As a large construction such as highway, dam, reclaimed land etc. increase in number more and more, large amount of fill materials are required. However, it's difficult to obtain it because of environmental problems and economical efficiency. A alternative plan is to utilize a gypsum which is a by-product yielded from chemical plants and verify suitability to use gypsum as fill materials. Therefore, a characteristic of compaction for gypsum is analyzed and construction methods are given regard to this characteristic from construction of dike using gypsum. Based on the results obtained, it is found that moisture of gypsum in compaction should to be more dry side of O.M.C(optimal moisture content) because of sponge phenomenon. When gypsum is used to fill materials, standards of compaction should be decided from laboratory test.

The purpose of this study is to present the conditions and methods for keeping the sustainability of the landscape resources of the East Coast of Gangwon province, the republic of Korea by investigating the landscape resources management in the area and pointing out its problems. The problems of the landscape resources management are: 1) the disturbance of the persistence of life by reclamation, the population reduction in the ecosystem due to the overload in environmental capacity, and the severance of space between land and water. 2) the reduction of the benefits from indirect experience by interfering with the conservation of fluxes -- the manipulation of horizontal arrangement of the landscape resource, the visual disturbance by the construction of high-storied buildings, and the disharmony between the color/image and the environment. The means for keeping sustainability of the landscape resources include the regulations of development and use, the change in the recognition of the value of landscape resources and the moral system, and the improvement of resource management skills.
In nature, the overall effect of heavy metals on the biota can be influenced by a number of environmental factors like soil characteristics and air pollution by elevated $CO_2$. Pillbugs (Isopoda, Armadillium vulgare) take up heavy metals with their food and store them mainly in the vesicles of hepatopancreas. They accumulate certain metals, occur in relatively large numbers, are easily collected and identified, and provide sufficient material for analysis. The species are decomposing litter well and soil impurities into N and P. Therefore, it has been suggested that total body concentration of metals in pillbugs could be positively correlated to the levels of environmental exposure and that pillbugs could be used as biological indicators of metal pollution and global change by $CO_2$. The aim of the study is to determine effects of heavy metal concentrations in soil and elevated $CO_2$ on pillbugs' body accumulation of heavy metal and growth rate. In this study, the concentrations of six metals (Fe, Mg Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd) have been determined. Pillbugs (N=287) were collected at five sites during Jul-Aug, 2006. Cu and Zn concentrations in the body were much higher than in the soils(1.39-41.70 times). This indicated that bioaccumulation of some of the heavy metals were increasing in the food-chain. The high bioconcentration of lead in Sangam may be partly associated with reclaimed land uses.

In order to expand agricultural lands in the western and southern coasts of Korean Peninsula, coarse soils excavated from hillsides have been used as fill materials for reclamation. In order to tackle with the problems and to confirm availability, research on soil improvement involve mixing cement to the fine wet soils. Required undrained shear strength$(C_u)$ for fill material was analysed to be 0.34~1.2 $kgf/cm^2$. It has been known that when cement is added to high water content marine clay its unconfined compression strength increased to 2 $kgf/cm^2$. Consolidation results show that pre-consolidation pressure increased to 1.8 $kgf/cm^2$and 3.4 $kgf/cm^2$ with the addition of 3% and 5% of cement respectively. This result shows that low-height embankments could be constructed without significant compression. Since the effectiveness of improvement may be different site by site, the mix design for each site is necessary in order to optimize it. The process is first to determine aimed shear strength and then optimum mix ratio of cement after carrying out a series of tests.
In order to utilize mass of oyster shells for a partial substitute material for reclamation, the shear characteristics of two-phase mixture soil with oyster shells were investigated with $\overline{CU}$ test. From various experiments, it was found that the increase of mixed ratio of oyster shells causes the shear strength of mixed soil. And this phenomenon not only depends on friction due to confining pressure such as pure clay but also is influenced by shaping skeleton of oyster shells. Also, it was discovered that there were many influences by clay-oyster shell mixture from the study of the secant modulus and dilatancy characteristics of mixed soil. In addition, variation of oyster shell skeleton during shearing stage is examined applying modifying coefficient concept.
Constructed wetlands are established efficient technologies and provide sustainable solution for wastewater treatment. Similarly, biochar, which is an organic material, produced by means of pyrolysis, offers simple and low cost techniques to treat water and reduce carbon footprint. Combining both of these technologies can greatly augment the efficiency of the system. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of constructed wetlands by using biochar as media. Horizontal wetland beds with dimension ($1m{\times}0.33m{\times}0.3m$) were prepared using gravels and biochar, and cultivated with the Canna species. Synthetic wastewater was passed through these beds with average flow rate of $1.2{\times}10^{-7}m^3/sec$ achieving a retention time of three days. Pollutant removal performance was compared between the controlled and experimental wetland beds. This study reveals that the wetland with biochar were more efficient as compared to the wetland with gravels alone with average removal rate of 91.3% COD, 58.3% TN, 58.3% $NH_3$, 92% $NO_3-N$, 79.5% TP, and 67.7% $PO_4$.

