This study was carried out to determine the optimal number of ARGO floats in the East Sea in order to maximize their applications. The dominant spatio-temporal scale, size of the domain, and the typical float lifetimes in the East Sea were taken into consideration. The mean spatial de-correlation scale of temperature on isobaric surfaces reaches about 60 km. The minimum necessary number of floats is about 82 on average in order to secure independent ARGO profiles with the de-correlation scale. Considering the float lifetimes, about 27 floats per year should be deployed to maintain the 82 ARGO float array every year. To obtain spatially uniform distribution of ARGO float data, mean residence time and dispersion rate (basin area/residence time) of ARGO floats were evaluated in each basin of the East Sea. A faster (slower) dispersion rate requires more (less) ARGO floats to maintain the spatially uniform number of floats. According to the analysis, it is likely that the optimal ratio of the number of floats for each basin is 1:2:4 corresponding to Ulleung Basin:Yamato Basin:Japan Basin. In order to maintain relatively uniform ARGO observing networks, it is necessary to establish a long-term plan for deployment strategy based on float pathways and the dispersion rate parameters estimated by using currently active ARGO float trajectory data as well as reanalysis data.
The sea level of the Java Sea is reproduced using HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) setting up in the horizontal grid from $100^{\circ}E$ to $125^{\circ}E$ and from $10^{\circ}S$ to $8^{\circ}N$. The model is initialized by ocean temperature and salinity profiles from Levitus 1998 and forced by the atmospheric field derived from NCEP reanalysis. In this research HYCOM is applied to explain the El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ Southern Oscillation (ENSO) impacts on the sea level of the Java Sea. The monthly tide gauge sea level data are produced based on hourly sea level data from 1993 to 1997. Altimeter sea level data are based on weekly merged products between TOPEX/Poseidon and ERS absolute dynamic topography (ADT). The simulated sea level both HYCOM and ADT agree well with the tide gauge sea level. The sea level of the Java Sea is high during the La $Ni{\tilde{n}}a$ period and low during the El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ period.
Using gridded wind-stress products constructed by satellite scatterometers (ERS-1, 2 and QSCAT) data and those by numerical weather prediction(NWP) model(NCEP-reanalysis), we estimate wind-driven transports of the North Pacific subtropical gyre, and compare them in the central portion of the gyre (around 300 N) with geostrophic transports calculated from historical hydrographic data (World Ocean Database 2005). Even if there are some discrepancies between the wind-driven transports by the QSCAT and NCEP products, they are both in good agreement with the geostrophic transports within reasonable errors, except for the regional difference in the eastern part of the zone. The difference in the eastern part is characterized by an anticyclonic deviation of the geostrophic transport resulting from an anti-cyclonic anomalous flow in the surface layer, suggesting that it is related to the Eastern Gyral produced by the thermohaline process associated with the formation of the Eastern Subtropical Mode Water. We also examine the consistency of the Sverdrup transports estimated from these products by comparing them with the transports of the western boundary current, namely the Kuroshio regions, in previous studies. The net southward transport, based on the sum of the Sverdrup transports by QSCAT and NCEP products and the thermohaline transport, agrees well with the net northward transport of the western boundary current, namely the Kuroshio transport. From these results, it is concluded that the Sverdrup balance can hold in the North Pacific subtropical gyre.
The synoptic structural characteristics associated with heavy snowfall (Bukgangneung: 31.3 cm) that occurred in the Yeongdong area on 20 January 2017 was investigated using surface and upper-level weather charts, European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) reanalysis data, radiosonde data, and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) cloud product. The cold dome and warm trough of approximately 500 hPa appeared with tropopause folding. As a result, cold and dry air penetrated into the middle and upper levels. At this time, the enhanced cyclonic potential vorticity caused strong baroclinicity, resulting in the sudden development of low pressure at the surface. Under the synoptic structure, localized heavy snowfall occurred in the Yeongdong area within a short time. These results can be confirmed from the vertical analysis of radiosonde data and the characteristics of the MODIS cloud product.
In this study, using 16 ORA-IP (Ocean Reanalysis Intercomparison Project) data, we investigated spatial and temporal changes of net surface heat flux in the East Asian seas and presented a new ensemble net surface heat flux index. The ensemble net surface heat flux index is produced considering the data distribution and the standard deviation of each ORA-IP. From the correlation analysis with air temperature averaged over the Korean Peninsula, ensemble net heat flux around the Korea Strait shows the highest correlation (0.731) with a 3 month time lag. For the correlation study regarding precipitation over the Korean Peninsula, it also shows significant correlation especially in winter and spring seasons. Similar results are also found in comparison with climate indices (AO, PDO, and NINO3.4), but ensemble net surface heat flux data in winter season reveals the strongest correlation patterns especially with winter temperature and spring precipitation.

The paper describes the study of global approximate optimization utilizing soft computing techniques such as genetic algorithms (GA's), neural networks (NN's), and fuzzy inference systems(FIS). GA's provide the increasing probability of locating a global optimum over the entire design space associated with multimodality and nonlinearity. NN's can be used as a tool for function approximations, a rapid reanalysis model for subsequent use in design optimization. FIS facilitates to handle the quantitative design information under the case where the training data samples are not sufficiently provided or uncertain information is included in design modeling. Properties of soft computing techniques affect the quality of global approximate model. Evolutionary fuzzy modeling (EFM) and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) are briefly introduced for structural optimization problem in this context. The paper presents the success of EFM depends on how optimally the fuzzy membership parameters are selected and how fuzzy rules are generated.

In this study we produced 1-dimensional p wave velocity structure of the crust using 449 P arrivals of 35 stations and we analysed hypocenters of the southeastern Korean peninsula area. A initial velocity model was selected from the priori studies and 30 different initial models were generated using random number generation from it. Using the veriest program 30 different velocity structures were calculated and the result show that velocities are 5.8 - 6.4 km/sec within 6 - 16 km depth and 7 $\pm$ 0.2 km/sec within 20 - 30 km with resonable resolution. Hypocenters were relocated by using resulted 1-dimensional velocity model as a initial model. Recalculated hypocenters'depth are shallower than initial data and epicenters show a little better lineality around study area but more much earthquake information are needed fur the determination of relation between epicenter distribution and geological tectonic structures.

Increased signal in T1-weighted images was observed in the experimental manganese (Mn) poisoning of the non-human primate and a patient with Mn neurointoxication. However, our study showed that the increased signals in magnetic resonance images (MRI) were highly prevalent (41.6%) in Mn-exposed workers. Blood Mn concentration correlated with pallidal index. These changes in MRI tend to disappear following the withdrawal from the source of Mn accumulation, despite permanent neurological damage. Thus increased signal intensities on a T1-weighted image reflect exposure to Mn, but not necessarily manganism. Our study also showed that the concentration of Mn required to produce increased signal intensities on MRI is much lower than the threshold necessary to result in overt clinical signs of manganism. Increased signal intensities in the globus pallidus were determined by manganese accumulation in the animal experiment. Reanalysis of the previous data with the structural equation model revealed that pallidal index (Pl) on MRI reflects target organ dose of occupational Mn exposure

The study on the precipitation particle distribution models in Korea for the environmental test and evaluation (T&E) from huge amount of measuring and reanalysis data is presented. Instead of related specifications of MIL-HDBK-310, with these models it can be possible to realize more realistic and efficient design and environmental T&E for the military and civil products especially for the atmospheric flying vehicles using in Korea.
