimental sites located at the vicinity of natural Z. marina beds with an average water depth of about 4m. Z. marina plants, which were collected from donor bed in Koje Bay were also transplanted at 7 different time from October 2003 to July 2004 to find appropriate transplanting time. Density of Z. marina was monitored monthly at both transplanted areas and natural beds. Transplantation using the staple method showed the highest survival rate of transplant. Shell method was also an effective transplanting method at muddy areas in Kosung Bay and Jindong Bay, but not suitable at sandy areas in Dadae Bay. These results suggest that sediment composition of transplanting areas should be considered for the selection of the optimal transplanting method. Z. marina transplanted during fall usually showed the highest survival rate, while most Z. marina plants transplanted in summer died due to high lethal temperature during this period.