The compact structure and high-quality effluent of membrane bioreactors make them well-suited for decentralized greywater reclamation. However, the occurrence of membrane fouling continues to limit their effectiveness. To address this concern, a unique membrane module configuration was developed for use in a decentralized greywater treatment system. The module featured local aeration directly below a series of inclined membrane bundles, giving the overall module a twisted appearance compared to a module with vertically orientated fibres. The intent of this design was to increase the frequency and intensity of collisions between rising air bubbles and the membrane surface. Material related to the construction of custom-fit modules is rarely communicated. Therefore, detailed design and assembly procedures were provided in this paper. The twisted module was compared to two commercially available modules with diverse specifications in order to assess the relative performance and marketability of the twisted module with respect to existing products. Contaminant removal efficiencies were determined in terms of biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, ammonia, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and turbidity for each module. Membrane fouling was monitored in terms of permeate flux, transmembrane pressure, and membrane resistance. Following 168 h of operation, the twisted module configuration demonstrated competitive performance, indicating good potential for further development and commercialization.
Until now, disposal of casting foundry fly ash generally depends on reclamation. This is the great loss from a point of view saving of resources and utilizing industrial wastes. Therefore, a study on the use of fly ash as a substitute material for construction is necessary in order to utilize industrial wastes, to reduce cost of production, to improve quality in producing concrete products, and to protect environment from pollution. In this study, concrete products(hollow concrete block and concrete brick) using casting foundry fly ash as a substitute materials for cement, are produced. And experiments are conducted based on Korean Industrial Standards. Finally, the used methods of casting foundry fly ash as a substitute materials in industry are presented.
Geotechnical evaluation on the reactive drain pile which can achieve simultaneously both the soft ground improvement and the remediation of contaminated pore water in reclamation site was performed. Applicability of steel-making slag used as a inside reactive material was confirmed. To investigate the consolidation characteristics of the soft ground improved by reactive drain pile, testing devices to form and install the reactive drain pile were developed and laboratory tests were performed according to the existence of outside sand drain and the length of impermeable barrier. Test results showed that the consolidation time was decreased as the shortening of impermeable barrier. However, the effect of outside sand drain on consolidation time was dominant compared with the length of impermeable barrier.
In Incheon area, 1960s of economic development planning and heavy industry center of efforts industrial park and port facilities, It is industrial land reclamation by coastal landfill, these industrial park has the characteristics of Low permeability lipid is embedded in the silty sand that was dredged. In this study, To evaluate the heavy metal adsorption ability to filter of drains that have been developed as environmentally friendly materials by applying the effective zeolite to heavy metal adsorption for soil pollution purification suitable for geological characteristics of Incheon. soil pollution Survey data and Literature search, which is the current through the industry, the most problematic was set to Cadmium (Cd) and Copper(Cu), Lead (Pb). and Using the Numerical Analysis using the Visual Modflow, was presented the most efficient drains set interval and format.
