  • Various researches are performed to extract significant features from continuous images. The FAST algorithm has the simple structure for arithmetic operation and it is easy to extraction the features in real time. For this reason, the FPGA based hardware accelerator is implemented and widely applied for the FAST algorithm. The hardware accelerator needs the threshold to extract the features from images. The threshold is influenced not only the number of extracted features but also the total execution time. Therefore, the way of threshold control is important to stabilize the total execution time and to extract features as much as possible. In order to control the threshold, this paper proposes the PI controller. The function and performance for the proposed PI controller are verified by using test images and the PI control logic is designed based on Xilinx Vertex IV FPGA. The proposed scheme can be implemented by adding 47 Flip Flops, 146 LUTs, and 91 Slices to the FAST hardware accelerator. This proposed approach only occupies 2.1% of Flip Flop, 4.4% of LUTs, and 4.5% of Slices and can be regarded as a small portion of hardware cost.

  • Plectin and microtubule actin cross-linking factor 1 (MACF1) are architectural proteins that contribute to the function of skeletal muscle as generators of mechanical force. However, the influence of insulin- like growth factor-I (IGF-I), a master regulator of skeletal muscle cells, on plectin and MACF1 in skeletal muscle cells has not been demonstrated. The effect of IGF-I on plectin and MACF1 gene expression was investigated by treating differentiated C2C12 murine skeletal muscle cells with 20 ng/ml of IGF-I at different time points. The IGF-I treatment increased plectin protein expression in a dose-dependent manner. The mRNA level of plectin was measured by real-time quantitative PCR to determine if plectin induction was regulated pretranslationally. IGF-I treatment resulted in a very rapid induction of plectin mRNA transcript in C2C12 myotubes. Plectin mRNA increased by 140 and 180% after 24 and 48 hours of IGF-I treatment, respectively, and returned to the control level after 72 hours of IGF-I treatment. MACF1 mRNA increased 86 and 90% after 24 and 48 hours of IGF-I treat-ment, respectively, and returned to the control level after 72 hours of IGF-I treatment. These results suggested that the plectin gene is regulated pretranslationally by IGF-I in skeletal muscle cells. In conclusion, IGF-I induces a rapid transcriptional modification of the plectin and MACF1 genes in C2C12 skeletal muscle cells and has modulating effects on a cytolinker protein as well as on contractile proteins.

  • Circadian rhythm is an endogenous oscillation of about 24-h period in many physiological processes and behaviors. This daily oscillation is maintained by the molecular clock machinery with transcriptional-translational feedback loops mediated by clock genes including Period2 (Per2) and Bmal1. Recently, it was revealed that gut microbiome exerts a significant impact on the circadian physiology and behavior of its host; however, the mechanism through which it regulates the molecular clock has remained elusive. 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propionic acid (4-OH-PPA) and 3-phenylpropionic acid (PPA) are major metabolites exclusively produced by Clostridium sporogenes and may function as unique chemical messengers communicating with its host. In the present study, we examined if two C. sporogenes-derived metabolites can modulate the oscillation of mammalian molecular clock. Interestingly, 4-OH-PPA and PPA increased the amplitude of both PER2 and Bmal1 oscillation in a dose-dependent manner following their administration immediately after the nadir or the peak of their rhythm. The phase of PER2 oscillation responded differently depending on the mode of administration of the metabolites. In addition, using an organotypic slice culture ex vivo, treatment with 4-OH-PPA increased the amplitude and lengthened the period of PER2 oscillation in the suprachiasmatic nucleus and other tissues. In summary, two C. sporogenes-derived metabolites are involved in the regulation of circadian oscillation of Per2 and Bmal1 clock genes in the host's peripheral and central clock machineries.

  • This paper introduces a risk graph which is one method for determining the SIL as a measure of the effectiveness of signaling system. The purpose of this research is to make up for the weakness of the qualitative determination, which has input value ambiguity and a boundary problem in the SIL range. The fuzzy input valuable consists of consequence, exposure, avoidance and demand rate. The fuzzy inference produces forty eight fuzzy rule by adapting the calibrated risk graph in the IEC 61511. The Max-min composition is utilized for the fuzzy inference. The result of the fuzzy inference is the fuzzy value. Therefore, using the de-fuzzification method, the result should be converted to a crisp value that can be utilized for real projects. Ultimately, the safety requirement for hazard is identified by proposing a SIL result with a tolerable hazard rate. For the validation the results of the proposed method, the fuzzy risk graph model is compared with the safety analysis of the signaling system in CENELEC SC 9XA WG A10 report.

  • Hydration is the main reason for the growth of the material properties. An exact parameter to control the chemical and physical process is not the time, but the degree of hydration. Therefore, it is reasonable that development of all material properties and the formation of microstructure should be formulated in terms of degree of hydration. Mathematical formulation of degree of hydration is based on combination of reaction rate functions. The effect of moisture conditions as well as temperature on the rate of reaction is considered in the degree of hydration model. This effect is subdivided into two contributions: water shortage and water distribution. The former is associated with the effect of W/C ratio on the progress of hydration. The water needed for progress of hydration do not exist and there is not enough space for the reaction products to form. The tatter is associated with the effect of free capillary water distribution in the pore system. Physically absorption layer does not contribute to progress of hydration and only free water is available for further hydration. In this study, the effects of chemical composition of cement, W/C ratio, temperature, and moisture conditions on the degree of hydration are considered. Parameters that can be used to indicate or approximate the real degree of hydration are liberated heat of hydration, amount of chemically bound water, and chemical shrinkage, etc. Thus, the degree of heat liberation and adiabatic temperature rise could be determined by prediction of degree of hydration.

