  • Recent advances in perinatal care have resulted in improved survival of extremely low birth weight infants (ELBWI). However, bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) remains one of the major complications in ELBWI. BPD was originally described over 40 years ago; the clinical characteristics, epidemiology, and pathogenesis of BPD have changed markedly through this period. In this article, I have reviewed recent progress in research concerning the clinical presentation and characteristics, epidemiology, and pathogenesis of BPD.

  • We report the recent progress and future prospects of flexible, large-area sensors and actuator using organic thin-film transistors (TFTs). In particular, we describe printing technologies to manufacture electronic artificial skins (e-skins) for robots, sheet image scanners suitable for mobile applications, and Braille sheet display with plastic actuator arrays. We also present recent progress of reliability and stability issues.

  • The WV film successfully enlarged the field of view of the TN mode and made TN popular for larger size applications such as PC monitors. The hybrid alignment of the PDM (polymerized discotic material) layer is also suited for the OCB mode, which is promising as a nextgeneration LCD-TV because of fast panel response and a wide viewing angle. This paper describes recent technological progress in WV films, especially for OCB.

  • Electrochemical energy-storage devices such as batteries and supercapacitors are important components in emerging portable electronic device, electric vehicle, and clean energy storage and supply technologies. This review describes recent progress in the development of nanostructured electrodes, the main component of the electrochemical energy-storage device, prepared by layer-by-layer (LbL) electrostatic assembly. Major advantages associated with, and challenges to, the fabrication of LbL electrodes, as well as the future outlook for expanding the application of LbL techniques, are discussed.

  • Optical scanning holography (OSH) is a distinct digital holographic technique in that real-time holographic recording a three-dimensional (3-D) object can be acquired by using two-dimensional active optical heterodyne scanning. Applications of the technique so far have included optical scanning cryptography, optical scanning microscopy, 3-D pattern recognition, 3-D holographic TV, and 3-D optical remote sensing. This paper reviews some of the recent progress in OSH. Some possible further works are also discussed.

  • The super multi-view (SMV) display and the high-density directional (HDD) display were proposed as a natural 3D display that is free from the visual fatigue caused by the accommodation-vergence conflict and provides smooth motion parallax. The multi-projection system, the flat-panel system, and the time-multiplexing system are used to construct the HDD displays. The recent progress of the HDD 3D display is reviewed.

  • Background: Atopic dermatitis starts as an early childhood type I hypersensitivity to environmental allergens and is often the first step in the atopic march to develop into asthma and allergic rhinitis. Despite progress that has been achieved in management, this health problem remains poorly controlled and cause great pain and suffering for many children and their parents To introduce nurses to recent progress in pathophysiology, management and preventive measure of atopic disease. Search method: Systemic search was done using the PubMed and CINAHL from 1980 to 2005. In addition, historical references were taken from standard medical textbook. Results: In total, 30 relevant publications were located including primary research and review articles that cover the pathophysiology, management, and preventive measure of atopy. The evidence emerging from literature indicate that non-medical approaches such as breastfeeding and probiotics would improve management outcomes. Conclusion: The review suggests that breastfeeding and probiotic approaches would be the most effective preventive measures for children with atopic diseases.