  • Generally, the properties of metamaterials are analyzed based on the infinite array of the unit cells. In real application of the metamaterial, however, the array has to be finite. Hence, it is important that a method can analyze the effect of the finite array of the metamaterial. In this paper, a model is proposed which can calculate the scattering by a large-size finite array of an I-shaped metamaterial without a full-wave simulation. The proposed model is based on the surface current estimation of each unit cells. The ratio of the current distribution on a finite array of the metamaterial to that of the infinite array of the same metamaterial for a TM polarized incident wave is approximated as a quartic polynomial. The coefficients of the polynomial are a function of the physical dimension of the metallic patch. Hence, the current distribution of the finite metamaterial can be estimated based on the proposed polynomial and the current of the infinite array. The scattered field is calculated by using the surface current model. The proposed model is numerically and experimentally verified by comparing calculated and measured RCS(Radar Cross Section) data.

  • Purpose: This study was to determine the possible effects of trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and epidermal growth factor (EGF) through cell survival genes of the PI3K-AKT signaling pathway when applying an hydrophobically modified glycol chitosan (HGC)-based nanocontrolled release system to human gingival fibroblasts in oral soft tissue regeneration. Materials and Methods: An HGC-based nano-controlled release system was produced, followed by the loading of TCA and EGF. The group was divided into control (CON), TCA-loaded nano-controlled release system (EXP1), and the TCA- and EGF- individually loaded nano-controlled release system (EXP2). A total for 29 genes related to the PI3K-AKT signaling pathway were analyzed after 48h of culture in human gingival fibroblasts. Real-time PCR, 1- way ANOVA and multiple regression analysis were performed. Results: Cell survival genes were significantly upregulated in EXP1 and EXP2. From multiple regression analysis, ITGB1 was determined to be the most influential factor for AKT1 expression. Conclusion: The application of TCA and EGF through the HGC-based nano-controlled release system can up-regulate the cell survival pathway.

  • When the imaging object rotates in image plane during MRI scan, its rotation causes phase error and non-uniform sampling to MRI signal. The model of the problem including phase error non-uniform sampling of MRI signal showed that the MRI signals corrupted by rotations about an arbitrary center and the origin in image plane are different in their phases. Therefore the following methods are presented to improve the quality of the MR image which includes the artifact. The first, assuming that the angle of 2-D rotational motion is already known and the position of 2-D rotational center is unknown, an algorithm to correct the artifact which is based on the phase correction is presented. The second, in case of 2-D rotational motion with unknown rotational center and unknown rotational angle, an algorithm is presented to correct the MRI artifact. At this case, the energy of an ideal MR image is minimum outside the boundary of the imaging object to estimate unknown motion parameters and the measured energy increases when the imaging object has an rotation. By using this property, an evaluation function is defined to estimate unknown values of rotational angle at each phase encoding step. Finally, the effectiveness of this presented techniques is shown by using a phantom image with simulated motion and a real image with 2-D translational shift and rotation.

  • The geography, circulation pattern, and ecology show that the semi-closed seas of Northwest Pacific be managed as one complete system. Ongoing multilateral cooperative efforts relevant to marine environmental protection in the Northwest Pacific area, include the Working Group for the Western Pacific (WESTPAC) established under the auspices of WNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commissions, the UNDP/GEF Programme on Prevention and Management of Marine Pollution in East Asian Seas (PEMSEA), the North Pacific Marine Science Organization(PICES), and the United Nations Environment Programme(WNEP)'s Northwest Pacific Action Plan(NOWPAP). The present report firstly describes the current situations on the existing regional cooperative regimes for marine environmental conservation in the Northwest Pacific region, with a special respect to the Northwest Pacific Action Plan(NOWPAP) which was adopted in 1994 by Japan, People's Republic of China, Republic of Korea and Russian Federation. Then, problems of the existing regimes are also discussed, together with the suggestion of the possible solutions, focusing on NOWPAP. Suggestions include: 1) the Northeast Asian countries should understand the importance of legally-binding regional convention, and should build up any legally-binding instrument which can function as a big umbrella for real regional cooperation without prejudice to the rights of the States, 2) At present stage, it will be possible to make a regional convention flexible without prejudice to the sovereign right of the States or territorial issues; 3) taking into account that the region often faces many generic political problems that often inhibit the effective collective actions on environmental issues, the leadership from UNEP or other international organizations is required; 4) strong institutional and financial framework should be made, and 5) multilateral efforts to respond to the new marine environmental threats should be taken at the regional level in order to protect the coastal and marine environments in the Northwest Pacific.
